Agreeing Serbian determiners decline with the noun they introduce. Сваки нови запослени becomes са сваким новим запосленим in the instrumental; нека добра идеја becomes о некој доброј идеји in the locative. Their endings largely follow the pronominal or long-adjective pattern, but сав is irregular and the -какав family loses a fleeting а outside its basic masculine nominative form.
This page is a morphology reference. For the meanings of totality, distribution, indefinite selection, and negative characterization, see the quantifier system.
The Agreement Principle
A determiner agrees with the determined noun, not with the speaker, possessor, or some real-world referent mentioned nearby.
Свакој мојој сестри послала сам засебну поруку.
I sent a separate message to each of my sisters.
О неким професоркиним студентима писале су локалне новине.
The local newspaper wrote about some of the female professor's students.
Feminine dative свакој matches сестри; plural locative неким matches студентима. Possessives мојој and професоркиним join the same agreement chain.
The Regular Pronominal Pattern: Сваки and Неки
The tables show the complete singular paradigms. Parenthesized final vowels are standard expanded variants.
| Case | сваки: m / f / n | неки: m / f / n |
|---|---|---|
| N | сваки / свака / свако | неки / нека / неко |
| G | сваког(а) / сваке / сваког(а) | неког(а) / неке / неког(а) |
| D | сваком(е) / свакој / сваком(е) | неком(е) / некој / неком(е) |
| A | сваки or сваког(а) / сваку / свако | неки or неког(а) / неку / неко |
| I | сваким / сваком / сваким | неким / неком / неким |
| L | сваком(е) / свакој / сваком(е) | неком(е) / некој / неком(е) |
Проверавамо исправност сваког потребног документа.
We check the validity of every required document.
Неком новом колеги мораћемо да објаснимо цео поступак.
We will have to explain the whole procedure to some new colleague.
О свакој спорној тачки гласало се одвојено.
Each disputed point was voted on separately.
Masculine accusative follows animacy:
Проверили смо сваки рачун и позвали сваког клијента.
We checked every bill and called every client.
Inanimate рачун keeps nominative-like сваки; animate клијента takes genitive-like сваког.
Plural forms
| Case | сваки: m / f / n | неки: m / f / n |
|---|---|---|
| N | сваки / сваке / свака | неки / неке / нека |
| G | сваких / сваких / сваких | неких / неких / неких |
| D | сваким / сваким / сваким | неким / неким / неким |
| A | сваке / сваке / свака | неке / неке / нека |
| I | сваким / сваким / сваким | неким / неким / неким |
| L | сваким / сваким / сваким | неким / неким / неким |
These are attributive forms used before an expressed noun: неким људима, сваким вратима. When a plural noun is omitted and the form is nominalized, extended -има appears: Некима смо већ одговорили “We have already replied to some [people].” Ordinary distributive “to everyone” is normally singular свакоме, in keeping with the member-by-member meaning of сваки.
Plural неки is fully productive: неки људи, неке идеје, нека питања. Quantificational сваки normally distributes over a singular noun, so its plural forms are restricted chiefly to plural-only nouns and special contrastive uses: свака врата “every door,” сваке маказе “every pair of scissors.” A table records morphological possibilities; it does not make every combination equally frequent.
The -Какав Family and Fleeting А
Никакав, овакав, такав, онакав, какав, некакав, икакав share a crucial stem alternation. Masculine nominative singular ends in -кав, but before other endings the fleeting а between к and в disappears: никакав → никаквог, овакав → оваквом. Feminine and neuter basic forms already show никаква, никакво.
| Case | никакав: m / f / n | овакав: m / f / n |
|---|---|---|
| N | никакав / никаква / никакво | овакав / оваква / овакво |
| G | никаквог(а) / никакве / никаквог(а) | оваквог(а) / овакве / оваквог(а) |
| D | никаквом(е) / никаквој / никаквом(е) | оваквом(е) / оваквој / оваквом(е) |
| A | никакав or никаквог(а) / никакву / никакво | овакав or оваквог(а) / овакву / овакво |
| I | никаквим / никаквом / никаквим | оваквим / оваквом / оваквим |
| L | никаквом(е) / никаквој / никаквом(е) | оваквом(е) / оваквој / оваквом(е) |
Без икаквог упутства нисмо могли да покренемо уређај.
Without any instructions at all, we could not start the device.
Нисам очекивала овакав одговор од искусног менаџера.
I did not expect this kind of answer from an experienced manager.
О никаквој забрани није било речи на састанку.
