Clause-to-Noun Nominalization

Turning a Serbian clause into a noun phrase is not a matter of replacing a verb with a related noun and leaving everything else untouched. Finite agreement disappears, the nominative agent needs another form, a structural accusative object commonly becomes genitive, and inherent cases or prepositions may survive. The resulting phrase also loses tense, mood, and often the distinction between agent and patient.

This page maps that architectural change. Formation of nouns such as читање and одлука is covered on verbal nouns; the focus here is what happens to their participants.

From a Clause to a Noun Phrase

Begin with a finite clause in which agreement and case identify the participants:

Комисија је пажљиво анализирала податке из сва три извора.

The committee carefully analyzed the data from all three sources.

Its simplified structure is [комисија.NOM [је анализирала [податке.ACC]]]. After nominalization, the event noun becomes the head:

Комисијина анализа података из сва три извора трајала је три недеље.

The committee's analysis of the data from all three sources lasted three weeks.

Now the structure is [комисијина.POSS [анализа [података.GEN]]]. The former subject is a possessive adjective, while the former direct object is an objective genitive. Only the outer predicate трајала је carries finite agreement.

The same agent can appear in a postnominal phrase:

Анализа података од стране независне комисије објављена је у јуну.

The analysis of the data by an independent committee was published in June. (formal)

Од стране + genitive is (formal) and often bureaucratic. It can be useful when both agent and object must remain explicit, but the possessive form or a finite clause is usually lighter.

💡
A finite verb assigns nominative and structural accusative. A noun cannot simply preserve that frame: expect the agent to become possessive/genitive and the direct object to become genitive.

Agents: Possessives, Genitives, and Explicit “By” Phrases

For a named person or a definite singular human agent, a possessive adjective is often compact and clear:

Марково одбијање предлога изненадило је остатак тима.

Marko's rejection of the proposal surprised the rest of the team.

Марково is the rejecting agent; предлога is what he rejected. With an ordinary genitive alone, the role may be unclear:

Одбијање директора покренуло је дугу расправу у управном одбору.

The director's rejection / the rejection of the director started a long debate on the board.

Директора can be interpreted as agent (“the director rejected something”) or patient (“someone rejected the director”). Context may settle the reading, but the noun phrase itself has lost the finite clause's nominative-versus-accusative contrast.

To disambiguate, restore architecture explicitly:

Директорово одбијање новог плана покренуло је расправу.

The director's rejection of the new plan started a debate.

Одбијање директора од стране већине чланова покренуло је расправу.

The rejection of the director by the majority of members started a debate. (formal)

The second is structurally clear but heavy (formal). A finite active or passive clause may be better outside administrative prose.

Direct Objects Become Objective Genitives

A direct object in the accusative normally becomes genitive with an event nominalization:

Finite clauseNominal phrase
проверити уговор.ACCпровера уговора.GEN
објавити резултате.ACCобјављивање резултата.GEN
обновити мост.ACCобнова моста.GEN

The last row shows why forms must be analyzed, not copied: мост has accusative мост, while the nominal objective genitive is моста. Compare the full clauses:

Град је обновио мост пре почетка туристичке сезоне.

The city renovated the bridge before the tourist season began.

Обнова моста завршена је пре почетка туристичке сезоне.

The renovation of the bridge was completed before the tourist season began.

The transformation is мост.ACC → моста.GEN. English expresses the relation with of or a noun compound; Serbian uses overt case.

Inherent Cases and Prepositional Complements

Not every complement becomes genitive. Productive verbal nouns often preserve a verb's inherent dative or instrumental relation, and prepositional government normally remains visible.

Редовно помагање старијим комшијама постало је део њихове свакодневице.

Regularly helping their elderly neighbors became part of their daily routine.

The verb frame помагати комшијама.DAT survives as помагање комшијама.DAT.

Управљање великим предузећем захтева искуство и стрпљење.

Managing a large company requires experience and patience.

Instrumental предузећем remains from управљати предузећем.

Разговор о новом буџету настављен је после кратке паузе.

The discussion of the new budget continued after a short break.

The prepositional complement о + locative is retained from разговарати о буџету. The same principle applies to frames such as борба против корупције and зависност од увоза.

