Singular and Plural

Serbian distinguishes singular and plural, but counting creates a third shape that English speakers do not expect. After два/две, три, четири, many noun phrases use a special paucal, or “small-count,” pattern; after пет and higher numbers, they use the genitive plural. Consequently, English plural “students” corresponds to студенти, два студента, or пет студената, depending on the structure.

These are not interchangeable endings. Gender selects the basic plural pattern, numerals govern particular forms, and case still controls the role of the whole phrase.

Basic Singular and Plural Patterns

For ordinary nominative subjects, the three most productive patterns are masculine -и, feminine -е, and neuter -а.

Gender/classSingularPluralPhrase contrast
masculine consonant stemстудентстудентинов студент → нови студенти
feminine -а stemкњигакњигенова књига → нове књиге
neuter -о stemселоселамало село → мала села
neuter -е stemпољепољазелено поље → зелена поља

Један студент чека испред сале, а остали студенти су већ ушли.

One student is waiting outside the hall, and the other students have already gone in.

Нова књига је на пулту, а старе књиге су у магацину.

The new book is on the counter, and the old books are in storage.

Мало село је остало без продавнице, али суседна села их имају неколико.

The small village was left without a shop, but the neighboring villages have several.

Many short masculine nouns expand the plural stem: град — градови, број — бројеви, син — синови. Others do not: пас — пси, зуб — зуби, гост — гости. Learn this lexical choice with the noun; the dedicated -ов-/-ев- plural page develops the pattern.

💡
Learn three items together: nominative singular, nominative plural, and gender—град, градови, masculine; књига, књиге, feminine; село, села, neuter.

Agreement Makes Number Visible

Determiners and adjectives agree with the noun. In the past tense, the participle shows both gender and number: masculine plural били, feminine plural биле, neuter plural била. Present-tense су is the same for all three.

Нови мостови су били затворени, а споредне улице су биле проходне.

The new bridges were closed, while the side streets were passable.

Сва писма су била на столу кад сам се вратила.

All the letters were on the table when I returned.

Do not copy the English habit of leaving “new” or “this” unchanged. Serbian number is distributed across the phrase: ова важна порука — ове важне поруке.

One, Two to Four, Five and Above

With један, the noun is singular and the numeral agrees like an adjective: један рачун, једна карта, једно место.

With два for masculine/neuter or две for feminine, and with три, четири, Serbian uses a small-count pattern:

GenderSmall-count phraseWhat changes
masculineдва нова рачунаadjective -а; noun has genitive-singular-shaped form
feminineдве нове картеforms coincide with feminine nominative plural
neuterдва слободна местаadjective -а; noun has genitive-singular-shaped form

Три добра пријатеља су стигла раније да нам помогну.

Three good friends arrived early to help us.

Две нове колегинице су дошле на јутарњи састанак.

Two new colleagues came to the morning meeting.

Четири слободна места су остала у последњем реду.

Four seats remained free in the last row.

The past participles reinforce the pattern: masculine/neuter small counts commonly take -а (три пријатеља су стигла, два писма су стигла), while feminine small counts take feminine plural -е (две колегинице су дошле).

With пет and higher simple counts, adjectives and nouns take genitive plural. The neutral grammatical-agreement pattern uses a neuter singular predicate.

Пет нових рачуна је стигло на исту адресу.

Five new bills arrived at the same address.

Десет старих кућа је обновљено прошле године.

Ten old houses were renovated last year.

This is not ordinary semantic singular: рачуна and кућа refer to several items. It is grammatical government by the numeral. Semantic plural agreement also occurs, especially with human referents, as in пет ученика су дошли. Whichever predicate pattern is chosen, the noun after five or more remains genitive plural.

Compound numbers follow the final counting unit, except that the teens 11–14 belong to the five-and-above pattern: двадесет један студент, двадесет два студента, двадесет пет студената, but дванаест студената.

