Preposition Pitfalls for English Speakers

Most preposition errors made by English speakers are not random case errors. They begin one step earlier: the learner chooses a Serbian preposition by translating English in, on, at, to, for, or with, then tries to add a case. Serbian instead chooses a relation plus a case frame.

The cure is to store constructions in pairs and networks: у/из, на/са, код/од; у + accusative destination versus у + locative location; с/са + instrumental accompaniment versus bare instrumental means.

Before declining anything, name the relation: destination, location, source, companion, means, cause, purpose, or topic. Then retrieve the whole Serbian frame.

Pitfall 1: “movement means accusative”

With у and на, accusative marks a destination; locative marks the setting. A motion verb can still take locative if the movement unfolds inside that setting.

Трчала је у парку док је њен брат трчао у оближњу продавницу по воду.

She was running in the park while her brother ran into a nearby shop to get water.

У парку is locative because the park contains the running. У продавницу is accusative because the shop is the endpoint entered.

Деца су се играла на игралишту, а затим су истрчала на улицу.

The children were playing on the playground, and then they ran out into the street.

The place conventionally selects на in both clauses; case supplies the location–destination contrast. Do not choose у or на from physical geometry alone. Serbian says у школу, у биоскоп, but на факултет, на концерт, на посао. Learn each common place with its round trip.

Pitfall 2: one English “from,” three Serbian sources

Serbian source prepositions reverse common destination/location pairings:

Destination/location familySourceExample pair
уиз + genitiveу банку — из банке
наса + genitiveна пијацу — са пијаце
кодод + genitiveкод зубара — од зубара

Свратићу у банку, па ћу из банке отићи право код зубара.

I'll stop by the bank, then go straight from the bank to the dentist's.

Вратила се са пијаце с две пуне торбе поврћа.

She came back from the market with two full bags of vegetables.

The two instances of с/са in the second sentence have different government: са пијаце is genitive source; с торбама is instrumental accompaniment. The visible ending and the semantic relation identify the construction.

Pitfall 3: accompaniment is not means

С/са + instrumental adds a companion or associated participant. A tool, vehicle, or means is normally a bare instrumental, without с/са.

На посао идем аутобусом, али се кући враћам с колегиницом.

I go to work by bus, but I return home with a colleague.

Отворила је пакет маказама и поделила садржај са осталим члановима тима.

She opened the package with scissors and shared the contents with the other team members.

English uses with in both meanings. Serbian distinguishes маказама as an instrument from са члановима as associated people. The full instrumental system is explained on means and accompaniment.

Pitfall 4: код is not a universal “at”

Код + genitive places someone at a person's home, office, business, or professional appointment, and can mean “near” in suitable spatial contexts. It does not replace ordinary у/на + locative.

Јелена је код лекара, а њен супруг је чека у кафићу преко пута ординације.

Jelena is at the doctor's, while her husband is waiting for her in the café across from the surgery.

Ноћас спавамо код пријатеља који живе у центру Новог Сада.

Tonight we're sleeping at friends' place; they live in central Novi Sad.

English at the office may be у канцеларији when the room is the setting, на послу when work is the institutional activity, or код директора when someone is with/in the office of the director. The intended relation chooses the phrase.

Pitfall 5: к/ка, према, and до do different jobs

All three may appear near English to/toward, but they structure the endpoint differently. К/ка + dative marks approach toward a goal and is less common than a plain destination phrase in many everyday contexts. Према + dative marks orientation. До + genitive marks a limit reached up to, not entry into the place.

Пришао је прозору, окренуо се према улици и повукао завесу.

He approached the window, turned toward the street, and drew the curtain.

Here прићи itself governs dative прозору; према улици expresses orientation. Adding к to every English to would be unnatural.

Аутобус иде до железничке станице, али не улази у станични комплекс.

The bus goes as far as the railway station, but does not enter the station complex.

До станице presents the station as a boundary. У комплекс presents an entered destination.

Pitfall 6: English “for” splits several ways

English for can mark beneficiary, duration, purpose, exchange, cause, or a scheduled span. Serbian distributes these meanings across different constructions.

