English adjectives do not agree, and English past-tense verbs do not reveal the speaker's gender. Serbian does both. A noun's grammatical gender controls demonstratives, possessives, adjectives, and—where an l-participle is used—past or conditional agreement. The most persistent errors come from guessing gender by the final letter and then correcting only one word.
This clinic treats agreement as a chain. First identify the controller; then copy its gender, number, and case across every agreeing form.
Error 1: Treating Every Consonant-Final Noun as Masculine
Most consonant-final nouns are masculine, but frequent feminine -i-declension nouns include ноћ, ствар, реч, љубав, радост, помоћ, вест. Their modifiers and predicates are feminine.
❌ Овај вест је био веома важан за цео тим.
Incorrect—вест is feminine despite ending in a consonant; the demonstrative, auxiliary participle, and predicate adjective must be feminine.
✅ Ова вест је била веома важна за цео тим.
This news item was very important for the whole team.
English this news was important gives no agreement clue. Serbian repeats feminine singular on ова, била, важна.
❌ Дуг ноћ нас је све исцрпео.
Incorrect—ноћ is feminine, so both the adjective and past participle require feminine forms.
✅ Дуга ноћ нас је све исцрпела.
The long night exhausted all of us.
The corrected subject дуга ноћ controls исцрпела. Object clitic нас does not influence agreement.
Error 2: Treating Every -а Noun as Feminine
Names and human nouns such as Никола, Лука, колега, судија, тата can be masculine although they follow an -а declension pattern.
❌ Наша нова колега је стигла последња на састанак.
Incorrect for a male colleague—колега takes masculine agreement even though its noun ending resembles a feminine noun.
✅ Наш нови колега је стигао последњи на састанак.
Our new male colleague arrived last at the meeting.
The error is tempting because колега declines like many feminine -а nouns. Declension class and agreement gender are related but not identical.
With profession nouns such as судија, natural gender can determine the predicate:
Судија Јелена Петровић је стигла раније и одмах отворила претрес.
Judge Jelena Petrović arrived earlier and immediately opened the hearing.
Here the personal name makes the referent explicit, while feminine стигла and отворила carry the agreement. In ordinary context, Судија је стигла identifies a female judge through agreement; for a male judge, use Судија је стигао. Avoid mechanically attaching женски to a profession title when the name or context already makes the referent clear.
Error 3: Forgetting the Speaker's Gender in the Past
The Serbian perfect uses an l-participle that agrees with the subject. First-person сам does not itself show gender.
❌ Јуче сам стигао касно јер је воз био отказан.
Incorrect if the speaker is a woman—стигао marks a male speaker.
✅ Јуче сам стигла касно јер је воз био отказан.
Yesterday I arrived late because the train was canceled. (female speaker)
The ❌ sentence is fully grammatical when spoken by a man. It is an agreement error only in the stated female-speaker context. This is why correction must name the intended controller rather than label a form universally impossible.
❌ Милица је прочитао поруку, али није одговорио.
Incorrect—both l-participles must agree with feminine subject Милица.
✅ Милица је прочитала поруку, али није одговорила.
Milica read the message but did not reply.
English read/did not reply never changes for gender, so learners often leave the memorized masculine citation form in place.
Error 4: Agreeing with the Object or Nearest Noun
The nominative subject controls predicate agreement, not the closest noun and not the direct object.
❌ Ана је купио нови рачунар јуче поподне.
Incorrect—masculine object рачунар does not control the participle; feminine subject Ана requires купила.
✅ Ана је купила нови рачунар јуче поподне.
Ana bought a new computer yesterday afternoon.
Case keeps the relation clear even if the object is fronted:
❌ Новог клијента је позвао Марија после ручка.
Incorrect—accusative новог клијента is the object; nominative Марија controls feminine позвала.
✅ Новог клијента је позвала Марија после ручка.
It was Marija who called the new client after lunch.
Likewise, an embedded genitive plural does not control the verb:
❌ Група туриста су чекали испред хотела.
Nonneutral for the intended grammatical-agreement reading—feminine singular head група controls је чекала, not plural genitive туриста.
✅ Група туриста је чекала испред хотела.
A group of tourists was waiting outside the hotel.