No ban of any kind was discussed at the meeting.
Plural -какав forms
| Case | никакав: m / f / n | овакав: m / f / n |
|---|---|---|
We cannot accept the offer under conditions like these.
Нисмо наишли ни на какве озбиљне препреке.
We did not encounter any serious obstacles.
The separated sequence ни на какве results from a preposition inserted inside the negative-pronoun construction. The determiner itself remains feminine accusative plural with препреке.
Irregular Сав
Сав has a fleeting а and a highly contracted oblique stem. Its forms must be learned as a set.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | сав | сва | све |
| G | свег(а) | све | свег(а) |
| D | свем(у) | свој | свем(у) |
| A | сав or свег(а) | сву | све |
| I | свим | свом | свим |
| L | свем(у) | свој | свем(у) |
| Plural case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | сви | све | сва |
| G | свих | свих | свих |
| D | свим | свим | свим |
| A | све | све | сва |
| I | свим | свим | свим |
| L | свим | свим | свим |
Before an expressed plural noun, use attributive свим: свим учесницима. Standalone “to/with/about everyone” is свима: Свима смо послали поруку.
После свег тог посла заслужујеш слободан дан.
After all that work, you deserve a day off.
Сву потребну опрему донели смо из магацина.
We brought all the necessary equipment from the warehouse.
Свим учесницима послаћемо потврду до краја недеље.
We will send a confirmation to all participants by the end of the week.
Feminine свој/свом is formally identical to forms of the reflexive possessive свој, but context and the following noun distinguish them. In у свој кући “in the whole house,” свој is a form of сав; in у својој кући “in one's own house,” својој is possessive. The first phrase is uncommon in everyday speech, where у целој кући is normally preferred; knowing it prevents misanalysis in formal or literary texts.
Transforming Complete Noun Phrases
The following transformations show agreement across determiner, adjective, and noun:
| Context | Complete phrase |
|---|---|
| N: some new proposal | неки нови предлог |
| G: without some new proposal | без неког новог предлога |
| D: toward some new proposal | ка неком новом предлогу |
| A: we considered some new proposal | размотрили смо неки нови предлог |
| I: with some new proposal | с неким новим предлогом |
| L: about some new proposal | о неком новом предлогу |
Пришли смо сваком новом кандидату и објаснили следећи корак.
We approached every new candidate and explained the next step.
Разговарали смо о оваквој неочекиваној промени распореда.
We discussed this kind of unexpected schedule change.
Agreeing Determiners Versus Quantity Governors
An agreeing determiner changes with the outer case: са неким добрим студентима. A quantity word such as неколико, много, мало governs a genitive complement, which remains genitive even when the whole quantity phrase follows many prepositions:
Разговарали смо са неким искусним преводиоцима.
We spoke with some experienced translators.
Разговарали смо са неколико искусних преводилаца.
We spoke with several experienced translators.
In the first sentence, неким искусним преводиоцима is instrumental plural. In the second, неколико governs genitive plural искусних преводилаца. Do not force adjective-like endings onto неколико.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Decline the entire chain
Transform нека нова колегиница in the phrases (1) “without some new colleague,” (2) “I approached some new colleague,” (3) “with some new colleague,” and (4) “about some new colleague.”
Answers: без неке нове колегинице; пришао сам некој новој колегиници; са неком новом колегиницом; о некој новој колегиници.
Task 2: Repair the fleeting а
Correct: без никакавог разлога; о овакавом проблему; са савим потребним документима.
Answers: без никаквог разлога; о оваквом проблему; са свим потребним документима.

Without any evidence, we cannot accuse the man.
Declining сав as a regular adjective

With all those obligations, I find it hard to make free time.
Missing masculine animacy
❌ Позвала је неки искусног адвоката.
Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires неког искусног адвоката.
✅ Позвала је неког искусног адвоката.
She called some experienced lawyer.
Making a quantity word agree
❌ Сарађујемо са неколико новим фирмама.
Incorrect — неколико governs genitive plural нових фирми, not instrumental agreement.
✅ Сарађујемо са неколико нових фирми.
We cooperate with several new companies.
Key Takeaways
- Сваки and неки follow the pronominal adjective pattern.
- Никакав, овакав, and related -какав forms lose a fleeting а before oblique endings.
- Сав is irregular: learn сав — свег — свем — свим and the feminine forms separately.
- Masculine singular accusative distinguishes animate from inanimate nouns.
- Agreeing determiners follow the noun phrase's case; много, мало, неколико instead govern genitive complements.
