Serbian can place several genitive phrases after a head noun: извештај директора школе “the school director's report,” literally “report of the director of the school.” Such chains are common in (formal) administrative, journalistic, and academic prose, but they must be read in layers rather than as a row of interchangeable “of” phrases.
The first noun is the syntactic head. Its case comes from the larger sentence; each following genitive depends on a noun before it. Case therefore expresses a hierarchy of relations, not merely a Serbian replacement for English of.
For the simpler two-noun pattern before stacking begins, see Genitive of Possession.
Find the Head, Then Build to the Right
In извештај директора школе, the structure normally builds as follows:
- директор школе — “the director of the school”;
- извештај [директора школе] — “the report of [the school director].”
The forms reflect gender and number independently. Директор is masculine singular and becomes директора; школа is feminine singular and becomes школе. An explicitly plural chain can be извештај више директора школа “a report by several directors of schools,” where директора and школа are both genitive plural despite their different shapes. Without више or other context, bare директора is syncretic: it can be genitive singular or plural, so its number cannot be recovered from spelling alone.
На столу је остао извештај директора школе.
The school director's report was left on the desk.
Објављени су резултати истраживања квалитета ваздуха.
The results of the air-quality study were published.
In the second chain, резултати is the head; истраживања depends on it, while квалитета depends on истраживања, and ваздуха depends on квалитета. English often compresses the end into the noun modifier “air quality.” Serbian can use the explicit genitive chain in (formal) prose.
Only the Head Responds to the Larger Sentence
If the entire phrase changes role, the head changes case while its dependent genitives normally remain genitive. This produces a useful declension frame:
| Role of the whole phrase | Form | Visible change |
|---|---|---|
| nominative subject | извештај директора школе | head: извештај |
| accusative object | извештај директора школе | head A = N because it is masculine inanimate |
| genitive after без | без извештаја директора школе | head: извештаја |
| dative complement | извештају директора школе | head: извештају |
| instrumental after са | са извештајем директора школе | head: извештајем |
| locative after о | о извештају директора школе | head: извештају |
Извештај директора школе изазвао је бурну расправу.
The school director's report sparked a heated debate.
Новинари су пажљиво прочитали извештај директора школе.
The journalists carefully read the school director's report.
These first two sentences form a syncretic minimal pair: masculine inanimate извештај looks the same in nominative and accusative, but it is subject in the first and object in the second.
Без извештаја директора школе одбор не може да донесе одлуку.
Without the school director's report, the board cannot make a decision.
На седници смо дуго говорили о извештају директора школе.
At the meeting we spoke at length about the school director's report.
The prepositions change only извештај to извештаја or извештају. Changing every noun mechanically would destroy the dependency structure.
Modifiers Agree with the Noun They Belong To
Each adjective or determiner agrees with its own noun, not with the first noun in the chain. In коначна верзија новог плана развоја града, коначна modifies feminine nominative верзија, whereas новог modifies masculine genitive плана.
Коначна верзија новог плана развоја града биће доступна сутра.
The final version of the city's new development plan will be available tomorrow.
Расправа о коначној верзији новог плана развоја града трајала је три сата.
The discussion of the final version of the city's new development plan lasted three hours.
In the second sentence, о places the head phrase коначна верзија in the locative: о коначној верзији. The embedded новог плана развоја града stays genitive. This phrase-wide agreement is easier to manage when you mark brackets: о [коначној верзији [новог плана [развоја [града]]]].
Possession, Source, Content, and Measure
“Genitive chain” is a formal description, not a single meaning. The relationship may be possession (аутомобил директора фирме), institutional affiliation (директор фирме), content (анализа резултата), source (саопштење министарства), or a part–whole relation (кров зграде). Context supplies the relation.
Уредник је проверио наслов превода романа пре штампања.
The editor checked the title of the novel's translation before printing.
Комисија је објавила процену трошкова обнове моста.
The committee published an estimate of the bridge-renovation costs.