💡
Look at the last relevant number: 1 selects singular, 2–4 select the small-count pattern, and 5–20 select genitive plural. Numbers ending in 11–14 remain the genitive-plural pattern.

Number Inside the Case System

Plural nouns decline for case just as singular nouns do. The plural ending changes according to role; “plural” is not one fixed form.

Case/functionInanimate masculineAnimate masculineFeminineNeuter
nominative: subjectнови мостовидобри псинове торбенова писма
accusative: objectнове мостоведобре псенове торбенова писма
genitive: without/ofнових мостовадобрих пасанових торбинових писама
dative/instrumental/locative shapeновим мостовимадобрим псимановим торбамановим писмима

Masculine nouns have a nominative–accusative contrast in the plural regardless of animacy: compare мостови — мостове and пси — псе. Animacy does not create a genitive-shaped plural accusative: the form is добре псе, not добрих паса. In the singular, by contrast, видим доброг пса has the genitive-shaped animate accusative.

На мостовима су поставили нова светла, па сада јасно видимо мостове ноћу.

They installed new lights on the bridges, so now we can see the bridges clearly at night.

The endings also allow flexible information order. Те књиге читају студенти means “the students are reading those books”: студенти is unambiguously nominative plural, while context identifies те књиге as the object. The feminine form те књиге is itself syncretic—it could be nominative or accusative in isolation—so case marking across the whole sentence and meaning work together. Initial position adds focus; it does not automatically make “books” the subject.

High-Frequency Irregular and Fixed Plurals

Several essential nouns have an irregular or collective plural:

SingularPlural/collectiveAgreement example
човекљудити људи су дошли
детедецамала деца су дошла
братбраћамоја браћа су стигла
окоочиплаве очи
ухоушипромрзле уши

Деца су већ заспала, али су одрасли још у дворишту.

The children have already fallen asleep, but the adults are still in the garden.

Other nouns normally occur only in plural forms: врата, маказе, панталоне. Say врата су отворена, not a fabricated singular. Counting them requires special count nouns or constructions, treated on the Plural-Only Nouns page.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the ordinary plural after two.

❌ Два нови студенти чекају испред.

Incorrect — after два, masculine nouns use the small-count phrase два нова студента.

✅ Два нова студента чекају испред.

Two new students are waiting outside.

2. Using the small-count form after five.

❌ Платили смо пет нова рачуна одједном.

Incorrect — after пет, both the adjective and noun must be genitive plural: нових рачуна.

✅ Платили смо пет нових рачуна одједном.

We paid five new bills at once.

3. Using nominative plural after a five-plus numeral.

❌ Шест путници су стигли рано.

Incorrect — after шест, the noun must be genitive plural путника, not nominative plural путници.

✅ Шест путника је стигло рано.

Six passengers arrived early. (Neutral grammatical agreement; semantic plural су стигли is also possible.)

4. Extending masculine animate singular accusative into the plural.

❌ Сваког јутра виђам добрих паса у парку.

Incorrect for a definite direct object meaning ‘I see the good dogs’ — accusative plural is добре псе.

✅ Сваког јутра виђам добре псе у парку.

Every morning I see the good dogs in the park.

5. Treating first position as the subject.

❌ У „Те извештаје пишу аналитичари“, извештаји су субјекат јер су први.

Incorrect analysis — те извештаје is accusative plural; аналитичари is the nominative subject.

✅ Те извештаје пишу аналитичари из нашег тима.

Those reports are written by analysts from our team.

Key Takeaways

  • Ordinary plurals follow gender and stem class: commonly masculine -и, feminine -е, neuter -а.
  • 2–4 trigger a small-count pattern; 5+ trigger genitive plural and normally neuter singular predicate agreement.
  • Plural nouns still change for case, and endings—not rigid position—show their role.
  • Memorize high-frequency pairs such as човек — људи and дете — деца as complete number relationships.
