jedan as an Indefinite Marker

The core meaning of један is the number “one,” but it can also introduce an unspecified yet salient person or thing: Један човек вас тражи “A certain man is looking for you.” In that use, један approaches English a/an, but it never becomes an obligatory article. Most ordinary indefinite Serbian noun phrases remain bare.

The useful distinction is not “article versus number” as two rigid dictionary entries. It is a scale from exact quantity “one,” through “one particular but unidentified,” to a narrative introductory marker. Context and stress decide how strongly the numerical meaning is felt.

The Numerical Core: Exactly One

When један contrasts with another number or answers колико? “how many?”, it is an ordinary cardinal numeral.

Треба ми само једна карта, не две.

I need only one ticket, not two.

У стану има једно купатило и две спаваће собе.

The apartment has one bathroom and two bedrooms.

Од свих кандидата само је један испунио оба услова.

Of all the candidates, only one met both requirements.

The contrast једна — две or једно — две makes exact counting explicit. When the noun is omitted in the third example, masculine један refers back to masculine кандидат.

“A Certain”: Unidentified to the Listener

Један often introduces a referent whose identity the speaker does not give, even though the speaker may know it. English commonly uses a certain or simply a.

Једна госпођа је оставила поруку за вас на рецепцији.

A certain lady left a message for you at reception.

Разговарао сам с једним професором који се бави том темом.

I spoke with a professor who works on that topic.

У једном селу близу Краљева још ради стара воденица.

In a village near Kraljevo, an old watermill is still operating.

The forms једна, једним, једном agree with the determined noun and take the case required by the sentence. This agreement is a major difference from English invariant a/an.

💡
Indefinite-marker један still behaves morphologically like an agreeing numeral/determiner. Its meaning may weaken toward “a certain,” but its gender and case endings never become optional.

Narrative Introduction

Stories frequently begin with formulas such as једног дана “one day” and introduce a participant with један. The form signals “bring this new participant into the story; their exact identity is not yet relevant.”

Једног јутра на врата је покуцао непознат младић.

One morning, an unfamiliar young man knocked at the door.

Живео је једном један кројач који је умео да шије без игле.

Once there lived a tailor who could sew without a needle.

The second example has a (literary / folktale) narrative frame. This is not evidence that modern Serbian has developed a normal indefinite article; it is a conventional discourse device for introducing a story participant.

After introduction, a demonstrative or a bare noun can track the referent:

На станици ми је пришао један путник. Тај путник је тражио аутобус за Панчево.

A passenger approached me at the station. That passenger was looking for the bus to Pančevo.

Један путник opens a new discourse file; тај путник points back to the now active referent. Bare путник would also be possible in the second sentence if no contrast or explicit pointing were needed.

When Serbian Omits Један

In an ordinary first mention, Serbian usually needs no marker corresponding to English a/an:

Купила сам свеску и оловку у књижари.

I bought a notebook and a pencil at the stationery shop.

Испред зграде стоји такси.

A taxi is waiting in front of the building.

Adding једну свеску и једну оловку would foreground the quantities—one of each. Један такси could suggest one taxi among alternatives or “some particular taxi.” If quantity and special salience do not matter, the bare noun is more neutral.

This is the central limit on the article-like analysis. English grammar forces a in singular count phrases; Serbian grammar does not force један. The no-articles overview explains how context supplies definiteness and indefiniteness.

Full Singular Declension

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter
nominativeједанједнаједно
genitiveједног(а)једнеједног(а)
dativeједном(е)једнојједном(е)
accusativeједан or једног(а)једнуједно
instrumentalједнимједномједним
locativeједном(е)једнојједном(е)

Masculine accusative follows animacy: један проблем but једног човека.

Без једног потписа захтев не може да се обради.

Without one signature, the request cannot be processed.

Пришла је једном младићу који је чекао испред амбуланте.

She approached a young man who was waiting outside the clinic.

Тражим једног мајстора који уме да поправи старе пећи.

I am looking for a repairman who knows how to fix old stoves.

