At B2, preposition errors are rarely just “forgot the ending.” The chosen preposition and case jointly construe a relationship: destination versus stable configuration, origin inside versus origin at an activity, companion versus means, endpoint versus orientation. A sentence with the “wrong” combination may therefore be ungrammatical—or perfectly grammatical with a different scene.
English is a weak guide because at, from, with, by, and for each cover several Serbian relations. The useful editing question is not “Which Serbian word means with?” but “What role does this noun have in this scene?”
Two-case spatial prepositions: change of configuration versus established position
With пред, под, над, за, and међу, accusative can present entry into a spatial configuration, while instrumental presents the configuration as established. This is more precise than the beginner shortcut “motion versus rest”: a person can move while remaining под мостом, and ставити can create a new relation without describing a journey.
Курир је спустио пакет пред врата и одмах отишао.
The courier set the package down in front of the door and left immediately.
Пакет је цело јутро стајао пред вратима.
The package stood in front of the door all morning.
❌ Стави резервни кључ под отирачем.
Incorrect for placement into a new location — под requires the accusative отирач after ставити here.
✅ Стави резервни кључ под отирач.
Put the spare key under the doormat.
❌ Пас је мирно лежао под сто док смо вечерали.
Incorrect for an established location — под requires the instrumental столом.
✅ Пас је мирно лежао под столом док смо вечерали.
The dog lay quietly under the table while we ate dinner.
The same contrast works with међу:
Ушла је међу госте да поздрави старе пријатеље.
She went in among the guests to greet old friends.
Међу гостима је било и неколико њених бивших колега.
Several of her former colleagues were among the guests too.
За is not always spatial
The accusative with за also marks purpose, intended recipient, reference, exchange, or a deadline. These uses do not alternate with instrumental merely because nothing moves.
Купила је поклон за сестру и оставила га за касније.
She bought a gift for her sister and saved it for later.
❌ Ово је формулар за новим запосленима.
Incorrect — intended users after за require the accusative, not instrumental.
✅ Ово је формулар за нове запослене.
This is a form for new employees.
By contrast, spatial за + instrumental means “behind” or an established position at something: седети за столом “sit at the table.” Compare the configuration change:
Сели смо за сто поред прозора, а деца су већ седела за суседним столом.
We sat down at the table by the window, while the children were already sitting at the next table.
Both cases are grammatical because they encode different phases of the same scene: за сто establishes the position; за столом locates it.
С/са: source with genitive, companion with instrumental
The form of the preposition does not determine the case by itself. С/са + genitive can mark movement from a surface, event, institution-as-activity, or conventional source; с/са + instrumental marks accompaniment or association.
Вратила се с посла касније него обично, па је вечерала са сестром.
She came home from work later than usual, so she had dinner with her sister.
Узео је фасциклу са колегом и однео је у архиву.
He took the folder together with his colleague and carried it to the archive.
✅ Узео је фасциклу од колеге и однео је у архиву.
He took the folder from his colleague and carried it to the archive.
Case can distinguish the roles even when the noun endings are similar. Са састанка is genitive “from the meeting”; са сарадником is instrumental “with an associate.” For personal source or transfer, од + genitive is normally clearer than trying to make са mean English from.
Bare instrumental of means versus с/са + instrumental accompaniment
English uses with for both an instrument and a companion. Serbian normally uses a bare instrumental for means and с/са + instrumental for accompaniment.
На посао обично идем са аутобусом, а враћам се пешке.
I usually go to work together with the bus and walk home. (Grammatical only under this unusual accompaniment reading.)
✅ На посао обично идем аутобусом, а враћам се пешке.
I usually go to work by bus and walk home.
Исецкај поврће оштрим ножем, а затим га помешај с пиринчем.
Chop the vegetables with a sharp knife, then mix them with the rice.
Here ножем is the means used to act; с пиринчем adds an associated ingredient. The same contrast appears with people: разговарати с лекаром means the doctor is a conversation partner, while лечити се леком uses the instrumental for a treatment means.
Origin: из, с/са, and од encode different source scenes
Use из + genitive for origin from an interior or bounded domain, с/са + genitive for a surface and many activities/events, and од + genitive for departure from proximity, a person, or a source.
Изашли смо из позоришта и вратили се с представе право кући.
We left the theater and came straight home from the performance.
The theater is construed as a building with an interior; the performance is an event one attends. In real life both phrases may refer to the same departure, but they select different aspects of it.
❌ После дуге смене вратио се из посла уморнији него иначе.