Semantic plural agreement can occur with some collectives, but the clean A2 editorial pattern follows the singular head. See Predicate Agreement Subtleties before judging real corpus variants.
Error 5: Changing the Noun but Not Its Modifiers
Agreement spans the entire noun phrase. If a preposition or syntactic role changes case, demonstratives and adjectives change with the noun.
❌ Разговарали смо са ова занимљива ауторка после промоције.
Incorrect—са requires instrumental across the feminine phrase.
✅ Разговарали смо са овом занимљивом ауторком после промоције.
We spoke with this interesting author after the book launch.
English with this interesting author leaves every modifier unchanged. Serbian repeats feminine instrumental on овом, занимљивом, ауторком.
❌ Купио је поклон за свој млађа сестра.
Incorrect—за in this recipient/purpose phrase takes accusative, so feminine свој млађа сестра must become своју млађу сестру.
✅ Купио је поклон за своју млађу сестру.
He bought a present for his younger sister.
Do not choose adjective endings from gender alone; case and number participate in the same chain.
Error 6: Reading -а as Feminine Everywhere
The ending -а has several jobs. It can mark feminine singular, neuter plural, or the special plural agreement of деца.
❌ Нова села су биле мирне током зиме.
Incorrect—села is neuter plural, so the participle and adjective must use neuter plural -а forms.
✅ Нова села су била мирна током зиме.
The new villages were quiet during the winter.
❌ Деца је била гладна после тренинга.
Incorrect—деца takes plural auxiliary су with neuter plural predicate forms.
✅ Деца су била гладна после тренинга.
The children were hungry after training.
Деца is not feminine singular simply because it ends in -а. Its conventional agreement pattern must be learned as a unit.
Error 7: Ignoring Animacy in Masculine Accusative
For masculine singular nouns, an animate direct object uses genitive-like agreement; an inanimate object uses nominative-like forms.
❌ На станици сам видео твој нови професор.
Incorrect—the animate masculine object requires accusative твог новог професора.
✅ На станици сам видео твог новог професора.
I saw your new professor at the station. (male speaker)
Compare inanimate видео сам твој нови рачунар. The difference is animacy, not definiteness or word order.
Agreement Diagnostic
- Find the head noun or nominative subject.
- Record its grammatical gender and number; for human profession nouns, check the actual referent where usage permits natural-gender agreement.
- Identify case for every noun phrase.
- Copy gender, number, and case across demonstratives, possessives, adjectives, participles, and predicate adjectives.
- For a masculine singular direct object, apply the animacy split.
- If the subject is quantified, collective, coordinated, or plural-only, consult its dedicated agreement pattern rather than choosing the nearest ending.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Change the speaker
Write “I arrived tired and immediately fell asleep” for a male speaker and a female speaker. Change both agreeing l-participles or adjectives, not only the first form.
Task 2: Audit a full phrase
Put ова занимљива књига after о and then after destination за. Mark gender, number, and case on all three words.
Common Mistakes
❌ Моја брат је донела стару фотографију.
Incorrect—брат is masculine, requiring мој and донео.
✅ Мој брат је донео стару фотографију.
My brother brought an old photograph.
❌ Ово писмо је била кратка, али важна.
Incorrect—neuter писмо requires било кратко, али важно.
✅ Ово писмо је било кратко, али важно.
This letter was short but important.
❌ Две искусна преводитељке су стигли прве.
Incorrect—два/две phrase agreement and the participle must be feminine plural here.
✅ Две искусне преводитељке су стигле прве.
Two experienced translators arrived first.
Key Takeaways
- Determine a noun's grammatical gender from the lexeme, not from its last letter alone.
- Find the actual agreement controller before changing modifiers or l-participles.
- Audit gender, number, and case as one agreement chain, including masculine accusative animacy.
Self-editing Checklist
- Did I confirm gender instead of guessing only from the final letter?
- Does every modifier match the noun in gender, number, and case?
- Does each l-participle agree with the subject, including the speaker?
- Did I accidentally agree with a nearby object or genitive modifier?
- Is -а feminine singular, neuter plural, or part of a special pattern here?
- For masculine accusative singular, is the referent animate?