The last sentence can mean either “one repairman” or “a certain/type of repairman,” depending on context. Serbian does not always resolve the numerical and indefinite readings formally.

Plural Forms Are Not a Plural Article

The forms једни, једне, једна exist, but they do not supply a general plural equivalent of English some. They may contrast one group with another, refer to paired or plural-only objects, or appear in correlations such as једни... други... “some... others...”

Једни гости су отишли раније, а други су остали до поноћи.

Some guests left earlier, while others stayed until midnight.

Понела је само једне ципеле за цео викенд.

She brought only one pair of shoes for the whole weekend.

Ципеле is plural in form, so “one pair/set” uses feminine plural једне. For ordinary nonspecific “some guests,” неки гости is usually clearer than treating једни as a plural article.

Information Structure and Position

Position changes what the sentence presents as news, though it does not create a fixed article rule.

У канцеларију је ушао један незадовољан клијент.

A dissatisfied client came into the office.

Један незадовољан клијент је тражио да разговара с директором.

One dissatisfied client asked to speak to the director.

Postverbal један незадовољан клијент fits a presentational scene. Sentence-initial један more readily receives contrastive “one client” or topical “a certain client,” depending on intonation and context. This is a tendency, not a ban.

Један Versus the Three Demonstratives

Once a referent is identifiable, demonstratives can locate it relative to speaker and listener. They do more than mark definiteness.

Тражим једну шољу за чај; ова је премала, та поред тебе је окрњена, а она на полици је добра.

I am looking for a cup for tea; this one is too small, that one beside you is chipped, and the one on the shelf is suitable.

The opening једну шољу states the desired quantity and type, while ова, та, она evaluate three already visible candidates. English a/the/this/that does not map word for word onto this system.

💡
Један answers “one or a certain one”; овај/тај/онај answer “which identifiable one, relative to our attention?” Bare nouns do the ordinary work of English indefinite phrases much of the time.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Keep or omit један

Choose the neutral Serbian version: (1) “I need a pen” with no quantity contrast; (2) “I need one pen, not two”; (3) “A certain colleague called you.”

Answers: Треба ми оловка; Треба ми једна оловка, не две; Звао те је један колега.

Task 2: Decline the marker

Transform једна занимљива књига after (1) без, (2) о, and (3) са.

Answers: без једне занимљиве књиге; о једној занимљивој књизи; са једном занимљивом књигом.

Common Mistakes

Inserting један for every English a/an

❌ Тражим једну информацију о поласцима возова.

Incorrect as a neutral request — једну unnecessarily counts or singles out the information.

✅ Тражим информацију о поласцима возова.

I am looking for information about train departures.

Forgetting gender agreement

❌ Један жена вас чека у холу.

Incorrect — жена is feminine, so the form must be једна.

✅ Једна жена вас чека у холу.

A woman is waiting for you in the lobby.

Ignoring masculine animacy

❌ Упознала сам један младог архитекта на конференцији.

Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires једног младог архитекту.

✅ Упознала сам једног младог архитекту на конференцији.

I met a young architect at the conference.

Using nominative after a preposition

❌ Причали смо о један необичан предлог.

Incorrect — о requires locative: о једном необичном предлогу.

✅ Причали смо о једном необичном предлогу.

We talked about an unusual proposal.

Treating једни as a general plural article

❌ Једни туристи су питали за пут до тврђаве.

Incorrect for neutral ‘some tourists’ — једни suggests one group contrasted with another.

✅ Неки туристи су питали за пут до тврђаве.

Some tourists asked for directions to the fortress.

Key Takeaways

  • Један ranges from exact “one” to “a certain” and narrative introductory uses.
  • Article-like meaning never makes it obligatory; bare noun phrases remain the neutral default.
  • Један agrees in gender, number, and case, including masculine accusative animacy.
  • Plural једни/једне/једна has group, contrastive, or plural-only uses, not a general plural-article function.
  • Word order and discourse status influence interpretation without creating an article paradigm.
