Asking for help in Serbian is not a matter of attaching one word for please. A natural request combines the right relationship (ти or polite/plural ви), the correct case after the main verb, and an amount of indirectness appropriate to the effort involved. Clarification questions use the same system, so a few productive frames let you ask about anything from a ticket machine to an unfamiliar word.
Four useful levels of request
These forms differ in directness, but none is automatically polite or rude.
| Frame | Typical setting |
|---|---|
| Помози ми, молим те. | direct request to one familiar person |
| Помозите ми, молим вас. | direct but courteous request to a stranger or several people |
| Можете ли да ми помогнете? | neutral polite question |
| Да ли бисте могли да ми помогнете? | more deferential request for a non-routine effort |
Можеш ли да ми помогнеш да спустим ову кутију с полице?
Can you help me take this box down from the shelf? (informal singular)
Извините, можете ли да ми помогнете око аутомата за карте?
Excuse me, could you help me with the ticket machine? (polite or plural)
Да ли бисте могли да ми покажете где се предаје овај захтев?
Would you be able to show me where this application is submitted? (deferential)
The conditional бисте могли gives the listener more room to refuse. It is useful when the favor takes time, but it may sound needlessly ceremonious when asking a friend to pass a pen. Direct помозите is entirely natural in an urgent situation; intonation and context matter as much as sentence shape.
Помоћи takes a dative person
The neutral pattern is помоћи некоме. The person receiving help is dative: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им or a full phrase such as старијој госпођи. English help me gives no visible warning about this case.
Треба ми помоћ; не могу сам да подигнем колица уз степенице.
I need help; I can't lift the stroller up the stairs by myself. (male speaker)
Молим вас, помозите овој госпођи да пронађе своје место.
Please help this lady find her seat. (polite or plural)
Сам agrees with a male speaker; a female speaker says сама. In the second example, dative овој госпођи names the person helped. The finite verb after да agrees with that person: the lady will find the seat.
There are three productive ways to name the task:
- помоћи некоме да + present: help someone perform an action;
- помоћи некоме око + genitive: help with a practical matter;
- помоћи некоме у + locative: help in an activity or process.
Колега ми је помогао да вратим документ из резервне копије.
A colleague helped me restore the document from a backup.
Можете ли да нам помогнете око пријаве за курс?
Could you help us with the course registration?
Notice the clitic order in ми је помогао: dative ми precedes third-person auxiliary је. The dedicated помагати / помоћи reference covers the aspect pair and its narrower constructions.
Asking someone to do something
When the request names a concrete action, common frames include можете ли да..., молим вас да..., and perfective замолити некога да.... With молити / замолити, the person asked is accusative, unlike the dative person helped.
Молим вас да ми пошаљете упутство на имејл.
Please send me the instructions by email. (polite or plural)
Замолила сам службеника да ми објасни последњу ставку на рачуну.
I asked the clerk to explain the last item on the bill to me. (female speaker)
In замолила сам службеника, animate masculine службеника is accusative. Inside the request, ми is dative recipient of the explanation. These roles remain distinct even when both refer to people.
Asking someone to repeat or slow down
Use the perfective imperatives поновите and објасните when one successful repetition or explanation is wanted. Говорите спорије is imperfective because it asks the listener to continue speaking in a different manner.
Извините, нисам добро чуо. Можете ли да поновите последњу реченицу?
Sorry, I didn't hear properly. Could you repeat the last sentence? (male speaker)
Молим вас, говорите мало спорије; још учим српски.
Please speak a little more slowly; I'm still learning Serbian.
Можете ли то да објасните на једноставнији начин?
Could you explain that in a simpler way?
Нисам чуо/чула means that the sound did not reach you clearly. Нисам разумео/разумела means that you heard it but did not grasp the meaning. Не слушам вас means “I am not listening to you,” which can sound like a deliberate refusal rather than a hearing problem.
