Indirect and Rhetorical Questions

Interrogative form serves at least three different purposes. A direct question requests an answer; an embedded question makes the unresolved issue part of a larger statement; a rhetorical question presents an attitude or expected conclusion rather than neutrally requesting information. Compare Где је кључ?, Не знам где је кључ, and exasperated Како да знам где је кључ?

Serbian keeps the question word in embedded information questions and commonly uses да ли for embedded yes/no questions. It does not copy English subject–auxiliary inversion or automatic tense backshift.

Embedded information questions

Verbs and expressions such as питати, знати, не знати, проверити, сазнати, објаснити and занима ме can select a clause introduced by a question word.

Direct questionEmbedded question
Где ради Ивана?Не знам где Ивана ради.
Када полази воз?Провери када полази воз.
Коме су послали рачун?Питај коме су послали рачун.
Зашто касне?Занима ме зашто касне.

Можете ли да ми кажете где се преузимају акредитације?

Can you tell me where the badges are collected?

Још не знамо ко ће водити сутрашњи састанак.

We still don't know who will chair tomorrow's meeting.

Провери коме је рачуновођа послала коначну верзију.

Check who the accountant sent the final version to.

The embedded clause retains the case required internally: коме remains dative because it is the recipient of послала. It is not selected by matrix провери.

Embedded polar questions with да ли

When the unresolved issue is yes versus no, да ли is the neutral, broadly usable introducer. English alternates whether and if; Serbian does not use conditional ако as the ordinary embedded interrogative complement.

Питај Ану да ли долази на вечеру.

Ask Ana whether she's coming to dinner.

Не знам да ли је продавница још отворена.

I don't know whether the shop is still open.

Провери да ли су нам вратили депозит.

Check whether they have returned our deposit.

The matrix verb affects the speech act: питати reports a question, не знати reports unresolved knowledge, and проверити calls for verification. It does not change the embedded issue itself.

Ли also occurs in embedded questions after a finite verb, particularly in more compact or elevated styles: Не знам долази ли “I don't know whether he is coming.” This is standard and common in edited prose (formal/written), but its detailed placement belongs on the dedicated question-particle page. At B1, да ли is the safest productive frame.

Комисија ће утврдити постоји ли сукоб интереса.

The committee will determine whether a conflict of interest exists. (formal)

Each embedded clause has its own clitic domain

The matrix clause and embedded clause each organize their own clitics. After да ли, embedded clitics take their normal order; after an embedded wh-word, that word provides their first host.

Не знам где му је Јелена оставила документа.

I don't know where Jelena left the documents for him.

Провери да ли јој се лекар већ јавио.

Check whether the doctor has already contacted her.

In the first, му је belongs to где...оставила. In the second, јој се...јавио belongs inside the да ли question. Clitics do not simply join the first cluster anywhere in the sentence.

💡
Find the predicate that licenses each clitic. If јој is the recipient/experiencer of the embedded verb, place it in the embedded domain, not automatically beside the matrix verb.

No English-style inversion or automatic backshift

Serbian does not change Где је Марко? to an inverted special embedded order. It says Не знам где је Марко; је remains the copular clitic in its Serbian position.

Знаш ли где је Марко и када се враћа?

Do you know where Marko is and when he is coming back?

Serbian also lacks an automatic sequence-of-tenses rule requiring every present to move into the past after a past reporting verb. Present живи can remain present if the situation still holds.

Јуче ме је питала где живим.

Yesterday she asked me where I live.

If the time relation itself is past, Serbian chooses the appropriate past form because of meaning, not mechanical backshift:

Питала ме је где сам живео пре него што сам се преселио у Београд.

She asked me where I had lived before moving to Belgrade. (male speaker)

Indirect questions are not quotations

An embedded question is syntactically part of the surrounding sentence. It does not take quotation marks, and a declarative matrix clause ends with a full stop, not a question mark.

Рецепционерка је питала када стижемо.

The receptionist asked when we were arriving.

Direct quotation is different and preserves the quoted question and Serbian quotation marks:

Рецепционерка је питала: „Када стижете?“

The receptionist asked, ‘When are you arriving?’

