English tense often leaves completion to context; Serbian usually makes the speaker choose an aspectual viewpoint. Imperfective opens a process, habit, background, or manner. Perfective presents a relevant boundary, transition, or attained result. The hardest errors arise when a useful beginner tendency—“habits are imperfective,” “commands are perfective”—is turned into an absolute rule. Review the system behind those choices on the aspect overview page.
This clinic diagnoses what the wrong member accidentally claims. It assumes that the verbs are genuine partners; choosing the wrong lexical relative is treated separately.
Error 1: Using Perfective Present for an Event Happening Now
A perfective present form normally cannot report one ongoing event at speech time. It receives future, modal, conditional, or repeated-bounded interpretation.
❌ Сада прочитам поруку, па не могу да разговарам.
Incorrect for an action in progress now—perfective прочитам cannot mean ‘I am reading through it at this moment.’
✅ Сада читам поруку, па не могу да разговарам.
I'm reading a message now, so I can't talk.
Perfective прочитам is natural in another frame:
Кад прочитам поруку до краја, позваћу те.
When I finish reading the message, I'll call you.
The form was not meaningless; the adverb сада and intended ongoing viewpoint were incompatible with it.
Error 2: Using Imperfective Past When Completion Is the Point
English I read the report can report either activity or completion. Serbian distinguishes them.
❌ До подне сам читао цео извештај и послао коначне примедбе.
Wrong viewpoint for the intended completed reading—читао does not itself assert reaching the end of the entire report.
✅ До подне сам прочитао цео извештај и послао коначне примедбе.
By noon I had read the whole report and sent my final comments. (male speaker)
The imperfective version could be grammatical if it meant “I spent the time up to noon reading the entire report as an activity,” but the sequence with final comments strongly requires completed access to the whole text.
The opposite error is to use perfective when only activity is asserted:
❌ Поправио сам бицикл два сата, али још не ради.
Wrong viewpoint for two hours of unsuccessful work—поправио asserts a successful repair result.
✅ Поправљао сам бицикл два сата, али још не ради.
I worked on the bicycle for two hours, but it still doesn't work. (male speaker)
Imperfective поправљао reports genuine effort without promising success.
Error 3: Letting a Time Phrase Choose Mechanically
Bare duration often measures time inside an imperfective event; за + duration often measures time to a perfective boundary. They are cues, not conjugation rules.
❌ Написала је записник три сата и није стигла до закључка.
Wrong viewpoint—the perfective verb asserts a completed document, which conflicts with not reaching the conclusion.
✅ Писала је записник три сата и није стигла до закључка.
She worked on the minutes for three hours and did not reach the conclusion.
❌ Писала је коначни записник за четрдесет минута и одмах га послала.
Wrong viewpoint for the intended time-to-completion reading—за четрдесет минута and immediate sending make the completed result relevant.
✅ Написала је коначни записник за четрдесет минута и одмах га послала.
She completed the final minutes in forty minutes and sent them immediately.
Yet за викенд сам читао can mean “I read during the weekend” in a different construction, and коначно сам спавао can remain imperfective. Interpret the whole phrase.
Error 4: Assuming Every Repetition Must Be Imperfective
An open habit favors imperfective:
Сваког петка шаљемо извештај централи.
Every Friday we send a report to headquarters.
But a recurring frame can distribute a complete perfective event over each occasion.
❌ Кад год завршава извештај, сачува једну копију на серверу.
Wrong aspect for the intended completed trigger—завршава presents the finishing process rather than each attained endpoint.
✅ Кад год заврши извештај, сачува једну копију на серверу.
Whenever she finishes a report, she saves one copy on the server.
Both perfectives are repeated because кад год creates many bounded occasions. Repetition and boundedness are compatible.
The reverse also matters:
❌ Сваког јутра прочита вести уз прву кафу.
Marked for the intended open routine—perfective прочита packages each reading as a completed whole rather than simply naming the daily activity.
✅ Сваког јутра чита вести уз прву кафу.
Every morning she reads the news with her first coffee.
The ❌ form can become natural if each completion matters: Сваког јутра прочита по три чланка.
Error 5: Treating All Affirmative Commands as Perfective
Perfective imperatives commonly request one result; imperfective imperatives regulate an activity, manner, duration, or repetition.
❌ Прочитај спорије док остали записују бројеве.
Marked for the intended regulation of an activity already under way—perfective прочитај packages one completed reading.