Short Молим? can mean “Pardon?” or “Could you repeat that?” Its force comes from intonation. In a noisy or sensitive situation, the fuller sentence is clearer.
Checking a word or your interpretation
Шта значи...? makes the word or expression nominative because it is the subject of значи. Како се каже...? is an impersonal/reflexive formula, literally “how is it said?”
Шта значи реч „рок“ у овом обавештењу?
What does the word ‘deadline’ mean in this notice?
Како се на српском каже „power outlet“?
How do you say ‘power outlet’ in Serbian?
Да ли то значи да морам поново да попуним цео образац?
Does that mean I have to fill in the entire form again?
Нисам сигурна да сам добро разумела: састанак почиње у пола девет, зар не?
I'm not sure I understood correctly: the meeting starts at eight thirty, right? (female speaker)
The last frame is useful because it offers your interpretation for confirmation. Feminine сигурна, разумела agrees with the speaker; a male speaker uses сигуран, разумео.
Responding to a request for help
Natural acceptance can be short: наравно, може, сад ћу, or нема проблема. A refusal is often easier to receive when it includes a brief reason or an alternative.
Наравно, покажите ми шта вам није јасно.
Of course; show me what isn't clear to you. (polite or plural)
Извините, не знам како ради тај уређај, али можете да питате колегу на шалтеру.
Sorry, I don't know how that device works, but you can ask the colleague at the counter.
Serbian does not require an elaborate apology for every inability to help. A concise извините, не могу сада can be appropriate; offering the next useful step makes the response more cooperative.
Упомоћ! is an urgent cry for help, not a routine way to ask about a form or directions.
Упомоћ! Неко је пао у воду!
Help! Someone has fallen into the water! (emergency)
Situational dialogue
— Извините, можете ли да ми помогнете? Не разумем како се купује карта на овом аутомату. — Наравно. Прво изаберите одредиште. — Молим? Нисам чула последњу реч. — Одредиште, место до којег путујете. — Сад разумем, хвала вам.
— Excuse me, could you help me? I don't understand how to buy a ticket from this machine. — Of course. First choose the destination. — Pardon? I didn't hear the last word. — Destination, the place you're traveling to. — Now I understand; thank you. (female traveler; polite exchange)
The traveler uses polite можете, вам, feminine чула, and dative ми with помогнете. The helper answers with polite imperative изаберите, keeping the relationship consistent.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Change the relationship
Ask one close friend and then one unfamiliar employee to help you find a reservation. Change можеш/можете, помогнеш/помогнете, and те/вас consistently.
Task 2: Repair a misunderstanding
Say that you did not hear one word, ask for repetition, then offer your interpretation with да ли то значи да.... Write one version for a male speaker and one for a female speaker.
Common Mistakes
❌ Можете ли да ме помогнете око кофера?
Incorrect case—the ordinary person helped is dative ми, not accusative ме.
✅ Можете ли да ми помогнете да унесем кофер у воз?
Could you help me carry the suitcase onto the train?
❌ Извините, можеш ли да ми покажете излаз?
Incorrect person-number agreement—можеш addresses one person in the singular, but покажете addresses a plural addressee.
✅ Извините, можете ли да ми покажете споредни излаз?
Excuse me, could you show me the side exit?
❌ Шта значи ову скраћеницу?
Incorrect case—the abbreviation is the nominative subject of значи.
✅ Шта значи ова скраћеница на дну обрасца?
What does this abbreviation at the bottom of the form mean?
❌ Не слушам вас; можете ли да поновите?
Wrong meaning if the sound was unclear—не слушам вас says that you are not listening.
✅ Нисам вас добро чула; можете ли да поновите број?
I didn't hear you clearly; could you repeat the number? (female speaker)
❌ Госпођо, помози ми да попуним ово.
Inappropriately familiar in a neutral formal interaction—the title calls for a Ви-form.
✅ Госпођо, можете ли да ми помогнете да попуним овај део?
Ma'am, could you help me fill in this section?
