Quantifiers (sav, svaki, neki, nikakav)

Serbian agreeing quantifiers do not merely state an amount. They choose different ways of viewing a set: сав presents a whole totality, сваки distributes a statement member by member, неки selects an unspecified member or subset, and никакав rejects every acceptable kind or quality. Each agrees with the noun in gender, number, and case.

English words such as all, every, some, any, and no overlap in ways Serbian does not reproduce one for one. The most reliable approach is to identify the intended set relation before choosing a form.

The Semantic Map

DeterminerCore operationTypical phraseNatural English
савtake the totality as a wholeсав новац / сви студентиall the money / all students
свакиapply separately to every memberсваки студентeach/every student
некиchoose an unspecified member or subsetнеки студент / неки студентиsome/a certain student; some students
никакавexclude every kind or acceptable instanceникакав одговорno answer of any kind

Сви студенти су добили исто обавештење.

All the students received the same notice.

Сваки студент је добио посебну шифру.

Each student received a separate code.

Неки студенти су већ предали радове.

Some students have already submitted their papers.

Ниједан студент није послао никакав приговор.

Not a single student sent any kind of objection.

The first sentence treats the students as a complete set. The second visits each member distributively. The third selects an unspecified subset. The fourth combines negative concord with никакав, rejecting objections of any kind.

💡
Think in sets: сав closes the set, сваки checks its members one by one, неки leaves the chosen member or subset unspecified, and никакав says that no qualifying kind exists.

Сав: Totality

Singular сав/сва/све presents one entity, period, space, or quantity as complete. Plural сви/све/сва includes every member of a set.

Чекали смо цео сат, а он је све време био у погрешној згради.

We waited for a whole hour, while he was in the wrong building the entire time.

Сва вода из подрума мора да се испумпа до вечерас.

All the water must be pumped out of the basement by this evening.

Све поруке су стигле у истом минуту.

All the messages arrived in the same minute.

Сав and цео overlap in “whole,” but they are not interchangeable everywhere. Све време is an established totality expression; цео сат measures an entire bounded hour. The detailed distinction belongs on the сав, сваки, and цео page.

Number changes the construal:

Сав град је славио победу.

The whole city celebrated the victory.

Сви градови у округу добили су нове аутобуске линије.

All the towns in the district received new bus routes.

Singular сав град treats the city as one total entity; plural сви градови quantifies every town separately as a member of a complete set.

Сваки: Distribution Member by Member

Сваки/свака/свако normally combines with a singular noun even when many individuals are involved. Serbian presents each member separately, so the verb is singular too.

Свака соба има сопствено купатило.

Every room has its own bathroom.

Свако питање носи по два бода.

Each question is worth two points.

Сваком госту смо послали тачну адресу.

We sent the exact address to every guest.

The dative сваком госту shows that distributive meaning does not freeze the determiner in nominative. Сваки follows the case of its noun phrase.

Plural forms occur where the determined noun is grammatically plural, especially plural-only nouns, or where kinds/sets are being contrasted. They are not a license for English-style сваки студенти.

Проверио је свака врата пре него што је отишао.

He checked every door before he left.

Врата is neuter plural in form, so the determiner is свака even though English conceptualizes each door as singular.

Неки: Unspecified Member or Subset

Singular неки can mean “some,” “a certain,” or “some kind of,” depending on whether the speaker knows the identity and whether it matters. Plural неки selects an unspecified subset.

Неки човек је оставио пакет код комшинице.

Some man left a parcel with the neighbor.

Треба ми нека мирна соба у којој могу да радим.

I need some quiet room where I can work.

Неки возови викендом не стају на овој станици.

Some trains do not stop at this station on weekends.

In the first, the man's identity is unspecified. The second asks for any suitable member of a class. The third selects only part of the train set. Context determines whether the speaker could identify the referent but chooses not to.

Do not confuse determining неки + noun with the indefinite pronouns неко “someone” and нешто “something”:

Неко је оставио неку торбу испред лифта.

