Travel and Holidays

Travel language makes Serbian spatial cases visible. A place may be a destination (у Грчку, на море), a location (у Грчкој, на мору), or a source (из Грчке, с мора). Transport normally appears in the instrumental, and motion verbs distinguish an ongoing trip, one departure, one arrival, and a completed return.

Destination, stay, and source

Store travel places in three-part sets:

Place typeDestinationLocationSource
country/cityу Италију / у Риму Италији / у Римуиз Италије / из Рима
seasideна морена морус мора
mountainsна планинуна планинис планине
holiday/leaveна одморна одморус одмора

Следећег месеца путујемо у Италију, а најдуже ћемо остати у Болоњи.

Next month we're traveling to Italy, and we'll stay longest in Bologna.

Feminine destination у Италију is accusative; location у Болоњи is locative. With conventional на-places, destination also uses accusative and location uses locative:

У јулу идемо на море, али ћемо два дана провести и на планини.

In July we're going to the seaside, but we'll also spend two days in the mountains.

The choice of у or на is lexical and semantic, then the case marks goal versus setting. Review у and на for the broader map.

💡
Do not learn only море or Италија. Learn the travel triplet на море — на мору — с мора or у Италију — у Италији — из Италије.

На мору is the seaside; у мору is in the water

This contrast is especially important on holiday.

Родитељи су на мору, а деца су већ сат времена у мору.

The parents are at the seaside, while the children have already been in the sea for an hour.

На мору describes a seaside stay. У мору places someone physically in the water. The coast itself is обала, and the beach is плажа:

Наш апартман је близу обале, десетак минута пешке од мирне плаже.

Our apartment is near the coast, about a ten-minute walk from a quiet beach.

Близу and од govern genitive: обале, плаже. A route along the coast can be expressed with дуж + genitive (дуж обале) or уз + accusative (уз обалу), with slightly different spatial viewpoints.

Going, traveling, arriving, and returning

Ићи is the basic imperfective “go,” while отићи presents one departure. Путовати foregrounds the journey. Стићи presents arrival, and reflexive вратити се presents return.

Сваког лета идемо у исто приморско место, али ове године ћемо отпутовати раније.

Every summer we go to the same coastal town, but this year we'll set off earlier.

Кад стигнемо у хотел, јавићемо се породици и мало се одморити.

When we arrive at the hotel, we'll contact the family and rest a little.

Perfective present стигнемо is future-oriented after кад. Reflexive јавићемо се keeps се in the clitic cluster. On the return:

Враћамо се с одмора у недељу касно увече.

We're returning from vacation late on Sunday evening.

С одмора is source from a conventional на одмору location. Do not replace it with из одмора.

Means of transport uses the instrumental

TransportExpression
by planeавионом
by trainвозом
by busаутобусом
by carколима / аутомобилом
on footпешке

До Будимпеште путујемо возом, а од станице до хотела идемо пешке.

We're traveling to Budapest by train, and we're walking from the station to the hotel.

Serbian does not normally copy English take a train as узети воз. Use ићи/путовати возом. Accompaniment is different: са пријатељима uses са + instrumental.

Путујем са две пријатељице, али се враћам авионом сама.

I'm traveling with two female friends, but I'm flying back alone. (female speaker)

The same case has two frames: bare instrumental авионом marks means; са + instrumental marks companions.

Accommodation and reservations

Одсести presents choosing and staying at accommodation as one bounded event; imperfective одседати describes repeated or ongoing stays. Location remains locative.

Одсели смо у малом породичном хотелу недалеко од старог града.

We stayed at a small family-run hotel not far from the old town.

To arrange accommodation, use резервисати + accusative and state the period with од... до... + genitive.

Желела бих да резервишем двокреветну собу од 6. до 10. августа.

I'd like to book a double room from August 6 to August 10. (female speaker)

The day numbers are read as genitive ordinals: од шестог до десетог августа. Useful nouns include смештај, апартман, соба, ноћење, and рецепција. Апартман often means a self-contained holiday rental, not necessarily the same thing as English apartment in every market.