Реторичка питања: form without an open request

A rhetorical question resembles a question but guides the listener toward an expected conclusion, protest, challenge, or evaluation. Context and intonation are essential.

Ко би одбио такву прилику?

Who would turn down an opportunity like that? (Expected answer: nobody.)

Како да завршим извештај ако немам све податке?

How am I supposed to finish the report if I don't have all the data?

Како да + present often conveys impossibility, lack of a reasonable means, or protest. It need not seek step-by-step instructions. The same words can be genuine in a practical context, so discourse determines force.

Како да ресетујем лозинку? — Кликните на везу испод формулара.

How do I reset the password? — Click the link below the form. (Genuine request for instructions.)

Како да ти верујем после свега што се догодило?

How am I supposed to trust you after everything that happened? (Rhetorical challenge.)

Зар and зар не mark expectation

Initial зар signals surprise or conflict with an expectation. Зар не commonly steers toward confirmation of a positive proposition.

Зар си заборавио да је данас празник?

Have you really forgotten that today is a holiday?

Зар није очигледно да нам недостаје један потпис?

Isn't it obvious that we're missing one signature?

The second does not neutrally ask whether the fact is obvious; the speaker presents “it is obvious” as the expected answer. Nevertheless, a listener can disagree. Rhetorical force is pragmatic pressure, not a special truth value.

Зар can also introduce a genuinely answerable question when the speaker is surprised: Зар сутра не радиш? may sincerely request correction. Do not label every зар question unanswerable.

💡
A neutral question opens alternatives. Зар announces that one alternative conflicts with the speaker's expectation; зар не often invites the listener to ratify the positive assumption.

Matched dialogue: wording versus force

Да ли Петар долази? — Не знам, проверићу.

Is Petar coming? — I don't know; I'll check. (Neutral information request.)

Зар Петар долази? — Да, управо ми је потврдио.

Petar is coming? — Yes, he just confirmed it. (Surprised request for confirmation.)

Зар Петар не долази сваког понедељка?

Doesn't Petar come every Monday? (The speaker expects that he does.)

The proposition stays nearly constant; да ли, зар, negation, and intonation change how answerable and expected each alternative is. Broader stance-particle patterns are treated separately.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Direct to embedded

Када се затвара шалтер? — Провери када се затвара шалтер.

When does the counter close? — Check when the counter closes. Answer: keep када, remove question punctuation, and embed the clause without English inversion.

Task 2: Neutral or rhetorical?

Да ли имамо други избор? — Зар стварно имамо други избор?

Do we have another choice? — Do we really have another choice? Answer: да ли is neutral; зар стварно signals disbelief and favors ‘no.’

Common Mistakes

Using ако for embedded “whether”

❌ Не знам ако банка ради суботом.

Incorrect for an unresolved yes/no issue—use да ли, not conditional ако.

✅ Не знам да ли банка ради суботом.

I don't know whether the bank is open on Saturdays.

Doubling a wh-word and да ли

❌ Питај где да ли можемо да паркирамо.

Incorrect—где already introduces the embedded information question.

✅ Питај где можемо да паркирамо.

Ask where we can park.

Copying English tense backshift

❌ Јуче ме је питала где сам живео, иако и даље живим овде.

Wrong for the intended current residence—the reporting verb does not automatically force a past tense.

✅ Прошле недеље су ме питали где радим.

Last week they asked me where I work.

Punctuating indirect speech as a quotation

❌ Питала је где је излаз?

Incorrect when the whole sentence is a statement reporting her question; it ends with a full stop.

✅ Питала је где је излаз.

She asked where the exit was.

Key Takeaways

  • Embedded information questions retain their wh-word; embedded polar questions commonly use да ли.
  • Serbian does not use conditional ако as neutral embedded whether/if.
  • Each embedded clause forms its own clitic-placement domain.
  • Tense follows the intended time relation, not automatic English-style backshift.
  • Зар, зар не, како да, and intonation can turn interrogative form into surprise, challenge, or an expected conclusion.
