Directions and Travel

Serbian directions distinguish destination, location, source, path, and means of transport through cases and prepositions. English to, at, and from are not enough to predict у музеј — у музеју — из музеја or на станицу — на станици — са станице. Learn each place as a three-part set and directions become much more systematic.

Asking where and how to get there

Use Где је...? to ask for location. Use Како да стигнем до...? when you need a route. До takes genitive and marks a reachable endpoint or limit.

Извините, где је најближа аутобуска станица?

Excuse me, where is the nearest bus stop?

Како да стигнем до железничке станице одавде?

How do I get to the railway station from here?

Feminine nominative најближа аутобуска станица follows где је. After до, the same noun phrase becomes genitive до железничке станице. Одавде is the adverb “from here.”

Other useful route questions are:

Да ли је далеко и може ли да се стигне пешке?

Is it far, and can you get there on foot?

Који аутобус иде до центра и где да изађем?

Which bus goes to the city center, and where should I get off?

Impersonal може ли да се стигне avoids naming a traveler and asks about practical accessibility. Пешке is an adverb; it takes no preposition.

💡
Ask где for a location, куда for a route or direction, and одакле for a source. In everyday questions, како да стигнем is often the most useful route frame.

Destination versus location with у and на

With у/на, accusative normally marks a destination and locative an existing setting.

PlaceDestinationLocationSource
museumу музеју музејуиз музеја
hotelу хотелу хотелуиз хотела
stationна станицуна станициса станице
airportна аеродромна аеродромуса аеродрома
squareна тргна тргуса трга

Прво идемо у музеј, а после се налазимо с пријатељима на главном тргу.

First we're going to the museum, and afterward we're meeting friends in the main square.

У музеј is the destination; на главном тргу is the meeting location. A verb of movement does not automatically force accusative when the activity happens inside a setting:

Туристи шетају у старом граду, а затим иду на тврђаву.

The tourists are walking around the old town and then going to the fortress.

У старом граду is locative because walking happens there. На тврђаву is accusative because the fortress is the next destination.

Choice of у versus на is partly conventional. Store у хотелу, but на аеродрому; у биоскопу, but на концерту. The у/на guide gives the larger system.

Giving a route politely

Directions to one stranger use the Ви imperative in -те. A route usually combines imperfective идите / наставите for an ongoing stretch with perfective скрените / пређите for one transition.

Наставите право до кружног тока, а онда скрените у прву улицу лево.

Continue straight to the roundabout, then turn into the first street on the left. (polite singular or plural)

Пређите улицу и наставите поред парка до великог кружног тока.

Cross the street and continue past the park to the large roundabout.

The street is accusative direct object of прећи. Поред парка and до кружног тока take genitive. The imperatives all match respectful/plural Ви.

For a friend addressed as ти, use иди, скрени, пређи, настави:

Иди низ улицу, пређи преко моста и скрени десно код поште.

Go down the street, cross the bridge, and turn right by the post office. (informal singular)

Path expressions preserve different government:

FrameCaseMeaning
кроз паркaccusativethrough the park
низ / уз улицуaccusativedown / up or along the street
преко мостаgenitiveacross the bridge
поред банкеgenitivepast/beside the bank
према центруdativetoward the center

These phrases are not interchangeable synonyms for English along. They describe different geometries: path through, path beside, crossing, or orientation.

Landmarks: location is not direction

Common landmarks use genitive after испред, иза, поред, код, близу, преко пута, and spatial између.

Улаз је иза банке, између апотеке и мале књижаре.

The entrance is behind the bank, between the pharmacy and a small bookstore.

Такси-станица је преко пута хотела, одмах поред главног излаза.

The taxi stand is across from the hotel, right beside the main exit.

In између апотеке и мале књижаре, both landmarks are genitive in standard spatial use. Learners should store the whole coordinated phrase rather than leave the second noun in nominative.

