The suffix -ост forms many Serbian nouns meaning a quality, state, property, or condition: млад → младост “young → youth,” сигуран → сигурност “safe/certain → safety/certainty.” These nouns are feminine even though they end in a consonant, and they belong to the feminine i-declension.
English -ness and -ity are useful clues, not translation formulas. Serbian sometimes uses -ост, but it also uses nouns such as лепота “beauty,” брзина “speed,” and слобода “freedom.” Learn the established derivative with its adjective family.
All productive -ост nouns belong to the broader feminine i-declension. This page applies that paradigm specifically to abstract derivation and meaning.
Building Common -ост Families
The suffix attaches to an adjective stem. Some bases remain transparent; others lose a mobile or derivational element such as -ан.
| Adjective | Abstract noun | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| млад | младост | youth |
| стар | старост | old age |
| једнак | једнакост | equality |
| могућ | могућност | possibility |
| важан | важност | importance |
| сигуран | сигурност | safety/certainty |
| одговоран | одговорност | responsibility |
| присутан | присутност | presence |
Сигурност путника нам је важнија од брзине.
Passenger safety is more important to us than speed.
Одговорност за коначну одлуку преузео је директор.
The director took responsibility for the final decision.
Постоји могућност да ће лет каснити због магле.
There is a possibility that the flight will be delayed because of fog.
Forms such as важност and сигурност are built from the adjective stem важн- / сигурн-, not by placing -ост after the full masculine citation form. Могућност likewise contains the established stem могућн-, which is not predictable from the shorter citation adjective могућ alone. The visible result is lexical and must be spelled as a single word.
Why These Consonant-Final Nouns Are Feminine
Gender is shown by agreement, not by the final consonant alone: ова велика могућност, важна одговорност, сигурност је била пресудна. Masculine agreement is wrong.
Ова могућност је била потпуно неочекивана.
This possibility was completely unexpected.
Његова искреност ме је пријатно изненадила.
His honesty pleasantly surprised me.
Animacy does not create a special accusative here. Feminine i-stems have nominative and accusative singular in the same surface form: важност. The modifier can reveal the role: nominative ова важност, accusative ову важност.
The Full Pattern of важност
| Case | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | важност | важности |
| Genitive | важности | важности |
| Dative | важности | важностима |
| Accusative | важност | важности |
| Vocative | важности | важности |
| Instrumental | важношћу | важностима |
| Locative | важности | важностима |
The repeated forms are syncretic: важности can be several singular or plural cases, while важностима covers dative, instrumental, and locative plural. Governing verbs, prepositions, agreement, and meaning identify the case.
Нисмо били свесни важности тог кратког разговора.
We were not aware of the importance of that short conversation.
О важности сна често говоримо тек кад смо исцрпљени.
We often talk about the importance of sleep only when we are exhausted.
The first важности is genitive after свестан, and the second is locative after о. One spelling does not mean the cases are interchangeable.
Instrumental Singular in -шћу
When the i-declension instrumental ending historically containing ј meets stem-final -ст, the standard result is -шћу: важношћу, младошћу, сигурношћу, одговорношћу. These spellings are obligatory, not pronunciation hints or optional embellishments.
Импресионирала нас је смиреношћу у тешкој ситуацији.
She impressed us with her composure in a difficult situation.
Послу је приступио с великом одговорношћу.
He approached the job with great responsibility.
Some feminine i-stems allow instrumental -и as well, but the -шћу form is the normal, distinctive form for productive nouns in -ост. Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark their pitch accent or vowel length.
Singular Qualities and Countable Plurals
Many -ост nouns are usually mass-like singulars: искреност, младост, сигурност. A plural becomes natural when the noun denotes separate options, duties, advantages, weaknesses, or noteworthy items: могућности, дужности, предности, слабости, занимљивости.
Нови посао нуди више могућности, али носи и веће одговорности.
The new job offers more opportunities but also carries greater responsibilities.
У извештају су јасно наведене предности и слабости предлога.
The proposal's strengths and weaknesses are clearly listed in the report.
Plural changes meaning, not just quantity. Одговорност can be the general quality or condition of being responsible; одговорности often means particular responsibilities or duties. Јавност is also lexicalized as “the public/public sphere,” not merely the abstract quality of being public.
-ост Is Productive, Not Universal
Several common English abstractions use another Serbian derivation:
| Adjective | Established noun | Do not invent |
|---|---|---|
| леп | лепота | *лепост |
| брз | брзина | *брзост |
| топао | топлота | *топлост |
| слободан | слобода | *слободност |
| одлучан | одлучност | established -ост noun |
There is no reliable way to derive the established noun from English alone. A dictionary or a stored word family is necessary where the pattern competes with -ота, -ина, -ода or a lexical noun.
Case and Information Structure
The case of the entire noun phrase remains visible even when word order changes.
Ову могућност је комисија одмах одбацила.
The committee immediately rejected this possibility.
Initial ову могућност is the accusative object; feminine nominative комисија is the subject. The noun itself looks the same in nominative and accusative, but ову exposes its case. Serbian can foreground the option without turning it into the agent.

Common Mistakes
1. Assigning masculine gender from the final consonant.
❌ Овај могућност је био важан.
Incorrect — могућност is feminine, so all agreeing words must be feminine.
✅ Ова могућност је била важна.
This possibility was important.
2. Declining an i-stem like a feminine noun in -а.
❌ Без сигурносте података нема поверења корисника.
Incorrect — the genitive of the feminine i-stem сигурност is сигурности, not an invented -а-stem form сигурносте.
✅ Без сигурности података нема поверења корисника.
Without data security, there is no user trust.
3. Building the instrumental by merely adding -ју.
❌ Посао је обавила с великом прецизностју.
Incorrect — -ст plus the instrumental formation yields -шћу: прецизношћу.
✅ Посао је обавила с великом прецизношћу.
She did the job with great precision.
4. Translating every English -ness with -ост.
❌ Лепост старог града привлачи туристе.
Incorrect lexical choice — standard Serbian uses лепота for beauty.
✅ Лепота старог града привлачи туристе.
The beauty of the old town attracts tourists.