English freely builds noun stacks such as “bridge renovation cost estimate.” Serbian (formal) style often unfolds their semantic hierarchy with genitives. But not every English noun modifier should become a genitive: ordinary classifying relationships are frequently adjectives, as in школска библиотека “school library,” градски превоз “urban transport,” and пословни план “business plan.” Библиотека школе instead points to the library of a particular school.
Ambiguity and Information Design
Case endings show dependency but do not automatically reveal every attachment. Фотографија сестре мог колеге most readily means “a photograph of my colleague's sister,” yet фотографија itself can mean either an image depicting her or a photograph belonging to her. Serbian genitive, like English of, leaves that relation open.
Longer chains may permit competing groupings. Good editing makes the intended structure explicit by using a possessive adjective, a prepositional phrase, a relative clause, or a lexical compound.
Марков опис реакције директора био је неочекивано благ.
Marko's description of the director's reaction was unexpectedly mild.
Here possessive adjective Марков removes one genitive and clearly attaches Marko to опис. Compare the denser опис реакције директора Марка, which may leave readers unsure whether Марка names the director or the person who produced the description.
Уместо нејасног наслова, написали смо: „Извештај који је Марко припремио о реакцији директора.“
Instead of an unclear heading, we wrote: ‘The report that Marko prepared about the director's reaction.’
The quotation uses Serbian marks „…“. The relative clause and о + locative are longer but make the relations explicit. In (formal) prose, clarity is more important than preserving the shortest possible nominal chain.
Practice Task 1: Track the Head
Change the entire phrase нова анализа резултата анкете first into an accusative object and then into a locative complement.
Истраживачи су објавили нову анализу резултата анкете.
The researchers published a new analysis of the survey results. Answer: the feminine head is accusative нову анализу; both embedded nouns remain genitive.
У чланку се говори о новој анализи резултата анкете.
The article discusses a new analysis of the survey results. Answer: о governs locative новој анализи; the genitive chain is unchanged.
Practice Task 2: Unpack and Rewrite
Identify the layers in the chain, then rewrite it to make the agent explicit.
Критика одлуке управе факултета изазвала је протест.
Criticism of the faculty administration's decision sparked a protest. Layers: управа факултета → одлука управе факултета → критика одлуке управе факултета.
Критика одлуке коју је донела управа факултета изазвала је протест.
Criticism of the decision made by the faculty administration sparked a protest. Answer: the relative clause states explicitly who made the decision.
Common Mistakes
1. Changing every noun when only the head changes case.
❌ Разговарали смо о извештају директору школи.
Incorrect — о changes the head to locative, but the dependent nouns must remain genitive: директора школе.
✅ Разговарали смо о извештају директора школе.
We discussed the school director's report.
2. Leaving the head's modifier in the wrong case.
❌ Без коначна верзија плана не можемо да почнемо.
Incorrect — без requires genitive across the head phrase: без коначне верзије.
✅ Без коначне верзије плана не можемо да почнемо.
Without the final version of the plan, we cannot begin.
3. Copying an English noun stack word for word.
❌ Одбор разматра мост обнова трошак процену.
Incorrect — English-style bare noun stacking is not a Serbian noun-phrase pattern.
✅ Одбор разматра процену трошкова обнове моста.
The board is considering the bridge-renovation cost estimate.
4. Building a chain whose attachment is needlessly unclear.
❌ Објављен је извештај помоћника директора Марка.
Incorrect for the intended meaning — this chain does not clearly show whether Marko is the assistant or the director.
✅ Објављен је извештај Марка, помоћника директора.
The report by Marko, the director's assistant, was published.
Key Takeaways
- The first noun is the head; later genitives form nested dependents.
- The larger sentence changes the case of the head phrase, not the genitives embedded inside it.
- Every modifier agrees with the noun in its own layer.
- Genitive can express possession, source, content, affiliation, and part–whole relations; context identifies the relation.
- Long chains are grammatical, especially in (formal) prose, but possessive adjectives, prepositional phrases, and relative clauses often improve clarity.
