Serbian noun suffixes can name a person who performs an activity, an instrument used for it, an action, a result, or an abstract property. The recurring meanings are useful, but no suffix is a universal translation of English -er, -ing, -ness, or -ity. Возач, читалац, пекар, and радник all name people, yet their suffixes cannot be exchanged freely.
The practical goal is to recognize common families and learn which derivatives are established. Every derived noun must be stored with its gender, plural, case behavior, register, and any change in the stem or stress.
People: -ач, -ац/-лац, -ар, and -ник
Several suffixes form masculine nouns for occupations, habitual agents, or participants.
| Base | Derived noun | Meaning | Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| возити | возач | driver | -ач |
| пливати | пливач | swimmer | -ач |
| читати | читалац | reader | -лац |
| гледати | гледалац | viewer/spectator | -лац |
| пећи (stem пек-) | пекар | baker | -ар, established family |
| новине | новинар | journalist | -ар |
| радити | радник | worker | -ник |
| користити | корисник | user | -ник with stem reshaping |
Возач је сачекао путнике који су каснили на последњи полазак.
The driver waited for the passengers who were late for the last departure.
Редовни читаоци већ су резервисали нови број часописа.
Regular readers have already reserved the new issue of the magazine.
Читалац illustrates why citation form alone is insufficient. Nominative singular читалац and genitive plural читалаца retain л, whereas the other case forms use the stem читаоц-, with л → о: nominative plural читаоци, genitive singular читаоца, dative singular читаоцу.
Новинарка је после конференције разговарала са главним истраживачем.
The journalist spoke with the lead researcher after the conference.
Feminine person nouns use several established patterns: новинарка, професорка, лекарка, радница, корисница, преводитељка. Contemporary standard Serbian uses these forms productively, but the suffix is selected by the masculine base and lexical convention. In official or professional contexts, preferences can vary by institution and speaker; use the attested title rather than inventing one by analogy.
Instruments and devices
Suffixes such as -ач and -ник can also name instruments. The same form therefore does not mean “person” by itself; the base and lexical meaning decide.
| Family | Noun | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| отворити / отварати | отварач | opener |
| прекидати | прекидач | switch |
| пунити | пуњач | charger |
| грејати | грејач | heater/heating element |
| будити | будилник | alarm clock |
Понеси пуњач, јер у возу има утичница поред сваког седишта.
Bring a charger, because the train has a power socket beside every seat.
Прекидач за светло налази се иза ормара.
The light switch is behind the wardrobe.
Возач is a person, while отварач is normally an instrument. A new technical term may extend an established pattern, but learners should confirm it in a current dictionary or professional corpus. English -er creates similar ambiguity (driver, opener), yet the Serbian suffix chosen is still lexical.
Action and process nouns in -ње
The productive verbal-noun family surfaces as -ање, -ење, or -ње. These nouns are neuter and typically name an activity or process, especially from imperfective verbs.
| Verb | Process noun | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| читати | читање | reading |
| писати | писање | writing |
| учити | учење | learning/studying |
| истраживати | истраживање | research/investigation |
| градити | грађење | building as a process |
Учење новог програма трајало је краће него што смо очекивали.
Learning the new software took less time than we expected.
Истраживање тржишта почело је пре отварања прве продавнице.
The market research began before the first store opened.
The former direct object normally becomes genitive inside the noun phrase: истраживати тржиште → истраживање тржишта. The dedicated page on verbal nouns develops their syntax.
Do not form these nouns by removing -ти from the infinitive and adding visible -ње. Учити → учење and градити → грађење contain established stem alternations. A related perfective may yield a lexical result noun: решавати → решавање “solving process,” but решити → решење “solution.”
Решавање квара је потрајало, али је коначно решење једноставно.
Fixing the fault took a while, but the final solution is simple.
Abstract properties: -ост, -ина, and -ство
-ост productively derives many feminine abstract nouns from adjectives: млад → младост, сигуран → сигурност, одговоран → одговорност. It resembles English -ness/-ity, but it does not replace them word for word.
