Modifier Order and Scope inside the Noun Phrase

Serbian modifiers agree with their noun, but agreement does not make their order free. The neutral noun phrase has an outer-to-inner hierarchy: quantifying and deictic material comes early, possessors and numerals narrow the set, and descriptive or relational adjectives occur closer to the noun. Moving a modifier can change scope, grouping, contrast, or register even when all endings remain grammatical.

The neutral stacking template

A useful productive order is:

quantifier → demonstrative → possessive → ordinal/cardinal → descriptive adjective → relational adjective → noun

Not every phrase fills every slot, and some meanings require a different structure. The template predicts ordinary combinations such as:

Прочитала сам све ове моје три нове књиге током распуста.

I read all three of these new books of mine during the break. (female speaker)

То је био мој први озбиљан истраживачки пројекат.

That was my first serious research project.

Донели су нам оне две велике стаклене вазе.

They brought us those two large glass vases.

In the last phrase, demonstrative оне scopes over numeral две; descriptive size велике precedes material/relational стаклене, which forms a tighter unit with вазе. English has its own adjective-order preferences, but copying them word for word is unreliable because Serbian demonstratives, possessives, numerals, and adjectives interact through case and agreement.

For the general inventory of NP constituents, see Noun Phrase Order. This page concentrates on the scope contrasts created when several modifiers are stacked.

💡
Build a long NP from the noun outward: noun + closest class/material modifier, then description, numeral, possessor, demonstrative, and outer quantifier.

Demonstrative plus possessive

Serbian can combine a demonstrative and possessive where English often uses this … of mine.

Ова моја стара фотографија настала је на Златибору.

This old photograph of mine was taken on Zlatibor.

Не свиђа ми се та твоја нова навика.

I don't like that new habit of yours.

The neutral order is ова/та + моја/твоја + adjective + noun. Possessive-first моја ова фотографија is not a neutral equivalent. It requires an unusual corrective context, and many speakers will reject it rather than infer a useful scope difference.

Demonstrative and possessive agree with the noun in gender, number, and case:

Разговарали смо о тим њеним необичним предлозима.

We discussed those unusual proposals of hers.

All three modifiers and plural noun are locative after о: тим њеним необичним предлозима. Reordering cannot repair a wrong ending.

Possessive and descriptive adjective

With possessive pronouns, possessor-before-description is the dependable neutral baseline: моја нова књига, његов стари капут. Name-derived possessive adjectives allow more flexibility because they can form a close identifying or authorial unit with the noun.

Петрову нову књигу сам купила, а старо издање већ имам.

I bought Petar's new book, and I already own the old edition. (female speaker)

Нову Петрову књигу сам купила чим је објављена.

I bought Petar's new book as soon as it was published. (female speaker)

Both orders occur in contemporary Serbian. Петрову нову књигу readily contrasts a new item within the set associated with Petar; нову Петрову књигу can group Петрову књигу more tightly and describe that work as new. Context and prosody do much of the interpretive work, so adjective-before-possessive is not automatically a marked correction.

Ordinals and cardinals have scope

Order between an ordinal and cardinal changes which set is counted.

Прочитала сам прва два поглавља романа.

I read the first two chapters of the novel. (female speaker)

Прва два поглавља selects positions one and two in one ordered sequence. Reversed два прва поглавља needs two separately relevant opening chapters, for example from two books.

Упоредила сам два прва поглавља из различитих романа.

I compared two opening chapters from different novels. (female speaker)

The same words are grammatical in both orders, but the scope differs: first [two chapters] versus two [first chapters]. This is a genuine semantic contrast, not free variation.

With a possessive, ordinal, cardinal, and adjective, the neutral grouping remains layered:

Представили смо наша прва два велика пројекта.

We presented our first two major projects.

Наша contains the set, прва два selects its earliest two members, and велика describes the projects.

Descriptive and relational adjectives

A relational adjective classifies a noun by material, field, place, institution, or purpose: стаклена ваза, градски превоз, школска библиотека, научни часопис. It typically stands closer to the noun than a descriptive property.

Отворена је нова градска библиотека у нашем крају.

A new city library has opened in our neighborhood.

Купили су малу црвену кожну торбу.

They bought a small red leather bag.

Neutral grouping is нова [градска библиотека] and мала црвена [кожна торба]. Moving the relational adjective outward can force a special contrast or change the grouping rather than simply preserve the meaning.

Тражим црвену малу торбу, не црвену велику.

I'm looking for the small red bag, not the large red one. (marked size contrast within the red set)

Neutral description would usually be малу црвену торбу. The marked order црвену малу first establishes the red subset, then contrasts size. Without the explicit alternative, many speakers prefer the neutral sequence.