Someone left some bag in front of the elevator.

Неко stands independently for a person. Неку agrees with feminine accusative торбу. When неки stands without an overt noun, it normally involves recoverable ellipsis: Неки су већ отишли “Some [people] have already left.”

Никакав: No Kind, No Acceptable Instance

Никакав/никаква/никакво characterizes the absence of any kind or quality. Standard Serbian negative concord requires a negated verb with it.

Немамо никакав доказ да је рачун плаћен.

We have no evidence at all that the bill was paid.

Није дала никакво објашњење за кашњење.

She gave no explanation whatsoever for the delay.

У стану није било никакве штете после олује.

There was no damage of any kind in the apartment after the storm.

Compare ниједан “not one” with никакав “no kind of / no acceptable”:

Ниједан предлог није добио већину.

Not one proposal received a majority.

Никакав предлог није стигао до рока.

No proposal of any kind arrived by the deadline.

The distinction is not always dramatic in translation, but the perspective differs: ниједан counts zero members; никакав denies any qualifying instance or type.

💡
With никакав, keep the verb negative: немам никакав, није било никакве. Serbian negative words reinforce one another; they do not cancel out as two negatives can in formal English logic.

Agreement and Case

All four determiners belong inside the noun phrase and copy its gender, number, and case.

Разговарали смо са свим новим запосленима.

We spoke with all the new employees.

Без икаквог плана тешко ћемо завршити посао на време.

Without any plan at all, we will have difficulty finishing the work on time.

О неким важним питањима одлучиваћемо следеће недеље.

We will decide on some important questions next week.

The instrumental phrase са свим новим запосленима, genitive без икаквог плана, and locative о неким важним питањима each repeat the same features across the agreement chain. Икакав appears in non-assertive environments such as questions, conditions, and без phrases; it belongs to the same -какав family as никакав.

The full paradigms, including the irregular forms of сав, are consolidated on the declension of determiners page.

Agreeing Determiners Versus Genitive-Governing Quantity Words

Сав, сваки, неки, никакав agree with their noun. Words such as много, мало, неколико do not copy gender, number, and case in the same way; they govern a genitive quantity phrase.

Agreeing determinerQuantity word + genitive
неки добри студентинеколико добрих студената
са неким добрим студентимаса неколико добрих студената
сва важна питањамного важних питања

На семинар је дошло неколико младих истраживача.

Several young researchers came to the seminar.

The genitive plural младих истраживача is selected by неколико. Trying to decline неколико like неки mixes two grammatical classes.

Common Mistakes

Using plural after distributive сваки

❌ Сваки студенти морају да донесу индекс.

Incorrect — distributive сваки normally takes a singular noun and singular verb.

✅ Сваки студент мора да донесе индекс.

Every student must bring their student record book.

Leaving the determiner invariant

❌ Разговарала је са неки новим клијентима.

Incorrect — instrumental plural requires неким.

✅ Разговарала је са неким новим клијентима.

She spoke with some new clients.

Omitting negative concord with никакав

❌ Имамо никакав разлог да журимо.

Incorrect — никакав requires a negated predicate in this meaning.

✅ Немамо никакав разлог да журимо.

We have no reason at all to hurry.

Treating много as an agreeing adjective

❌ Упознали смо много занимљиви људи.

Incorrect — много governs genitive plural: занимљивих људи.

✅ Упознали смо много занимљивих људи.

We met many interesting people.

Translating English all with one Serbian form everywhere

❌ Сви дан сам чекао одговор.

Incorrect — сви is plural, while neutral Serbian expresses one complete day with цео дан.

✅ Цео дан сам чекао одговор.

I waited for an answer all day.

Key Takeaways

  • Сав expresses totality; singular and plural create whole-entity versus all-member readings.

  • Неки selects an unspecified member or subset; неко/нешто are standalone indefinite pronouns.
  • Никакав denies any kind or acceptable instance and participates in negative concord.
  • These determiners agree, while много, мало, неколико govern genitive quantity phrases.