There is no universal “keep every oblique case” shortcut. More lexical event nouns can impose their own complement pattern, and Serbian studies distinguish productive event nominalizations from nouns denoting participants or conventionalized results. Learn the noun's frame when it diverges from the transparent verbal noun.

What Finite Grammar Disappears

Nominalization removes person and tense and may obscure voice. Compare two clauses:

Влада је променила закон после јавне расправе.

The government changed the law after the public consultation.

Закон се постепено променио током скупштинске расправе.

The law gradually changed during the parliamentary debate.

Both can feed the phrase промена закона:

Промена закона изазвала је различите реакције стручне јавности.

The change to the law prompted differing reactions from experts.

Without context, промена закона does not say whether an agent changed the law or the law changed, who acted, when it happened, or whether the speaker presents it as certain, required, or merely possible. Modifiers can restore time (прошлогодишња промена), but not every lost distinction fits naturally inside one noun phrase.

Clitics also cannot simply be carried over. Комисија га је одбила becomes одбијање предлога од стране комисије, not a noun phrase containing object clitic га. Participants must be expressed in nominal forms or recovered from context.

Aspect, Process, and Result

Aspectual viewpoint often survives only indirectly. An imperfective base readily yields a process reading, while a more lexical noun may denote the bounded result.

Решавање техничког проблема трајало је цело поподне.

Working on the technical problem took all afternoon.

Коначно решење техничког проблема стигло је од произвођача.

The final solution to the technical problem came from the manufacturer.

Решавање profiles an unfolding process related to imperfective решавати; решење conventionally names a solution or result related to решити. Likewise, одлучивање is decision-making as a process, while одлука is the resulting decision.

Одлучивање о жалбама траје дуже него што је управа очекивала.

Decision-making on the appeals is taking longer than management expected.

Коначна одлука о жалбама биће објављена у понедељак.

The final decision on the appeals will be published on Monday.

This is a lexical contrast, not a mechanical theorem that every imperfective and perfective verb yields a matching pair of nouns. Some formations are conventional and must be learned.

💡
Nominalization can preserve participants and an event concept while losing assertion. A noun phrase names “the decision”; only a finite clause directly says who decided, when, and with what modal status.

Unpacking English Noun Strings

English stacks nouns freely: committee data review procedure. Serbian normally reveals the relations with adjective agreement, genitives, or prepositional phrases: поступак комисијске провере података or, more clearly, поступак по коме комисија проверава податке. Do not translate every English noun as an unchanged nominative noun beside another.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Preserve the arguments

Nominalize Инжењер управља постројењем. Express the definite singular agent with a possessive adjective and preserve the instrumental complement: инжењерово управљање постројењем. Then explain which finite information disappears.

Task 2: Repair ambiguity

Give two unambiguous expansions of критика уредника: one where the editor criticizes a manuscript, and one where an author criticizes the editor.

Common Mistakes

Copying the verbal accusative

❌ Обнова стари мост почела је у априлу.

Incorrect—the direct object relation becomes genitive inside the nominal phrase.

✅ Обнова старог моста почела је у априлу.

The renovation of the old bridge began in April.

Dropping a governed preposition

❌ Разговор новом буџету настављен је после паузе.

Incorrect—разговор retains о + locative for its topic.

✅ Разговор о новом буџету настављен је после паузе.

The discussion of the new budget continued after the break.

Expressing the agent twice

❌ Маркова анализа података од стране Марка трајала је месец дана.

Incorrectly redundant—both Маркова and од стране Марка express the same agent.

✅ Маркова анализа података трајала је месец дана.

Marko's analysis of the data took a month.

Assuming a genitive has only one role

❌ Одбијање кандидата недвосмислено значи да је кандидат нешто одбио.

Incorrect claim—the genitive can identify the rejecter or the person rejected without further context.

✅ Кандидатово одбијање понуде изненадило је комисију.

The candidate's rejection of the offer surprised the committee.

Key Takeaways

  • A finite nominative agent becomes possessive, genitive, or an explicit од стране phrase.
  • A structural accusative object commonly becomes an objective genitive; inherent cases and prepositions may survive.
  • Nominalization removes finite agreement, tense, mood, and often voice distinctions, creating real ambiguity.
  • Process nouns and lexical result nouns can preserve different parts of an aspectual contrast.
