Mistake: Wrong Case After Prepositions

English learners often choose a Serbian preposition from its translation and then leave the noun in a dictionary-like form. Serbian instead treats a preposition and its case as one construction: без + genitive, према + dative, кроз + accusative, с/са + instrumental, о + locative. With two-case spatial prepositions, the selected case also changes the relationship.

This clinic targets recurring errors. The goal is not to memorize isolated corrections, but to identify the governor, the intended relation, and every word that must agree inside the phrase.

Error 1: “Movement Means Accusative”

The tempting shortcut comes from learning у парк “to/into the park” beside у парку “in the park.” The real contrast is destination versus setting, not movement versus stillness.

❌ Сваког јутра трчимо у велики парк пола сата.

Wrong case for the intended location—the accusative phrase у велики парк presents the park as a destination, not as the area where the running happens.

✅ Сваког јутра трчимо у великом парку пола сата.

Every morning we run in the large park for half an hour.

The incorrect sentence is not meaningless. It can suggest that each morning “we run into/to the park for half an hour,” though the final duration makes that reading awkward. Locative у великом парку clearly makes the park the setting.

❌ После ручка идемо у новом музеју.

Incorrect—the museum is the destination of идемо, so у requires accusative, not locative.

✅ После ручка идемо у нови музеј код реке.

After lunch we're going to the new museum by the river.

Ask whether the noun names the endpoint being reached or the place inside which the action unfolds. The full system is on Two-Case Prepositions.

💡
A motion verb can take a location phrase, and a placement verb can create a destination. Diagnose the prepositional phrase, not the verb in isolation.

Error 2: Confusing Endpoint with Existing Position

Под, над, пред, за, међу contrast accusative endpoint with instrumental position. English often uses the same preposition in both.

❌ Стави кутију под слободном столицом.

Wrong case for the intended endpoint—instrumental под слободном столицом describes where an action occurs, not where the box is to be placed.

✅ Стави кутију под слободну столицу.

Put the box under the empty chair.

The ❌ string can be forced into a grammatical but different reading: someone located under the chair performs the placing. Accusative под слободну столицу unambiguously marks the new position of the box.

❌ Гости већ седе за велики сто поред прозора.

Wrong case for the intended existing position—за + accusative means movement to the table.

✅ Гости већ седе за великим столом поред прозора.

The guests are already sitting at the large table by the window.

Use accusative with сести за сто “sit down at the table,” but instrumental with седети за столом “be sitting at the table.”

Error 3: Translating English “From” One Way

English from hides several Serbian source relations. Use из + genitive from an interior, са + genitive off a surface or from a place normally used with на, and од + genitive away from a person, point, or source.

❌ Управо смо изашли од биоскопа и тражимо такси.

Incorrect for movement out of the cinema—од means away from its vicinity; an interior source requires из.

✅ Управо смо изашли из биоскопа и тражимо такси.

We have just come out of the cinema and are looking for a taxi.

Од биоскопа is grammatical in a route phrase such as од биоскопа до станице “from the cinema to the station,” where the building is a reference point. It does not encode emergence from inside.

❌ Вратила се из факултета око шест.

Incorrect for the conventional на-place факултет—source normally pairs на факултету with са факултета.

✅ Вратила се са факултета око шест.

She returned from university around six.

The pair is на факултет / на факултету / са факултета. Learn destination, location, and source together instead of translating three English prepositions separately.

Error 4: Treating Every са Phrase as Instrumental

Accompaniment с/са takes instrumental; source са takes genitive.

❌ Склонила је шољу са старим столом пре него што је ставила нови чаршав.

Wrong case for source—the intended meaning is ‘off the old table,’ which requires genitive.

✅ Склонила је шољу са старог стола пре него што је ставила нови чаршав.

She removed the mug from the old table before putting on the new tablecloth.

Instrumental са старим столом means “with the old table,” an accompaniment/association reading that does not fit the removal event. Compare:

Са старим комшијом сам сишао са крова пре кише.

I came down from the roof with my elderly neighbor before the rain. (male speaker)

Са старим комшијом is instrumental accompaniment; са крова is genitive source. The spelling of the preposition alone does not select the case.