Holiday, vacation, and leave

Одмор can mean rest, a holiday/vacation, or leave from work. Context or a modifier makes the sense clear: летњи одмор, годишњи одмор, кратак одмор.

Узео сам две недеље годишњег одмора и планирам да их проведем на Јадрану.

I took two weeks of annual leave and plan to spend them on the Adriatic. (male speaker)

Летовање is a summer holiday, often but not necessarily at the seaside; зимовање is a winter holiday. The verbs летовати and зимовати describe spending those holidays.

Прошле године смо летовали у Црној Гори, а ове зиме ћемо зимовати на Златибору.

Last year we spent our summer holiday in Montenegro, and this winter we'll take a winter holiday on Zlatibor.

This guide uses Ekavian лето/летовање. Ijekavian Serbian has љето/љетовање; both follow the same case and verb patterns. Keep one reflex consistently within an example.

Plans, duration, and activities

Use accusative for measured duration and током + genitive for an interval containing events.

На острву остајемо седам дана, а током боравка планирамо два излета бродом.

We're staying on the island for seven days, and during the stay we're planning two boat excursions.

Седам дана measures duration. Током боравка is a genitive frame. Activities commonly take на + accusative as destinations/events: ићи на излет, на крстарење, на плажу.

Ако не буде превруће, ујутру ћемо ићи на излет до оближњег манастира.

If it isn't too hot, we'll go on an excursion to the nearby monastery in the morning.

До + genitive gives a boundary or endpoint до оближњег манастира. It does not by itself describe entering the building.

Polite travel questions

At a hotel or station, match polite ви forms throughout:

Извините, можете ли да нам кажете да ли аутобус стаје близу старог града?

Excuse me, could you tell us whether the bus stops near the old town?

Нам is dative recipient of the information; близу старог града is genitive. A direct Где је...? question is not rude by itself, but извините and a polite modal fit requests that interrupt a stranger.

Situational dialogue

— Где путујете овог лета? — Идемо на море у Грчку. Летећемо до Солуна, а онда ћемо изнајмити ауто. — Где ћете одсести? — У апартману близу плаже. Остајемо десет дана и планирамо један излет бродом. — Када се враћате? — Враћамо се с одмора 18. августа.

— Where are you traveling this summer? — We're going to the seaside in Greece. We'll fly to Thessaloniki and then rent a car. — Where will you stay? — In an apartment near the beach. We're staying ten days and planning one boat trip. — When are you coming back? — We're returning from vacation on August 18.

The dialogue combines destination на море/у Грчку, location у апартману, duration десет дана, means бродом, and source с одмора.

Practice

Task 1: Build a travel map

Choose one city and one на-place. Give destination, location, and source phrases for each, then use them with отићи, бити, and вратити се.

Task 2: Plan a stay

Book a room for four nights, name the transport in the instrumental, and describe two activities with на + accusative. Add a polite question to the receptionist.

Common Mistakes

❌ Следеће недеље путујемо у Грчкој.

Incorrect destination case—movement to Greece requires accusative у Грчку.

✅ Следеће недеље путујемо у Грчку.

Next week we're traveling to Greece.

❌ Ушли смо на море да се окупамо.

Incorrect physical destination—на море means to the seaside; entering the water requires у море.

✅ Ушли смо у море да се окупамо.

We went into the sea for a swim.

❌ До Загреба узимамо воз, а затим узимамо аутобус.

Unnatural English calque—means of transport normally uses ићи/путовати plus instrumental.

✅ До Загреба путујемо возом, а затим настављамо аутобусом.

We're traveling to Zagreb by train and then continuing by bus.

❌ Вратили смо се из одмора у понедељак.

Incorrect source pairing—на одмору pairs with с одмора.

✅ Вратили смо се с одмора у понедељак.

We returned from vacation on Monday.
