Direct and Indirect Object Order

With verbs such as дати, послати, показати, Serbian often has a dative recipient and an accusative theme: Послала сам Марку фотографију “I sent Marko a photograph.” Case endings identify the roles, so full noun phrases can move for information structure. Clitic objects are much less free: within the cluster, dative normally precedes accusative, му га / му је, not га му / је му.

The neutral full-NP tendency

When both objects are short and equally new, recipient–theme order is a useful baseline:

Секретарица је директору предала кључеве.

The secretary handed the keys to the director.

Показаћу гостима нову салу после ручка.

I'll show the guests the new hall after lunch.

This dative–accusative tendency is not a rigid template. Serbian commonly puts given material before new and heavy material later. Context may therefore reverse the two full phrases.

Коме сте послали извештај? — Извештај смо послали правној служби.

Who did you send the report to? — We sent the report to the legal department.

Here извештај is already active in the question; the new recipient правној служби naturally comes later.

💡
For full objects, ask which referent is already active and which is the answer focus. Case marks the roles; discourse strongly influences their order.

Case keeps the roles visible

Ана је Милици представила Јелену.

Ana introduced Jelena to Milica.

Ана је Јелену представила Милици.

Ana introduced Jelena to Milica. (Jelena is topical or contrastive)

Feminine dative Милици remains recipient; feminine accusative Јелену remains the person introduced. Reordering changes packaging, not grammatical roles.

If morphology is syncretic, context and animacy matter more. With masculine inanimate accusative identical to nominative, agreement and plausible verb roles help. Avoid needlessly opaque orders when two full phrases could be misread.

Водич је туристима показао мост.

The guide showed the tourists the bridge.

The nominative subject controls masculine singular показао; dative туристима and inanimate accusative мост identify the objects.

Clitic order is grammaticalized

Weak pronouns form an early cluster. Dative precedes accusative/genitive.

Секретарица му их је предала пре састанка.

The secretary handed them to him before the meeting.

Можеш ли ми је показати на телефону?

Can you show it to me on your phone? (feminine object)

Када ћеш јој га вратити?

When will you return it to her?

The cluster is му их је, ли ми је, ћеш јој га. Flexible full-NP order does not license их му or га јој in the neutral clitic cluster.

When auxiliary је co-occurs with feminine accusative, the object is ју:

Никола ми ју је препоручио прошле недеље.

Nikola recommended it/her to me last week.

The sequence is dative ми + accusative ју + final auxiliary је.

Full and clitic objects can coexist

Usually one participant is familiar and clitic, while the new participant is expressed lexically.

Послала сам му нову лозинку јутрос.

I sent him the new password this morning. (female speaker)

Књигу сам јој вратио, али белешке још нисам.

I returned the book to her, but not the notes yet. (male speaker)

In the first, established recipient му is clitic and new theme нову лозинку follows. In the second, fronted књигу is contrastive and јој occupies the cluster after it.

A neutral full object is not normally doubled by a clitic:

❌ Послала сам му га извештај јутрос.

Incorrect in the intended neutral reading—га and full извештај compete for the same direct-object role.

✅ Послала сам му извештај јутрос.

I sent him the report this morning. (female speaker)

Right-dislocated clarification can involve a resumptive clitic, but it is prosodically detached: Послала сам му га, извештај. That is a marked spoken construction, not ordinary doubling.

The prosody and punctuation of that separate construction are explained under right dislocation and afterthoughts.

Heaviness favors the end

Long phrases are easier to process after shorter material. This “end weight” can override the simple dative–accusative tendency.

Послали смо потврду свим учесницима који су се пријавили до петка.

We sent a confirmation to all participants who had registered by Friday.

The long dative recipient follows short theme потврду. Conversely, a long theme naturally follows a short recipient:

Послали смо им детаљно упутство за приступ новом систему.

We sent them detailed instructions for accessing the new system.

Heaviness and newness often point in the same direction, but neither erases case marking.

One proposition, several orders

Ивана је Петру послала уговор јуче.

Ivana sent Petar the contract yesterday. (neutral recipient before theme)

Уговор је Ивана послала Петру јуче.

The contract, Ivana sent to Petar yesterday. (theme topic)

Петру је Ивана послала уговор, не Марку.

It was to Petar that Ivana sent the contract, not to Marko. (recipient focus)

Јуче му га је Ивана послала.

Ivana sent it to him yesterday. (time frame plus two given clitics)

The proposition remains stable, but topic and focus do not. The clitic version also requires fixed му га је after initial јуче.

A practical choice sequence

  1. Assign semantic roles and cases: recipient dative, theme accusative.
  2. Decide whether each referent is given/unstressed or contrastive/new.
  3. Use clitics for given unstressed pronouns; full forms for contrast or prepositions.
  4. Keep dative before accusative inside the clitic cluster.
  5. Among full phrases, prefer given before new and short before heavy unless contrast motivates fronting.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Replace both objects with clitics

Лука је Ани вратио кључ → Лука јој га је вратио.

Luka returned the key to Ana → Luka returned it to her. Answer: dative јој before accusative га; auxiliary је last.

Task 2: Put the known theme first

Коме сте показали план? — План смо показали новом архитекти.

Who did you show the plan to? — We showed the plan to the new architect. Answer: known план precedes the focused dative recipient.

Common Mistakes

Copying English position instead of marking case

❌ Дала сам моја сестра резервни кључ.

Incorrect—the recipient must be dative: мојој сестри.

✅ Дала сам мојој сестри резервни кључ.

I gave my sister the spare key. (female speaker)

Reversing clitics

❌ Марко га ми је показао на мапи.

Incorrect—dative ми precedes accusative га.

✅ Марко ми га је показао на мапи.

Marko showed it to me on the map.

Treating full-object order as rigid

❌ Датив увек мора стајати испред акузатива.

Incorrect claim—full noun phrases follow information structure and weight; only the clitic cluster has a fixed dative-before-accusative order.

✅ Извештај смо послали свим регионалним канцеларијама.

We sent the report to all the regional offices.

Starting with weak objects

❌ Му га је Јована послала јуче.

Incorrect—weak clitics cannot begin the clause.

✅ Јована му га је послала јуче.

Jovana sent it to him yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • Full objects tend toward dative–accusative, but given-before-new and end weight can reverse them.
  • Case endings preserve recipient and theme roles under reordering.
  • Inside a clitic cluster, dative precedes accusative/genitive.
  • Clitics retrieve given unstressed participants; full forms carry contrast or lexical content.
  • Reordering changes topic and focus even when the basic event remains the same.