Безбедност посетилаца има предност над брзином уласка.
Visitor safety takes priority over the speed of entry.
Other established abstract nouns use -ина or -ство: брз → брзина, већина “majority,” пријатељ → пријатељство, члан → чланство. These patterns have semantic tendencies—measure/property with many -ина nouns, state or collectivity with many -ство nouns—but their membership is lexical.
Њихово дугогодишње пријатељство почело је на студентској размени.
Their long-standing friendship began during a student exchange.
Брзина интернета зависи од оптерећења мреже.
Internet speed depends on network load.
Serbian often chooses a non--ост noun where English suggests a transparent abstract suffix: леп → лепота, not a freely coined лепост in the neutral sense “beauty”; слободан → слобода, not слободност as the ordinary general noun. This is precisely where a dictionary outranks analogy.
Older or lexicalized action nouns
Nouns in -ба include молба “request,” жалба “complaint/appeal,” служба “service,” and борба “struggle.” Speakers recognize families such as молити — молба, but -ба is not a fully free way to name any modern action. The result often denotes a conventional act, document, institution, or lexical concept.
Жалбу можете поднети у року од осам дана.
You may file an appeal within eight days. (formal/administrative)
In this (formal/administrative) context, жалба is a specific document or legal act, not simply the ongoing process of complaining.
Gender and stress must be recorded
Suffixes provide strong gender clues:
- person and instrument nouns in -ач, -ар, -ник, -лац are normally masculine;
- -ост nouns are feminine i-stems;
- productive -ње nouns are neuter;
- nouns in -ка/-ица are normally feminine.
Agreement belongs to the actual derivative: ова важна жалба, ова велика сигурност, ово дуго истраживање, ова искусна преводитељка. Stress may shift within a family and is not shown in ordinary spelling. Check an accent dictionary or reliable audio; do not add accent signs to normal prose.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Person, instrument, process, or result?
Classify пуњач, корисник, потписивање, and потпис. Then put each in a natural phrase that makes the category clear.
Корисник је прикључио пуњач, завршио потписивање и проверио потпис.
The user connected the charger, finished signing, and checked the signature.
Task 2: Choose the established abstract noun
Complete families for сигуран, брз, леп, and пријатељ. The established nouns are сигурност, брзина, лепота, and пријатељство; explain why one suffix cannot generate all four.
Common Mistakes
❌ Свака особа која чита може се назвати читач у истом значењу као читалац.
Incorrect—читалац is the ordinary person noun ‘reader’; читач commonly denotes a reader/device or a person in specialized contexts.
✅ Читалац је вратио роман, а библиотекар је скенирао картицу читачем.
The reader returned the novel, and the librarian scanned the card with a reader device.
❌ Учитње упутства трајало је пет минута.
Incorrect—the established process noun from учити is учење, and reading instructions would normally be читање упутства.
✅ Читање упутства трајало је пет минута.
Reading the instructions took five minutes.
❌ Лепост старог моста привукла је фотографе.
Incorrect for neutral standard usage—the established abstract noun meaning ‘beauty’ is лепота.
✅ Лепота старог моста привукла је бројне фотографе.
The beauty of the old bridge attracted numerous photographers.
❌ Овај истраживање је објављен прошле године.
Incorrect—истраживање is neuter, so the demonstrative and participle must be neuter.
✅ Ово истраживање је објављено прошле године.
This research was published last year.
Key Takeaways
- Agent nouns use several established suffixes; do not translate English -er with one Serbian ending.
- -ач can name people or instruments, while context and the lexeme determine which.
- Productive -ње nouns are neuter process nouns; result nouns are often lexical.
- -ост is productive and feminine, but -ина, -ство, and unrelated stems remain common alternatives.
- Store stem alternations, gender, paradigm, stress source, and register with every derivative.
