The direct object is the participant directly affected, perceived, created, sought, or otherwise selected by a transitive verb. In Serbian, that object normally takes the accusative: читам књигу “I am reading a book,” чекам аутобус “I am waiting for the bus,” познајем Милана “I know Milan.”
English often signals the object mainly by placing it after the verb. Serbian marks it across the noun phrase, so the object may move for topic or contrast without becoming the subject.
Which Verbs Take a Direct Object?
High-frequency transitive verbs include видети, гледати, слушати, читати, писати, купити, тражити, чекати, позвати, волети and познавати. Their object answers “whom?” or “what?” within Serbian grammar.
Свако јутро слушам кратак подкаст док доручкујем.
Every morning I listen to a short podcast while I eat breakfast.
Чекамо последњи аутобус испред поште.
We're waiting for the last bus in front of the post office.
Позови Милену и провери нову адресу.
Call Milena and check the new address.
English listen to, wait for, and look for contain prepositions. Neutral Serbian uses a plain accusative object: слушати музику, чекати пријатеља, тражити кључеве. Translating the English preposition word for word produces the wrong construction.
Direct-Object Forms by Gender and Number
The entire phrase changes together. The table contrasts nominative subjects with accusative objects.
| Class | Nominative phrase | Accusative direct object |
|---|---|---|
| masculine animate singular | овај млади лекар | овог младог лекара |
| masculine inanimate singular | овај стари мост | овај стари мост |
| feminine -а singular | ова нова порука | ову нову поруку |
| feminine i-stem singular | ова добра вест | ову добру вест |
| neuter singular | ово важно питање | ово важно питање |
| masculine plural | ови млади лекари | ове младе лекаре |
| feminine plural | ове нове поруке | ове нове поруке |
| neuter plural | ова важна питања | ова важна питања |
For masculine singular, animacy determines whether accusative follows genitive or nominative. The rule does not extend into the plural: познајем лекаре, not genitive plural лекара for an ordinary definite object. See Accusative Forms for the full ending map.
Новинарка је интервјуисала познатог глумца и младе редитеље.
The journalist interviewed a famous actor and young directors.
Проверили смо стару адресу и сва важна документа.
We checked the old address and all the important documents.
Case, Not Position, Identifies the Object
Compare two sentences with the same participants:
Никола позива Луку на прославу.
Nikola is inviting Luka to the celebration.
Николу позива Лука на прославу.
Luka is inviting Nikola to the celebration.
Никола/Лука are nominative subjects; Луку/Николу are accusative objects. In the second sentence the object comes first, usually because Nikola is already the topic or is being contrasted.
Ову поруку је Ана послала свим колегама.
Ana sent this message to all her colleagues.
The fronted phrase ову поруку remains the direct object. Ана is nominative subject, while свим колегама is dative recipient. Serbian cases package three roles that English largely expresses through order and “to.”
One Sentence Can Contain Several Accusatives
Not every accusative phrase is a direct object. A preposition may govern another accusative in the same sentence.
Купила је поклон за млађу сестру.
She bought a gift for her younger sister.
поклон is the direct object of купила је; за млађу сестру is a prepositional phrase whose за governs accusative. In Ставила је поклон на полицу, поклон is again the object, while на полицу is an accusative destination.
Ставили су нову клупу уз источни зид.
They placed a new bench along the eastern wall.
Here нову клупу is the object, and уз источни зид is a separate accusative prepositional phrase. Case identifies a construction together with its governor; it is not simply a replacement for an English preposition.
Serbian Verb Government May Choose Another Case
Semantic “objects” in English are not always Serbian accusatives. Some Serbian verbs govern a different case or preposition:
| Serbian construction | Case | English |
|---|---|---|
| помоћи пријатељу | dative | help a friend |
| веровати колегиници | dative | believe a colleague |
| бојати се грешке | genitive | fear a mistake |
| сећати се разговора | genitive | remember the conversation |
| управљати тимом | instrumental | manage a team |
| разговарати о плану | о + locative | discuss/talk about the plan |
Помогла је новом колеги и пажљиво саслушала његово објашњење.
