Sentence Adverbs and Stance

Sentence adverbs do not merely describe how an action happens. They comment on the proposition as a whole: how certain it is, where the information comes from, how the speaker evaluates it, or how it connects to the surrounding discourse. Можда ће доћи means that his coming is possible; it does not describe a “possible manner” of coming.

English has similar items—probably, fortunately, frankly, however—but Serbian placement interacts with flexible information structure and second-position clitics. Punctuation depends on whether an item is integrated into the clause or pronounced as a parenthetical comment; there is no rule that every sentence adverb automatically receives commas.

Possibility and certainty

StanceCommon itemsApproximate force
possibilityможда, могућеperhaps, possibly
probabilityвероватноprobably
strong confidenceсигурно, свакакоsurely/certainly
inference from evidenceочигледно, по свему судећиobviously, apparently
confirmationзаиста, стварноindeed, really

Можда ће воз каснити због радова на прузи.

The train may be late because of work on the line.

Вероватно су већ обавестили све путнике о промени перона.

They have probably already informed all the passengers about the platform change.

По свему судећи, преговори ће трајати дуже него што се очекивало.

Judging by all the evidence, the negotiations will last longer than expected.

The guide uses Ekavian вероватно. Ijekavian Serbian has вјероватно / vjerovatno; it is a regular reflex, not a different degree of certainty. Croatian standard vjerojatno has a different reflex and should not be blended into unmarked Serbian examples.

Можда normally combines directly with an indicative finite clause: можда долази, можда је дошао, можда ће доћи. Serbian does not require a special subjunctive mood after it.

Можда је Јасна оставила кључ код комшинице.

Maybe Jasna left the key with the neighbor.

💡
Choose the stance word according to evidence and commitment. Можда leaves a possibility open; вероватно ranks it as likely; очигледно presents a conclusion as evident from available signs.

Evaluation and speaker attitude

Нажалост “unfortunately” and срећом “fortunately” evaluate the entire event. На срећу is a synonymous case phrase; its noun remains in the accusative after на, whereas lexical срећом is historically/formally an instrumental noun form used adverbially.

Нажалост, лекар данас не прима пацијенте без заказаног термина.

Unfortunately, the doctor isn't seeing patients without an appointment today.

Срећом, нико није повређен када је грана пала на тротоар.

Fortunately, nobody was injured when the branch fell onto the pavement.

Наравно signals that the proposition is expected or readily accepted. It can answer a question on its own, or be integrated into a clause.

Наравно да можеш да позајмиш мој кишобран; врати га кад будеш могао.

Of course you can borrow my umbrella; return it when you can.

In наравно да, да introduces the proposition being endorsed. This pattern does not mean that all sentence adverbs govern да: вероватно ће доћи is neutral, while вероватно да ће доћи occurs but is a heavier construction and should not be treated as obligatory.

One form, two scopes: искрено, озбиљно, стварно

Some forms can be manner adverbs or comments on the speech act. Pausing and punctuation make the distinction visible in writing.

Искрено, не разумем зашто су одбили тако разуман предлог.

Frankly, I don't understand why they rejected such a reasonable proposal.

Одговорила је искрено и признала да је погрешила.

She answered honestly and admitted that she had made a mistake.

In the first, искрено means “to speak frankly” and frames the speaker's utterance. In the second, it describes the manner of answering. The same ambiguity appears in English honestly, but Serbian word order is freer, so intonation and context carry more of the distinction.

Озбиљно, зар мислиш да можемо све да завршимо до петка?

Seriously, do you think we can finish everything by Friday?

Комисија је озбиљно размотрила обе жалбе.

The committee considered both appeals seriously.

Reported evidence: наводно and тобоже

Наводно attributes a claim to another source without guaranteeing it. It is common in news and official discussion (journalistic/formal), though it also occurs in speech. Тобоже presents something as merely alleged or pretended and usually conveys skepticism or irony (marked, often informal).

Фирма ће наводно отворити још две продавнице до краја године.

The company will reportedly open two more shops by the end of the year.

Тобоже је заборавио договор, а јутрос ме је питао да ли план и даље важи.

