Genitive Plural: The Hard Case

The genitive plural is one of the least predictable parts of Serbian declension. Modifiers are reassuringly regular—ових нових градова, ових нових књига, ових нових села—but noun endings vary by declension, stem shape, and lexical history. Two similar nouns may form the genitive plural differently, so there is no honest one-line shortcut.

This page organizes the main patterns and the forms worth learning as vocabulary. The broader genitive forms are treated elsewhere; here the central question is how to build and recognize the plural form.

Из пет оближњих градова стигли су представници локалних удружења.

Representatives of local associations arrived from five nearby cities.

На столу недостаје неколико важних писама која су јуче стигла.

Several important letters that arrived yesterday are missing from the table.

In both phrases, demonstratives and adjectives use regular genitive plural forms in -их. The hard choice lies in the noun: градова, but писама.

💡
Learn a noun with three plural forms: nominative plural, genitive plural, and dative–instrumental–locative plural. For example: градови — градова — градовима.

Masculine Nouns: -ова, -ева, and -а

Many short masculine nouns use -ова: градова, станова, столова, синова. After a palatal consonant, -ева is common: кључева, краљева, мужева. These endings parallel the expanded plural in -ови/-еви, but not every masculine noun follows that route.

Longer stems commonly use genitive plural -а. When the stem ends in a difficult consonant cluster, a fleeting а may appear: студент — студената, задатак — задатака, податак — података. Other nouns keep a straightforward stem: прозор — прозора. The noun месец shows why guessing is dangerous: nominative plural and genitive plural are both spelled месеци, not an invented месеца for the plural.

После десет месеци рада коначно су објавили резултате.

After ten months of work, they finally published the results.

У архиви недостаје неколико старих података из тог периода.

Several old data records from that period are missing from the archive.

Names for male inhabitants in -анин usually drop -ин in the plural stem: грађанин — грађани — грађана. The form грађана is therefore not built by attaching an ending directly to the full singular.

Предлози грађана биће размотрени на следећој седници.

The citizens' proposals will be considered at the next meeting.

Feminine Nouns in -а: Zero Endings and Inserted а

Many feminine -а nouns have a zero genitive plural ending: жена, књига, школа, улица. The resulting form may look exactly like another cell. Жена is both nominative singular “woman” and genitive plural “of women”; ordinary spelling does not mark the vowel length that can distinguish them in careful pronunciation.

Једна жена чека испред ординације.

One woman is waiting outside the consulting room.

Пет жена чека испред ординације.

Five women are waiting outside the consulting room.

The first жена is nominative singular; the second is genitive plural governed by пет. The predicate and numeral resolve the written syncretism.

Consonant clusters often trigger an inserted а: сестра — сестара, девојка — девојака, земља — земаља, овца — оваца. The exact location follows the stem, not simply the printed nominative ending. Some frequent nouns instead have -и, such as мајка — мајки. This distribution is genuinely lexical and must be checked in a dictionary.

У дворишту се чуло блејање неколико оваца.

The bleating of several sheep could be heard in the yard.

Савети искусних мајки помогли су нам током првих недеља.

The advice of experienced mothers helped us during the first weeks.

Feminine i-Stems and Neuter Nouns

Feminine consonant-stem nouns often use -и: ноћ — ноћи, ствар — ствари, реч — речи. Some high-frequency nouns use -ију, including кост — костију; irregular body-part plurals such as око — очи — очију and ухо — уши — ушију must be learned separately.

После неколико непроспаваних ноћи одлучила је да узме слободан дан.

After several sleepless nights, she decided to take a day off.

На снимку се јасно види положај костију шаке.

The position of the hand bones is clearly visible in the image.

Many neuter nouns in -о/-е have a zero ending after their plural stem: село — села, место — места, питање — питања. Clusters may again introduce а, as in писмо — писама. Extended-stem neuters follow their own paradigms: име — имена — имена, while дете uses the collective plural деца and genitive деце.

Између два села нема редовне аутобуске линије.

There is no regular bus route between the two villages.

Села тог краја позната су по старим воденицама.

The villages of that region are known for their old watermills.

In између два села, the form села is the two-to-four count form, identical in shape to genitive singular; in села тог краја, it is nominative plural. With између удаљених села, the adjective удаљених and preposition prove that села is genitive plural.

💡
Ordinary spelling does not mark the vowel length that distinguishes some spoken forms. Use the numeral, preposition, modifier, and sentence role to analyze written жена, села, and similar syncretic forms.

Why the Genitive Plural Appears

High-frequency governors include numbers from five upward, quantifiers such as много, мало, неколико, and prepositions that apply to a plural phrase: без докумената, између зграда, код старих пријатеља. Possessive relations can also be plural: распоред предавања “the lecture schedule.”

Без важећих докумената не можете да преузмете пошиљку.

You cannot collect the parcel without valid documents.

Распоред предавања промењен је због празника.

The lecture schedule was changed because of the holiday.

The preposition or head noun selects genitive; number then selects the plural form. English “without,” “of,” and a bare noun after a number look unrelated, but Serbian treats each dependent phrase as genitive for its own grammatical reason.

Practice Task 1: Form the Genitive Plural

Build the phrase after неколико.

На полици стоји неколико старих речника.

Several old dictionaries are standing on the shelf. Answer: речник → речника; the adjective is старих.

У фиоци је остало неколико кратких оловака.

Several short pencils were left in the drawer. Answer: оловка → оловака, with inserted а.

Practice Task 2: Identify the Syncretic Form

Explain the case and number of места in each sentence.

Ова места су резервисана за госте.

These seats are reserved for guests. Answer: nominative plural, shown by ова and plural су.

Нема слободних места поред прозора.

There are no free seats by the window. Answer: genitive plural after нема, confirmed by слободних.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving every masculine noun -ова.

❌ У групи нема довољно студенатова за два тима.

Incorrect — the genitive plural of студент is студената, not студенатова.

✅ У групи нема довољно студената за два тима.

There are not enough students in the group for two teams.

2. Omitting the inserted а in a cluster.

❌ Добили смо одговоре из пет различитих земљи.

Incorrect — the genitive plural of земља is земаља.

✅ Добили смо одговоре из пет различитих земаља.

We received answers from five different countries.

3. Leaving modifiers outside the genitive plural.

❌ Без ови важни података не можемо да завршимо анализу.

Incorrect — the entire phrase must be genitive plural: ових важних података.

✅ Без ових важних података не можемо да завршимо анализу.

Without these important data, we cannot complete the analysis.

4. Treating an identical spelling as proof of one case.

❌ У изразу пет жена, жена је номинатив једнине јер тако изгледа.

Incorrect — пет governs genitive plural even though жена is spelled like the nominative singular.

✅ Пет жена је већ потписало петицију.

Five women have already signed the petition.

Key Takeaways

  • Modifiers have regular genitive plural -их, but noun endings include -ова, -ева, -а, -и, -ију, and zero.
  • Fleeting а often breaks consonant clusters: студената, девојака, писама.
  • Several genitive plurals look like singular or nominative forms; the governor and agreement identify the case.
  • The remaining variation is lexical. Record and verify the genitive plural whenever a noun does not fit a secure model.
