The everyday Serbian frame for helping is помагати / помоћи некоме: the person helped is dative. English treats that person as a direct object, so help me must be learned as помози ми, not by choosing an accusative pronoun. The verb pair also has two different present stems, so the infinitives alone do not provide enough usable information.
Principal forms
| Form | помагати (imperfective) | помоћи (perfective) |
|---|---|---|
| present | помажем, помажеш, помаже, помажемо, помажете, помажу | помогнем, помогнеш, помогне, помогнемо, помогнете, помогну |
| l-participle | помагао / помагала | помогао / помогла |
| imperative | помажи, помажимо, помажите | помози, помозимо, помозите |
| future, 1st singular | помагаћу | помоћи ћу |
Several alternations must be memorized: помагати — помажем — помажу, but помоћи — помогнем — помогну — помогао — помози. Because помоћи ends in -ћи, future auxiliary is written separately: помоћи ћу.
Сваке суботе помажем родитељима у башти.
Every Saturday I help my parents in the garden.
Комшиница нам је помогла кад нам се покварио ауто.
Our neighbor helped us when our car broke down.
The first sentence presents regular assistance; the second presents one effective act of help.
The person helped is dative
Names, nouns, adjectives, and pronouns all enter the dative slot: помоћи Ани, новом колеги, деци; помоћи ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им.
Можеш ли да помогнеш новој колегиници око пријаве?
Can you help the new colleague with the application?
Студенти су помогли старијем човеку да унесе кофере у воз.
The students helped an elderly man carry his suitcases onto the train.
English supplies no overt to, but Serbian dative is obligatory in this neutral construction. Animate masculine старијем човеку makes the contrast with accusative старијег човека visible.
The same learner strategy applies to other lexically selected recipients in dative-governing verbs and adjectives.
A narrower accusative pattern
Standard descriptions also record помагати/помоћи некога when someone is supported materially, continuously, or comprehensively—especially through money. This is a real but semantically narrower construction, not the default translation of English help someone.
Фондација годинама помаже талентоване ученике стипендијама.
For years the foundation has supported talented pupils with scholarships. (narrow material-support use)
For ordinary assistance with an action, use the productive dative: помоћи ученицима да се пријаве. A learner should not generalize the specialized accusative pattern to requests such as помози ми.
Naming the task or action
The commonest way to say what the person is helped to do is да + present. The embedded verb agrees with the person receiving help, not automatically with the helper.
Помогла сам брату да састави нови сто.
I helped my brother assemble the new table. (female speaker)
Молим вас, помозите ми да пронађем перон број шест.
Please help me find platform six. (plural or polite)
In помогла сам брату да састави, the speaker helped, but the brother assembled. English uses help + object + infinitive; Serbian finite да-clause makes the second actor clear.
An infinitive complement after помоћи is also attested in standard usage, although it is relatively rare in contemporary Serbian: помогао ми је пренети кутије. Its understood actor must be recoverable from context; here dative ми identifies the person carrying the boxes. The more usual everyday construction is помогао ми је да пренесем кутије. Do not mix the patterns as да пренети.
Noun phrases commonly identify the area of help:
| Frame | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| помоћи некоме око + genitive | help with a practical task or matter |
| помоћи некоме у + locative | help in an activity, process, or field |
| помоћи некоме при + locative | assist during a procedure; formal/technical |
Пријатељи су нам помогли око селидбе.
Our friends helped us with the move.
Менторка ми је много помогла у писању завршног рада.
My supervisor helped me greatly in writing my final thesis.
Техничар ће вам помоћи при инсталацији програма.
A technician will assist you during the program installation. (formal/technical)
С(а) + instrumental for the task is widespread in conversation, but око + genitive, у + locative, or a да-clause often states the relation more precisely in careful Serbian.
Aspect and related verbs
Use imperfective помагати for duration, repetition, background assistance, or the general activity. Use perfective помоћи when one intervention has a relevant result.
Док смо паковали књиге, Јован нам је помагао да обележимо кутије.
While we were packing the books, Jovan was helping us label the boxes.
Јован нам је помогао да завршимо паковање пре мрака.
Jovan helped us finish packing before dark.
The perfective does not guarantee that every larger goal succeeded; it bounds the helpful intervention. Context supplies the scale of the result.
Припомоћи means lend a hand or contribute some help, while потпомагати means support or facilitate and is common in formal or institutional language. Одмагати / одмоћи means hinder or make matters worse.
Неколико пролазника је припомогло да померимо покварени аутомобил.
Several passersby lent a hand in moving the broken-down car.
Непроверене информације не помажу; само одмажу истрази.
Unverified information doesn't help; it only hinders the investigation.
These are lexical relatives with different contributions, not automatic substitutes for the core pair.
Clitic order and reflexivity
Dative clitics occupy the normal early cluster. With third-person singular auxiliary је, the dative comes first: ми је помогла. With other perfect auxiliaries, the auxiliary precedes the dative: сам му помогао.
Сестра ми је помогла да попуним образац.
My sister helped me fill out the form.
Јуче сам им помогао око припреме сале.
Yesterday I helped them prepare the hall. (male speaker)
Ordinary помагати / помоћи is not a reflexive verb. To mean help oneself, use stressed dative себи; for reciprocal help, use једни другима.
Прво морамо да помогнемо себи, па тек онда другима.
First we have to help ourselves, and only then others.
У нашем тиму сви помажу једни другима кад се рок приближи.
In our team everyone helps one another when the deadline approaches.
The form се cannot replace either dative expression.
Commands and polite requests
Perfective помози/помозите asks for one useful intervention. Imperfective помажи/помажите suits repeated or continuing help.
Помозите ми, молим вас, да подигнем овај кофер.
Please help me lift this suitcase. (plural or polite)
Помажи баки док јој рука не зарасте.
Keep helping Grandma until her arm heals. (informal singular)
Micro-dialogue
„Можеш ли да ми помогнеш око овог обрасца?“ — „Наравно. Шта ти није јасно?“ — „Помози ми да пронађем број пријаве.“
‘Can you help me with this form?’ — ‘Of course. What isn't clear to you?’ — ‘Help me find the application number.’
The same dative clitic ми marks the person helped, while око + genitive and да + present identify two kinds of task complement.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Keep the person dative
Translate “Ana helps the new neighbor” and “Ana helped her yesterday.” Use a full dative noun phrase in the first sentence and a dative clitic in the second; make the past participle agree with Ana.
Task 2: Add the task
Express help with a move using око + genitive, help in writing a report using у + locative, and help someone carry a box using да + present.
Common Mistakes
❌ Помози ме да пронађем адресу.

Help me find the address.
❌ Помогла сам новом колегу да припреми презентацију.
Incorrect in this action-assistance frame — the colleague must be dative.

She helped me after the meeting.
❌ Поможи ми да отворити прозор.
Incorrect form and spelling — the imperative is помози, and after да use finite отворим.

Help me open the window.
❌ Колеге су нам помогле се око припреме догађаја.
Incorrect — ordinary помоћи is not reflexive; нам already marks the people helped.

Our colleagues helped us prepare the event.
Key Takeaways
- Learn both stem sets: помагати — помажем — помажу and помоћи — помогнем — помогну — помогао — помози.
- Neutral ordinary assistance takes a dative person: помоћи некоме.
- Да + present identifies the helped action; око + genitive, у + locative, and formal при + locative identify task domains.
- Accusative помагати некога exists in a narrower material or comprehensive-support sense; it is not the default learner frame.
- Dative clitics follow normal cluster order: ми је помогла, сам им помогао.