He supposedly forgot the arrangement, yet this morning he asked whether the plan still stood.

Do not translate both mechanically as apparently. Наводно distances the speaker from a report; тобоже often casts doubt on someone's claim or performance.

Discourse connection: међутим, ипак, дакле

Some sentence-level items organize the relation between clauses. Међутим introduces contrast, ипак marks a result contrary to expectation, and дакле presents a conclusion or resumes a line of thought. They overlap with conjunctions, but they do not all join clauses in the same way as али “but.”

Прогноза је била лоша. Ипак, одлучили смо да кренемо рано ујутру.

The forecast was bad. Nevertheless, we decided to leave early in the morning.

Рок је истекао; међутим, систем још прихвата исправке.

The deadline has passed; however, the system is still accepting corrections.

Сви подаци су проверени; дакле, можемо да пошаљемо извештај.

All the data has been checked; therefore, we can send the report.

Avoid redundant али међутим in careful prose; use али or међутим unless the repetition is deliberately conversational.

For the larger system of conjunctions and linking expressions, continue with addition and contrast connectives.

Placement, clitics, and punctuation

Initial placement makes stance the frame: Вероватно ће се вратити. Medial or final placement can sound more like an afterthought: Вратиће се, вероватно. The truth conditions may be similar, but the information packaging differs.

Очигледно су нам послали стару верзију документа.

They have obviously sent us the old version of the document.

Послали су нам стару верзију документа, очигледно.

They sent us the old version of the document, evidently.

The final version is distinctly parenthetical and therefore separated by a comma. Integrated вероватно/сигурно normally needs no comma merely because it is an adverb. Initial evaluatives and connectors pronounced as detached comments are conventionally set off: Нажалост, ...; Међутим, ....

Clitics follow the first suitable constituent: Вероватно ће се вратити, Нажалост, нисмо га нашли. The comma after a detached comment does not invite a clitic to stand first: Serbian still requires a host inside the clause.

💡
Punctuation follows syntax and intonation, not a memorized list. An integrated modal adverb belongs inside the clause; a detached comment or connector is written parenthetically.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Manner or sentence stance?

Искрено, нисам очекивао позив, али сам на сва питања одговорио искрено.

Frankly, I wasn't expecting the call, but I answered all the questions honestly. Answer: the first искрено comments on the utterance; the second describes the answers.

Task 2: Match the evidence strength

Можда ће доћи; вероватно ће доћи; очигледно ће доћи.

He may come; he will probably come; it is evident that he will come. Answer: open possibility, likely assessment, evidence-based conclusion.

Common Mistakes

Using an agreeing adjective for clause stance

❌ Вероватан ће Маја стићи пре нас.

Incorrect — the whole proposition needs the invariable adverb вероватно.

✅ Вероватно ће Маја стићи пре нас.

Maja will probably arrive before us.

Forcing да after можда

❌ Можда да је Петар већ отишао кући.

Incorrect as a neutral factual possibility — можда combines directly with је отишао.

✅ Можда је Петар већ отишао кући.

Maybe Petar has already gone home.

Confusing report and skeptical pretense

❌ У неутралном извештају пише да је тобоже дошло до квара.

Incorrect for neutral source attribution — тобоже adds skeptical or mocking distance.

✅ У извештају пише да је наводно дошло до квара.

The report says that a malfunction allegedly occurred.

Doubling a contrast connector

❌ Хтели смо да останемо, али међутим последњи воз је полазио у десет.

Awkward in careful prose — али and међутим duplicate the same contrastive link.

✅ Хтели смо да останемо, али је последњи воз полазио у десет.

We wanted to stay, but the last train was leaving at ten.

Key Takeaways

  • Sentence adverbs express possibility, certainty, evidence, evaluation, or discourse relation.
  • Можда takes an ordinary finite clause; it does not require a special mood.
  • Scope separates Искрено, ... “frankly” from event-manner одговорити искрено.
  • Наводно reports at a distance; marked тобоже normally adds skepticism.
  • Placement changes information structure, while punctuation distinguishes integrated from parenthetical uses.