She helped the new colleague and listened carefully to his explanation.
новом колеги is dative after помоћи; његово објашњење is accusative after саслушати. Similar English meanings do not override Serbian lexical government.
Objects Under Negation
In neutral contemporary Serbian, an accusative object normally remains accusative under negation.
Читам ту књигу, али не читам последње поглавље.
I'm reading that book, but I'm not reading the final chapter.
A genitive of negation exists, especially in fixed, literary, or semantically restricted contexts, but it is not a rule that every negative verb converts its object. Learners can safely build neutral sentences with accusative and study the marked distribution on Genitive of Negation.
Pronoun Objects and Omitted Objects
An accusative pronoun may be full for contrast or short as a clitic: мене/ме, тебе/те, њега/га, њу/је, њих/их.
Тебе разумем, али њега уопште не разумем.
I understand you, but I don't understand him at all.
Јелена их је позвала чим је стигла кући.
Jelena called them as soon as she got home.
The clitic их follows the first prosodic unit and precedes auxiliary је in its natural cluster. Serbian can also omit an object understood from context: Јеси ли прочитао? may mean “Have you read it?” This does not create an invisible accusative ending; the verb's meaning and discourse supply the omitted participant.
Clauses Are Not Accusative Noun Phrases
After verbs such as желети, знати, чути or мислити, the complement may be a да-clause rather than a declined noun.
Желим да проверим адресу пре него што кренемо.
I want to check the address before we leave.
адресу is the accusative object of проверим. The whole clause да проверим адресу is the complement of желим, but it does not receive an accusative noun ending. Serbian also uses the infinitive in licensed environments; neither construction is universally wrong.
Practice Task 1: Find Each Governor
Identify every accusative phrase and decide whether a verb or preposition governs it.
Понели смо храну за цео дан и кренули кроз шуму.
We brought food for the whole day and set off through the forest. Answer: храну is the direct object; за цео дан and кроз шуму are prepositional accusatives.
Поставила је лампу на мали сто поред прозора.
She put the lamp on the small table by the window. Answer: лампу is the direct object; на мали сто is the accusative destination.
Practice Task 2: Choose Serbian Government
Choose the case required by the Serbian verb, not by the English translation.
Верујем својој лекарки, али тражим друго мишљење.
I trust my doctor, but I'm seeking a second opinion. Answer: веровати + dative лекарки; тражити + accusative мишљење.
Сећам се тог разговора и често помињем њен савет.
I remember that conversation and often mention her advice. Answer: сећати се + genitive разговора; помињати + accusative савет.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying an English preposition after a transitive Serbian verb.
❌ Чекамо за такси испред хотела.
Incorrect — чекати takes a plain accusative object, without за.
✅ Чекамо такси испред хотела.
We're waiting for a taxi in front of the hotel.
2. Leaving a feminine object in the nominative.
❌ Купио је нова карта преко интернета.
Incorrect — the feminine direct object requires нову карту.
✅ Купио је нову карту преко интернета.
He bought a new ticket online.
3. Ignoring masculine animacy.
❌ Познајем ваш нови директор.
Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires вашег новог директора.
✅ Познајем вашег новог директора.
I know your new director.
4. Forcing accusative after a verb with different government.
❌ Помогли смо нашег комшију да унесе ормар.
Incorrect — помоћи governs dative: нашем комшији.
✅ Помогли смо нашем комшији да унесе ормар.
We helped our neighbor carry in the wardrobe.
5. Treating the first phrase as the subject.
❌ У реченици „Ову песму пева Марко“ песма је субјекат јер стоји прва.
Incorrect analysis — ову песму is accusative object; nominative Марко is the subject.
✅ Ову песму пева Марко, а следећу пева Јована.
Marko sings this song, and Jovana sings the next one.
Key Takeaways
- Most Serbian transitive verbs govern an accusative direct object, but verb government must be learned lexically.
- English prepositions in wait for, listen to, look for do not appear with Serbian чекати, слушати, тражити.
- Case endings and agreement preserve subject–object roles when the object moves to the front.
- An accusative after a preposition is not automatically a direct object; identify the word that governs each phrase.