Error 5: Guessing Fixed Government from English

Many prepositions simply govern one case, even when English suggests another relation.

❌ Упркос јаке кише, утакмица је настављена.

Incorrect—упркос governs dative, not genitive.

✅ Упркос јакој киши, утакмица је настављена.

Despite the heavy rain, the match continued.

English despite has no visible case requirement. Serbian lexical entry упркос + dative supplies јакој киши.

❌ Разговарали смо о нови распоред после састанка.

Incorrect—о in the topic meaning governs locative across the whole phrase.

✅ Разговарали смо о новом распореду после састанка.

We talked about the new schedule after the meeting.

Store common frames as units: без + G, због + G, према + D, упркос + D, кроз + A, с/са + I, о + L. The preposition overview provides the larger map.

Error 6: Declining Only the Noun

Case belongs to the whole phrase. Demonstratives, adjectives, possessives, and numerals must use compatible forms.

❌ Чекамо поред овај високи споменик.

Incorrect—поред governs genitive, so every agreeing word must be genitive.

✅ Чекамо поред овог високог споменика.

We're waiting beside this tall monument.

English leaves this tall unchanged. Serbian repeats the genitive information on овог, високог, споменика.

❌ Без моја нова картица не могу да подигнем новац.

Incorrect—без requires genitive across the feminine phrase.

✅ Без моје нове картице не могу да подигнем новац.

I can't withdraw money without my new card.

Do not repair only the last ending. Audit the phrase from determiner to noun.

Error 7: Putting Pronoun Clitics after Prepositions

Prepositions normally require full case forms, not the short object clitics used beside verbs.

❌ Између ми и ти нема никаквог неспоразума.

Incorrect—између requires full genitive pronouns, not clitic or nominative forms.

✅ Између мене и тебе нема никаквог неспоразума.

There is no misunderstanding between you and me.

Likewise: без њега, према њој, са нама, о вама. English pronouns change only slightly; Serbian prepositional forms carry explicit case.

Editing Diagnostic

For every prepositional phrase:

  1. Circle the preposition.
  2. State its meaning in this sentence—not merely its English gloss.
  3. Name the governed case.
  4. With a two-case preposition, choose endpoint/configuration or existing setting.
  5. Check every determiner, adjective, numeral, noun, and pronoun in the phrase.
  6. Read the rejected case once more: is it ungrammatical, or does it accidentally express another relation?
💡
The best correction explains the rejected form. If another case creates a grammatical reading, name that reading; learners then see that case is meaning, not decoration.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Same preposition, different case

Describe placing a backpack under a bench and then its position there. Use под + accusative first and под + instrumental second, with an agreeing adjective.

Task 2: Reconstruct three sources

Choose among из, са, од for leaving an office interior, returning from a concert, and receiving a message from a colleague. Give each complement in the genitive.

Common Mistakes

❌ Лампа виси над округли сто.

Incorrect—an existing position with над requires instrumental над округлим столом.

✅ Лампа виси над округлим столом.

The lamp hangs above the round table.

❌ Прошли смо кроз старом тунелу без заустављања.

Incorrect—кроз governs accusative, not locative.

✅ Прошли смо кроз стари тунел без заустављања.

We went through the old tunnel without stopping.

❌ Према главни улаз води уска стаза.

Incorrect—према governs dative across the phrase.

✅ Према главном улазу води уска стаза.

A narrow path leads toward the main entrance.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn a preposition together with its governed case and meaning.
  • With two-case spatial prepositions, choose endpoint or existing position—not simply movement or rest.
  • Once the case is selected, apply it to the whole phrase, including full pronouns and every agreeing modifier.

Self-editing Checklist

  • Did I learn the preposition together with its case?
  • For у/на, did I distinguish destination from location?
  • For под/над/пред/за/међу, did I distinguish a new endpoint from an existing position?
  • Did I choose из/са/од from the source relation rather than English from?
  • Does every agreeing word carry the selected case?
  • After a preposition, did I use a full pronoun form?