💡
When two orders are both possible, paraphrase their grouping with brackets. Прва [два поглавља] and два [прва поглавља] count different sets.

Numeral phrases form their own agreement domain

After два/две, три, четири, adjectives and nouns use the small-number form; after пет and higher, the counted phrase is genitive plural.

Ове три важне одлуке промениће начин рада.

These three important decisions will change how the work is done.

Свих ових пет важних одлука тиче се новог буџета.

All five of these important decisions concern the new budget.

In the second sentence, свих ових пет важних одлука is a genitive-shaped numeral phrase, while singular тиче се agrees according to the syntax of the higher numeral construction. Do not copy the ending pattern from три одлуке merely because modifier order looks similar.

The ordering template and agreement rules solve different problems: order establishes scope, while morphology links the modifiers to the counted noun.

The case patterns selected by different numbers are treated fully under Numeral Government.

Postnominal modifiers

A simple descriptive adjective normally precedes the noun in neutral contemporary Serbian: важна одлука, тиха улица, занимљив предлог. Postposition has special uses.

A heavy adjective phrase naturally follows the noun in (formal) or edited prose because keeping all of it before the noun would be cumbersome.

Комисија је усвојила одлуку важну за све запослене у установи.

The committee adopted a decision important to all employees of the institution. (formal)

Тражимо решење прихватљиво и станарима и власнику зграде.

We are seeking a solution acceptable to both the tenants and the building owner. (formal)

The postnominal phrases важну за… and прихватљиво и… are heavy and restrictive: they identify which decision or solution is relevant. Their adjective still agrees with the noun.

A bare postnominal adjective is much more marked and often (literary) or rhetorical.

Пред њима се простирала равница тиха и сребрна под месечином.

Before them stretched a plain, quiet and silver under the moonlight. (literary)

Neutral prose would use тиха и сребрна равница or a relative clause. Do not turn noun–adjective order into an everyday alternative to adjective–noun.

A scope diagnostic

For a stacked noun phrase:

  1. find the head noun;
  2. place classifying/material adjectives closest to it;
  3. add descriptions outside that unit;
  4. determine whether an ordinal scopes over a cardinal or vice versa;
  5. add possessive, demonstrative, and outer quantifier;
  6. verify agreement across the whole phrase;
  7. if a modifier follows the noun, identify heaviness, restriction, contrast, or literary effect.

Поклонили смо јој све оне три старе породичне фотографије.

We gave her all three of those old family photographs.

Outer све includes the full set, оне identifies it, три counts it, старе describes age, and relational породичне forms the closest unit with фотографије.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build and paraphrase

Arrange све / ове / моје / три / старе / породичне / фотографије into a neutral NP. Then move one modifier to create an explicit contrast and paraphrase the changed grouping rather than calling it mere emphasis.

Task 2: Test ordinal scope

Write one context for прва два извештаја and another for два прва извештаја. Explain what set exists in each context and keep all agreement forms correct.

Common Mistakes

❌ Моја ова три књиге су на столу.

Incorrect neutral order — demonstrative ова precedes possessive моја.

✅ Ове моје три књиге су на столу.

These three books of mine are on the table.

❌ Купила сам кожну малу црвену торбу без посебног контраста.

Incorrect neutral stacking — material кожну belongs closer to the noun, while size normally precedes color.

✅ Купила сам малу црвену кожну торбу.

I bought a small red leather bag. (female speaker)

❌ Прочитала сам два прва поглавља једног романа и мислим на поглавља један и два.

Incorrect scope for the intended meaning — in one sequence, ‘chapters one and two’ are прва два поглавља.

✅ Прочитала сам прва два поглавља једног романа.

I read the first two chapters of a novel. (female speaker)

❌ Комисија је усвојила одлуку важан за све запослене у установи.

Incorrect agreement — postnominal важан must agree with feminine accusative одлуку as важну.

✅ Усвојили су меру важну за све запослене у установи.

They adopted a measure important to all employees of the institution. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Agreement licenses recognition, not arbitrary modifier permutation.
  • Neutral stacking proceeds from outer quantification/deixis toward numerals, descriptions, relational modifiers, and the noun.
  • Demonstrative normally precedes possessive; relational/material adjectives stay closer to the noun than broad descriptions.
  • Прва два and два прва differ in scope.
  • Marked inversion needs a contrast and can change grouping.
  • Heavy restrictive modifiers can follow the noun in formal prose; bare postnominal adjectives are often literary or rhetorical.