Transport: instrumental without a preposition

The means of transport is commonly bare instrumental: аутобусом, трамвајем, возом, таксијем, бициклом. Колима is the usual plural-form instrumental for “by car.”

До Новог Сада можете возом, а до смештаја са станице таксијем.

You can get to Novi Sad by train, and from the station to your accommodation by taxi.

Идемо колима до аеродрома, али се у центар враћамо аутобусом.

We're going to the airport by car, but we're returning to the city center by bus.

Do not add са to mark the vehicle. Са аутобусом means “with the bus” in an unusual accompaniment sense, not ordinary “by bus.” A location inside the vehicle uses у + locative: у аутобусу.

Getting on, off, and changing lines

Use directional frames with the transition verb and locative frames for the stopping point.

Уђите у аутобус број 31 и изађите на трећој станици.

Get on bus number 31 and get off at the third stop.

У аутобус is the destination of entering. На трећој станици locates the point where the exit occurs. For a connection:

На Тргу републике преседните на тролејбус број 29.

At Republic Square, change to trolleybus number 29.

На Тргу републике is locative location; на тролејбус is accusative after пресести / преседати на.

Tickets and station questions

At a counter, one bounded purchase naturally takes perfective дати or купити, with polite Ви forms.

Једну повратну карту до Ниша за сутра, молим вас.

One return ticket to Niš for tomorrow, please.

Са ког перона полази воз за Суботицу?

Which platform does the train to Subotica depart from?

До Ниша takes genitive after до. Source са ког перона also takes genitive; воз за Суботицу uses за + accusative for the destination/service. Timetable language commonly contrasts полазак “departure” and долазак “arrival.”

Да ли овај воз стаје у Новом Београду и колико траје путовање?

Does this train stop in New Belgrade, and how long does the journey take?

Because the train stops within the place, у Новом Београду is locative. Колико траје asks duration without importing English take as a possession verb.

Situational dialogue

— Извините, како да стигнем до Народног музеја? — Идите право овом улицом, па код другог семафора скрените десно. Музеј је преко пута трга. — Да ли је далеко? — Није, има десетак минута пешке.

— Excuse me, how do I get to the National Museum? — Go straight along this street, then turn right at the second traffic light. The museum is across from the square. — Is it far? — No, it's about a ten-minute walk.

До Народног музеја is genitive, овом улицом is instrumental route, and код другог семафора is genitive landmark. Десетак gives an approximate quantity; има десетак минута пешке is a natural impersonal estimate.

💡
Repeat a direction back using its cases: до музеја, код семафора, преко пута трга. This checks both the route and the grammar.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build a place set

For хотел, станица, and аеродром, give destination, location, and source forms. Then use one in a route from the hotel to the station.

Task 2: Give formal and informal directions

Tell one stranger and then one friend to go straight, cross the street, and turn left. Change идите, пређите, скрените to иди, пређи, скрени without changing the case frames.

Common Mistakes

❌ Како да стигнем до железничка станица?

Incorrect—до requires genitive: железничке станице.

✅ Како да стигнем до железничке станице без преседања?

How do I get to the railway station without changing?

❌ Идите право и скрени лево код банке.

Incorrect address mismatch—идите is Ви/plural, but скрени is singular ти.

✅ Идите право и скрените лево код банке.

Go straight and turn left by the bank. (polite/plural)

❌ До центра идемо са аутобусом.

Incorrect for means of transport—use bare instrumental аутобусом.

✅ До центра идемо аутобусом, а враћамо се пешке.

We're going downtown by bus and walking back.

❌ Излазим у следећу станицу.

Incorrect place and case frame—get off at a stop with на + locative.

✅ Излазим на следећој станици и настављам пешке.

I'm getting off at the next stop and continuing on foot.

❌ Воз полази на трећег перона.

Incorrect source phrase—са + genitive gives са трећег перона.

✅ Воз полази са трећег перона у осам и двадесет.

The train leaves from platform three at 8:20.
