Serbian and English share many international-looking words, but resemblance is not a promise of equal meaning. English also tempts learners to translate whole expressions word by word: the result may be impossible Serbian, or it may be perfectly Serbian with an unintended meaning. This clinic separates total false friends, partial false friends, and structural calques, then gives you a way to catch them while editing.
First Ask: Wrong Word, or Wrong Meaning?
A total false friend points to a different thing: фабрика is a factory, not fabric. A partial false friend overlaps with English only in limited contexts: Serbian аргумент is a reason in support of a claim, while English argument can also mean a quarrel. A calque uses ordinary Serbian words in an English combination that Serbian does not normally choose.
актуелан Is Current, Not Normally Actual
In contemporary neutral Serbian, актуелан most often means “current,” “topical,” or “presently relevant.” English actually is normally заправо or у ствари; English actual in the sense “real” is normally стваран. This is a lexical error, not an aspect or tense problem.
❌ Актуелно, нисам очекивао да ће комисија прихватити наш предлог.
Incorrect for ‘actually’—актуелно means ‘currently/topically,’ not ‘in fact.’ (male speaker)
✅ Заправо, нисам очекивао да ће комисија прихватити наш предлог.
Actually, I did not expect the committee to accept our proposal. (male speaker)
The genuine Serbian use is straightforward:
Недостатак станова је и даље актуелна тема у већим градовима.
The housing shortage is still a current issue in larger cities.
евентуално Means Possibly, Not Eventually
Serbian евентуално presents something as a possibility: “possibly,” “perhaps,” or “if necessary.” It does not describe the final point of a long process. For English eventually, choose на крају, напослетку (formal/literary), or a clause that names the eventual result.
❌ Евентуално смо стигли до планинарског дома тек после поноћи.
Incorrect for ‘eventually’—евентуално expresses possibility, not the final outcome of a delay.
✅ На крају смо стигли до планинарског дома тек после поноћи.
Eventually, we reached the mountain lodge after midnight.
Евентуално можемо да померимо састанак за петак, али прво питај остале.
We could possibly move the meeting to Friday, but ask the others first.
Friendly Is Not the Same as Compassionate
симпатичан describes someone or something as likable, pleasant, appealing, or cute, depending on context. English sympathetic often means understanding another person's suffering; that is саосећајан. The false friend can therefore change the social judgment you make.
❌ Социјална радница је била веома симпатична према породици после пожара.
Wrong word for ‘compassionate’—симпатична describes the worker as likable rather than emphasizing empathy.
✅ Социјална радница је била веома саосећајна према породици после пожара.
The social worker was very compassionate toward the family after the fire.
Нова комшиница је баш симпатична; одмах нам је понудила помоћ.
The new neighbor is really nice; she immediately offered to help us. (informal)
Similarly, сензибилан means sensitive, perceptive, or responsive to nuances, often in (formal) prose. It does not normally mean English sensible, for which разуман, паметан, or практичан fits the intended sense.
❌ С обзиром на скроман породични буџет, то је сензибилан план.
Wrong word for ‘sensible’—сензибилан means sensitive or perceptive, not prudent.
✅ С обзиром на скроман породични буџет, то је разуман план.
Given the modest household budget, that is a sensible plan.
Familiar-Looking Nouns Can Create Comic or Temporal Misreadings
Several international-looking nouns name entirely different things. These are not stylistic preferences; the wrong choice changes the referent.
| Serbian word | Core Serbian meaning | Use instead for the English look-alike |
|---|---|---|
| фабрика | factory | fabric → тканина, материјал |
| декада | traditionally a ten-day period; “ten years” also occurs in contemporary use | unambiguous decade → деценија |
| презерватив | condom | preservative → конзерванс |
❌ Ова фабрика је превише груба за летњу кошуљу.
Incorrect—фабрика means a factory, not fabric.
✅ Ова тканина је превише груба за летњу кошуљу.
This fabric is too rough for a summer shirt.
Моји родитељи су живели у Зајечару скоро три декаде.
My parents lived in Zaječar for almost three decades. Here декаде has the increasingly attested ten-year sense, but the wording can remain ambiguous in careful Serbian.
Моји родитељи су живели у Зајечару скоро три деценије.
My parents lived in Zaječar for almost three decades. Деценије is the unambiguous neutral choice for ten-year periods.
For editing, prefer деценија when “ten years” is intended. Do not, however, label every contemporary ten-year use of декада meaningless or ungrammatical: the English-influenced sense is established enough to be understood and recorded, even though декада retains its traditional ten-day use.
Прва декада марта била је необично топла, а затим је пао снег.
The first ten days of March were unusually warm, and then it snowed.
❌ На етикети пише да намаз не садржи вештачке презервативе.
Incorrect—and potentially embarrassing—презерватив means ‘condom,’ not ‘preservative.’
✅ На етикети пише да намаз не садржи вештачке конзервансе.
The label says that the spread contains no artificial preservatives.
аргумент Is a Reason, Not Every Argument
Serbian аргумент is evidence or a reason offered for a conclusion. A heated interpersonal argument is usually свађа; a discussion or dispute can be расправа. English uses one noun across these situations, while Serbian lexicalizes the distinction.
❌ После жестоког аргумента о новцу, браћа нису разговарала недељу дана.
Wrong noun for a quarrel—аргумент is a reason supporting a claim.