✅ Читај спорије док остали записују бројеве.
Read more slowly while the others write down the figures.
For a result, perfective is exactly right:
Прочитај последњи пасус пре него што потпишеш изјаву.
Read the final paragraph through before you sign the statement.
Politeness is separate. Прочитајте is formal/plural; прочитај is familiar singular. Aspect itself does not encode respect.
Error 6: Banning Perfective Negative Commands
Imperfective negative imperatives often prohibit an activity or habit. Perfective negatives are natural warnings against one unwanted result.
❌ Не заборављај сутрашњи преглед код лекара.
Wrong viewpoint for one specific preventive reminder—imperfective sounds like a general complaint about habitual forgetting.
✅ Не заборави сутрашњи преглед код лекара.
Don't forget tomorrow's appointment with the doctor.
Conversely, use imperfective for a general prohibition:
❌ Немој да пошаљеш лозинке обичном електронском поштом.
Marked for a general security rule—perfective presents one prevented sending rather than a standing prohibition.
✅ Немој да шаљеш лозинке обичном електронском поштом.
Do not send passwords by ordinary email.
The perfective sentence is grammatical if one specific message is at issue: Немој да пошаљеш лозинку на стару адресу.
Error 7: Putting a Perfective Result after a Phase Verb
Почети, наставити, престати select access to an activity's internal phase, so their verbal complement is normally imperfective.
❌ После паузе смо наставили да завршимо превод.
Incorrect for continuing the activity—perfective завршимо presents its endpoint instead of the process being resumed.
✅ После паузе смо наставили да преводимо последње поглавље.
After the break we continued translating the last chapter.
If completion is the next new event, coordinate it separately: Наставили смо да преводимо и коначно смо завршили рукопис.
Error 8: Choosing a Prefix Only Because the Event Is Complete
Prefixes can change lexical meaning. Потписати means “sign,” not “finish writing”; преписати means “copy/transcribe.”
❌ Аутор је потписао ново поглавље за два дана.
Wrong verb for ‘wrote the chapter’—потписати means ‘sign,’ not complete writing.
✅ Аутор је написао ново поглавље за два дана.
The author wrote a new chapter in two days.
This is a lexical error before it is an aspect error. Verify the pair in a dictionary rather than treating every prefix as a completion switch.
Editing Diagnostic
- Verify that the two verbs name the same event.
- Ask whether the clause views process/habit/background/manner or boundary/result.
- In actual present-time narration, reject a perfective form for one unfolding event.
- In the past, decide what the sentence commits to—not which English tense it resembles.
- For repetition, distinguish an open routine from a bounded event on each occasion.
- For commands, separate activity regulation from one requested or prevented result.
- After phase verbs, choose an imperfective activity complement.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Repair a short narrative
Write one imperfective background activity, one perfective interruption, and one completed result. Explain what each clause includes or leaves open.
Task 2: Give two negative commands
Prohibit a general habit with imperfective, then warn against one mishap with perfective. Keep address level constant so aspect is the only relevant contrast.
Common Mistakes
❌ Свршени глагол увек означава кратку радњу.
Incorrect rule—a long project can be perfective when presented as one completed whole.
✅ После дванаест година су коначно изградили болницу.
After twelve years they finally completed the hospital.
❌ Несвршени глагол доказује да радња није успела.
Incorrect inference—imperfective leaves the endpoint outside its assertion but does not deny success.
✅ Кувала је ручак цело преподне, а гости су све појели.
She cooked lunch all morning, and the guests ate everything.
❌ Императив свршеног вида је аутоматски учтивији.
Incorrect—politeness comes from address form, softeners, tone, and context, not aspect alone.
✅ Сачекајте само минут испред сале, молим вас.
Please wait just a minute outside the hall. (formal or plural)
Key Takeaways
- Choose the lexical verb first, then decide whether to open its process or present a relevant boundary.
- Tense, duration, repetition, negation, and politeness are clues, never mechanical aspect rules.
- A rejected aspectual form often becomes natural when the context supplies a different viewpoint.
Self-editing Checklist
- Did I choose the lexical verb before choosing its aspect?
- Does the sentence view an internal process or a relevant boundary?
- Is a present perfective receiving an appropriate future, modal, or repeated reading?
- Does repetition describe a habit or distribute completed units?
- Does the imperative regulate an activity or request/prevent one result?
- Does any time expression merely suggest, rather than mechanically dictate, the aspect?