MeaningSerbianModel
beneficiary/intended recipientза + accusativeпоклон за сестру
durationbare accusativeчекати цео сат
planned spanна + accusativeотићи на недељу дана
purposeради + genitive (formal) / purpose clauseради провере
cause or reasonзбог + genitiveкаснити због гужве
price/exchangeза + accusativeкупити за сто евра

Купили смо поклон за домаћина за три хиљаде динара.

We bought a gift for the host for three thousand dinars.

The first за marks intended recipient; the second marks price. The same preposition can form separate semantic constructions, while duration needs no preposition at all.

Pitfall 7: по changes meaning with case

По + locative can mean movement over an area, distribution, basis, or sequence: по граду, по азбучном реду, по завршетку. По + accusative occurs in the fetching-goal construction ићи по нешто and in distributive phrases such as по једну карту “one ticket each.”

Шетали смо по старом делу града, па смо отишли по две карте за вечерњу представу.

We walked around the old part of town, then went to get two tickets each for the evening performance.

The surface form по does not determine one case. Its construction does.

Pitfall 8: fixed multiword prepositions have internal government

Frames such as у вези са + instrumental, у складу са + instrumental, с обзиром на + accusative, and на основу + genitive behave as units.

У вези са вашим захтевом, одлука ће бити донета на основу приложене документације.

Regarding your request, the decision will be made on the basis of the attached documentation. (formal)

Do not shorten these frames by analogy with English. Their case government belongs to the Serbian expression.

Round-trip learning prevents several errors at once: у музеј — у музеју — из музеја and на изложбу — на изложби — са изложбе encode destination, location, and source as a set.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Rebuild two round trips

Identify destination, location, and source.

Ушла је у архив, радила у архиву два сата и изашла из архива са старом мапом.

She entered the archive, worked in the archive for two hours, and came out of the archive with an old map. Answer: у + accusative, у + locative, из + genitive; са + instrumental adds the accompanying object.

Отишли су на изложбу, срели се на изложби и вратили се са изложбе после девет.

They went to the exhibition, met at the exhibition, and returned from the exhibition after nine. Answer: на + accusative, на + locative, са + genitive.

Task 2: Companion or means?

Допутовала је возом с двоје колега и до хотела отишла таксијем.

She arrived by train with two colleagues and went to the hotel by taxi. Answer: bare instrumentals возом and таксијем mark means; с + instrumental marks companions.

Common Mistakes

Choosing accusative merely because someone moves

❌ Цео сат смо шетали у шуму.

Incorrect for walking within the forest — accusative makes the forest a destination.

✅ Цео сат смо шетали у шуми.

We walked in the forest for a whole hour.

Translating every “from” with од

❌ Узела је капут од ормара и пожурила напоље.

Incorrect — removal from an interior requires из + genitive.

✅ Узела је капут из ормара и пожурила напоље.

She took her coat from the wardrobe and hurried outside.

Adding са before a means

❌ Стигли смо са последњим воз нешто после поноћи.

Incorrect — са cannot be followed by the undeclined noun here, and a vehicle used as means normally takes bare instrumental.

✅ Стигли смо последњим возом нешто после поноћи.

We arrived on the last train shortly after midnight.

Using код for every English “at”

❌ Сачекај ме код главној станици.

Incorrect — код requires genitive, and ordinary location at the station is normally на + locative.

✅ Сачекај ме на главној станици.

Wait for me at the main station.

Leaving part of the phrase undeclined

❌ Разговарали смо о овај сложен проблем.

Incorrect — о governs locative on every agreeing word.

✅ Разговарали смо о овом сложеном проблему.

We discussed this complex problem.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose a relation first and a case-governed Serbian construction second.
  • Destination versus setting controls у/на + accusative versus locative, not the mere presence of motion.
  • Learn source as a round trip: у/из, на/са, код/од.
  • С/са + instrumental marks accompaniment; bare instrumental commonly marks means.
  • English at, to, from, with, and for each split across several Serbian frames.