✅ После жестоке свађе око новца, браћа нису разговарала недељу дана.
After a fierce quarrel about money, the brothers did not speak for a week.
Њен главни аргумент заснива се на подацима из последњег пописа.
Her main argument is based on data from the latest census. (formal/academic)
English Verb–Noun Packages Do Not Travel Intact
Calques often preserve the English verb while translating its noun. Serbian may prefer another support verb, a simple verb, or a different case frame.
English make a decision corresponds to донети одлуку, literally “bring a decision.” Направити одлуку is understandable but nonstandard and conspicuously translated. The правити and направити reference explains where Serbian really does use those verbs for making and producing.
❌ Управни одбор је направио одлуку без консултација са запосленима.
Nonstandard English calque—Serbian says донети одлуку, not направити одлуку.
✅ Управни одбор је донео одлуку без консултација са запосленима.
The management board made the decision without consulting the employees.
English take a photo is usually фотографисати or снимити фотографију. Узети фотографију is grammatical, but it means physically taking a photograph from somewhere or someone.
❌ Туристкиња је узела фотографију моста телефоном пре поласка.
Wrong for taking a picture—узела фотографију means she took possession of a photograph.
✅ Туристкиња је фотографисала мост телефоном пре поласка.
The tourist photographed the bridge with her phone before leaving.
English Frames Also Mislead
Neutral conversational age statements normally use имати “have” plus an age phrase: једну годину, две/три/четири године, пет и више година. Serbian also has the grammatical frame бити + стар/стара/старо + age phrase, especially when age is being characterized explicitly. The transfer error is therefore not every use of бити, but the word-for-word English order with the age phrase before стар.
❌ Моја нећака је осам година стара и већ сама чита романе.
Unnatural neutral age statement copied from English ‘is eight years old.’
✅ Моја нећака има осам година и већ сама чита романе.
My niece is eight years old and already reads novels by herself.
Моја нећака је стара осам година.
My niece is eight years old. This copular order is also grammatical; it presents her age more explicitly than the neutral има frame.
English interested in also invites the wrong preposition. Use заинтересован за + accusative or the impersonal-looking experiencer frame занима + accusative person.
❌ Заинтересован сам у савремену српску архитектуру.
Incorrect English preposition transfer—заинтересован requires за plus the accusative.
✅ Заинтересован сам за савремену српску архитектуру.
I'm interested in contemporary Serbian architecture. (male speaker)
A Four-Step Editing Diagnostic
- Circle every international-looking word and every phrase translated as one English unit.
- Ask what the Serbian expression literally claims. Does узети mean possession here? Does евентуално introduce a possibility?
- Check the whole construction: its partner verb, preposition, and case. A correct noun inside the wrong collocation is still an error.
- Read the sentence without the English original. If it now conveys a different object, time relation, or social judgment, replace the calque rather than merely adjusting an ending.
Practice
Task 1: Diagnose Before Correcting
For each sentence, label the problem total false friend, partial false friend, or structural calque, then rewrite it and explain the accidental Serbian meaning.
❌ Евентуално су нашли излаз из напуштеног рудника.
Intended: ‘Eventually they found the exit from the abandoned mine.’ Diagnose and correct the false friend.
❌ За овај стан, то је сензибилно решење.
Intended: ‘For this apartment, that is a sensible solution.’ Diagnose and correct the false friend.
❌ Узели смо фотографију трга пре него што је почела киша.
Intended: ‘We photographed the square before it started raining.’ Diagnose and correct the calque.
Task 2: Translate Without Mirroring English
Translate naturally: “Actually, we made the decision after a long argument”; “This fabric has no artificial preservatives”; “My cousin is twelve and is interested in astronomy.” Then underline the Serbian words or frames that could not be copied from English.
Common Mistakes
Treating Every Cognate as a Total False Friend
Some words have a legitimate overlapping use. Do not replace аргумент when the meaning really is a reason offered in debate.
❌ У научном чланку сваки аргумент морам да заменим речју „свађа“.
Incorrect rule—аргумент is exactly right for a reason or line of reasoning in an academic article.
✅ У научном чланку сваки аргумент мора бити поткрепљен изворима.
In an academic article, every argument must be supported by sources. (academic)
Correcting Only the Noun, Not Its Frame
❌ Заинтересована је у нову изложбу у Народном музеју.
Incorrect—the adjective still carries the English preposition; use за plus accusative.
✅ Заинтересована је за нову изложбу у Народном музеју.
She is interested in the new exhibition at the National Museum.
Assuming a Literal Phrase Is Meaningless
❌ Узео сам фотографију са стола значи да сам је снимио.
Incorrect interpretation—this says that I physically took the photograph from the table.
✅ Узео сам фотографију са стола и ставио је у стару фасциклу.
I took the photograph from the table and put it in an old folder. (male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Verify an international-looking word's Serbian meaning instead of trusting its English shape.
- Translate collocations and complement frames as units, not as strings of separate words.
- When a calque is possible Serbian, identify its accidental meaning before correcting it.
Self-Editing Checklist
- Did an international-looking word acquire its verified Serbian meaning rather than its English appearance?
- Did you check partial false friends in context, especially актуелан, евентуално, симпатичан, and аргумент?
- Did you translate the whole collocation instead of copying the English support verb?
- Did you check the Serbian preposition and case independently of English?
- If the original Serbian is possible, can you state its accidental meaning before replacing it?
