Serbian verbal nouns name an action, process, activity, or result as a noun: читати → читање “to read → reading,” путовати → путовање “to travel → travel/a trip.” The productive forms conventionally described as -ње nouns include surface endings -ање, -ење, -ње. They are neuter and decline like other neuter nouns in -е.
An English -ing form is not automatically a Serbian verbal noun. Пливање ми прија treats swimming as an activity, while Волим да пливам presents what the speaker likes to do. Both are natural; the choice changes the syntax and viewpoint.
The larger relationship between clauses, participants, and nominalized structures is developed on Nominalization Architecture. Here the focus is the productive -ње noun and its immediate syntax.
Forming Common Verbal Nouns
The derivation is systematic enough to recognize but not mechanical enough to build from the infinitive by deleting -ти and adding one suffix.
| Verb | Verbal noun | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| читати | читање | reading as an activity |
| писати | писање | writing as an activity/process |
| учити | учење | learning/studying |
| путовати | путовање | travel or a journey |
| градити | грађење | building/construction process |
| истраживати | истраживање | research/investigation |
| решити | решење | solution/result; lexicalized |
| питати | питање | question; lexicalized result |
The changes in учење, грађење and решење belong to the derived stems. Forms such as учитње or градитње do not exist. In productive usage, imperfective verbs readily yield process nouns: решавати → решавање, откривати → откривање, потписивати → потписивање. A related perfective verb often has a lexical result noun instead: решити → решење, открити → откриће, потписати → потпис.
Редовно читање ми је помогло да брже проширим речник.
Regular reading helped me expand my vocabulary more quickly.
Истраживање је трајало дуже него што смо очекивали.
The research lasted longer than we expected.

Gender, Number, and the Neuter Pattern
Verbal nouns in -ње are neuter: ово дуго путовање, занимљиво питање, пажљиво планирање. Their nominative and accusative singular are identical. The plural is -ња, and agreeing words take neuter plural forms.
| Case | Singular: путовање | Plural: путовања |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | ово путовање | ова путовања |
| Genitive | овог путовања | ових путовања |
| Dative | овом путовању | овим путовањима |
| Accusative | ово путовање | ова путовања |
| Instrumental | овим путовањем | овим путовањима |
| Locative | овом путовању | овим путовањима |
Ово путовање је било напорно, али су претходна путовања била још дужа.
This trip was tiring, but the previous trips were even longer.
The plural is natural when the noun denotes separate events, products, or countable topics: три путовања, два истраживања, важна питања. Pure activity readings normally favor the singular: Читање опушта. Plural читања is possible for distinct readings, interpretations, or reading events, especially (academic/literary).
What Happens to the Verb's Object?
When an accusative object is placed inside a noun phrase headed by a verbal noun, it usually becomes genitive:
| Verb phrase | Noun phrase |
|---|---|
| читати књигу | читање књиге |
| организовати догађај | организовање догађаја |
| градити мост | грађење моста |
| истраживати тржиште | истраживање тржишта |
Организовање конференције захтева време и јасну поделу посла.
Organizing a conference requires time and a clear division of work.
Грађење новог моста почеће тек следећег пролећа.
Construction of the new bridge will begin only next spring.
The genitive does not announce “object” by itself. It is the normal dependent case inside many noun phrases and may also express the actor. Испитивање студената can mean “the examination of the students” or, in a suitable context, “the students' examining/testing.” A fuller sentence, an adjective, or an explicit agent resolves the ambiguity. Од стране комисије can express a passive agent (formal/administrative), but overusing it makes prose heavy.
Испитивање кандидата од стране комисије трајало је цело јутро.
The committee's examination of the candidates lasted all morning. (formal)
Other Complements Usually Keep Their Case
Only an accusative object normally shifts to genitive under nominalization. A complement already governed by a preposition or another case generally keeps that construction:
- размишљати о проблему → размишљање о проблему (locative);
- управљати предузећем → управљање предузећем (instrumental);
- помагати колегама → помагање колегама (dative).
Размишљање о промени посла одузима му много енергије.
Thinking about changing jobs takes a lot of his energy.
Управљање великим тимом тражи стрпљење и јасну комуникацију.
Managing a large team requires patience and clear communication.
This is a case network, not a word-for-word replacement of an English preposition. The source verb's government and the new noun phrase structure both matter.
Verbal Noun or Clause?
Verbal nouns are common in neutral language when an activity is a topic: Пушење је забрањено, Пливање је добро за леђа. Long chains of nominalizations, however, are characteristic of (formal/administrative/academic) prose and can sound bureaucratic in conversation.
Пушење у овој згради није дозвољено.
Smoking is not permitted in this building.
Волим да читам у возу, али ми писање током вожње не прија.
I like reading on the train, but writing while traveling doesn't suit me.
The first part uses да читам after волим, a natural finite complement. The second treats писање as the subject. Serbian also has an infinitive, and it remains grammatical in constructions that license it; the choice between an infinitive, да + present, and a noun depends on the governing expression and intended style. A verbal noun is never simply a more “correct” substitute.
Word Order and Case Roles
Because nominative and accusative singular are identical for neuter -ње nouns, agreement and syntax identify the role.
Ово истраживање финансира град.
The city funds this research.
Here ово истраживање is accusative even though it comes first; masculine nominative град controls the singular verb as subject. Reversing the order does not change the morphology: Град финансира ово истраживање. Serbian uses case and agreement to package roles, while initial position can mark the topic.
Practice Task 1: Build the Noun Phrase
Turn the verb phrase into a noun phrase and move its accusative object into the genitive. Then compare the answer.
С планирањем путовања почели смо шест месеци раније.
We began planning the trip six months earlier. Answer from планирати путовање: планирање путовања.
Читање уговора одузело ми је цело поподне.
Reading the contract took my whole afternoon. Answer from читати уговор: читање уговора.
Practice Task 2: Choose Process or Result
Decide whether the context needs a process noun or a lexical result noun.
Решавање задатка трајало је сат времена.
Solving the problem took an hour. Answer: решавање presents the process.
Решење задатка налази се на последњој страни.
The solution to the problem is on the last page. Answer: решење names the result.
Common Mistakes
1. Building the noun mechanically from the infinitive.
❌ Учитње страног језика захтева стрпљење.
Incorrect — the standard verbal noun from учити is учење, not a mechanical *учитње.
✅ Учење страног језика захтева стрпљење.
Learning a foreign language requires patience.
2. Leaving a former direct object in the accusative.
❌ Организовање конференцију траје месецима.
Incorrect — inside this noun phrase, the object becomes genitive конференције.
✅ Организовање конференције траје месецима.
Organizing the conference takes months.
3. Giving a neuter verbal noun masculine agreement.
❌ Овај истраживање је био веома скуп.
Incorrect — истраживање is neuter: ово, било, скупо.
✅ Ово истраживање је било веома скупо.
This research was very expensive.
4. Translating every English -ing form with a verbal noun.
❌ Желим одлажење кући пре гужве.
Incorrect and unnatural for ‘I want to go home’ — after желим, a finite да-clause is natural here.
✅ Желим да одем кући пре гужве.
I want to go home before the rush.
Key Takeaways

- A verb's accusative object normally becomes genitive inside the noun phrase, while other governed complements usually remain.
- English -ing may correspond to a Serbian verbal noun, an infinitive, or да