Incorrect for the conventional source “from work” — Serbian normally says с посла.
✅ После дуге смене вратио се с посла уморнији него иначе.
After a long shift, he came home from work more tired than usual.
The fixed expression treats work as an activity or institutional point of departure. Из канцеларије remains correct when the interior of the office is what matters.
Endpoint, path, and orientation are not synonyms
До + genitive marks an endpoint or limit; кроз + accusative traces a path through a bounded space; по + locative distributes movement or activity across an area; према + dative gives orientation toward something without guaranteeing arrival.
Воз је стигао до границе, а затим наставио кроз дугачак тунел.
The train reached the border and then continued through a long tunnel.
Тражили смо изгубљеног пса по шуми, крећући се према реци.
We searched through the woods for the lost dog, moving toward the river.
❌ Кренули смо до излазу чим се огласио аларм.
Incorrect — до governs the genitive излаза, not the dative.
✅ Кренули смо према излазу чим се огласио аларм.
We headed toward the exit as soon as the alarm sounded.
The correction chooses према + dative because кренути highlights orientation at the start; кренули смо до излаза would be possible only with a special intended reading such as setting out on a route as far as the exit, and is less natural here.
Abstract frames must be learned whole
At advanced levels, many errors occur in fixed relational phrases rather than literal space:
| Frame | Meaning |
|---|---|
| упркос + dative | despite |
| током / због / уочи + genitive | during / because of / on the eve of |
| у вези са + instrumental | regarding, in connection with |
| с обзиром на + accusative | considering, given |
| у односу на + accusative | in relation to, compared with |
❌ Упркос лошег времена, концерт је одржан у дворишту.
Incorrect — English “despite” does not reveal the Serbian case; упркос governs the dative.
✅ Упркос лошем времену, концерт је одржан у дворишту.
Despite the bad weather, the concert was held in the courtyard.
❌ Јављам вам се у вези вашег захтева од прошлог месеца.
Incomplete in careful standard Serbian — the frame is у вези са + instrumental.
✅ Јављам вам се у вези са вашим захтевом од прошлог месеца.
I'm contacting you regarding your request from last month.
Plural endings can hide the case: према условима is dative plural, са условима instrumental plural, and о условима locative plural. The shared -има does not make the frames interchangeable.
Common Mistakes
Using “motion = accusative” without checking configuration
❌ Сатима су ходали под тунел у потрази за излазом.
Incorrect — they remain within the established location while moving, so под takes instrumental тунелом.
✅ Сатима су ходали под тунелом у потрази за излазом.
They walked beneath the tunnel for hours looking for an exit.
The scenario is unusual but grammatical: perhaps they are in channels beneath the tunnel. Motion alone does not force accusative.
Translating English about or with before identifying the role
Разговарала је с професорком о новом програму.
She spoke with the professor about the new program.
Разговарала је о професорки с новим директором.
She spoke about the professor with the new director.
Both are grammatical. Swapping с and о swaps conversation partner and topic.
Keeping the right preposition but supplying the wrong case
❌ Током целу недељу нисмо добили одговор.
Incorrect — током governs the genitive, not the accusative.
✅ Током целе недеље нисмо добили одговор.
We didn't receive a reply all week.
Treating synonymous English glosses as interchangeable Serbian frames
❌ С обзиром тешким условима, екипа је добро напредовала.
Incorrect blend — с обзиром на takes accusative; упркос takes dative.
✅ С обзиром на тешке услове, екипа је добро напредовала.
Given the difficult conditions, the team made good progress.
Practice
1. Repair case or preposition
- Сакрио је писмо међу старим књигама. (new placement intended)
- Са кишом смо ипак наставили пут. (concession intended)
- Вратила се из факултета око шест. (institutional activity intended)
- Према нови план, радови почињу у мају.
Suggested answers: међу старе књиге; Упркос киши; с факултета; Према новом плану.
2. Explain the meaning shift
Contrast: ставио је столицу пред прозор / столица је стајала пред прозором; путовао је колима / путовао је с колима; писала је професору / писала је о професору.
The first contrast is new versus established configuration. In the second, bare instrumental gives the vehicle, while с колима literally treats the car as an accompanying entity and is marked for ordinary travel. In the third, dative marks recipient, while о + locative marks topic.
Self-editing checklist
- Does the case establish a new spatial relation or describe one already in force?
- Is с/са marking a source with genitive or accompaniment with instrumental?
- Is a bare instrumental needed for means rather than с/са + instrumental?
- Am I choosing из, с/са, or од according to the source scene?
- Have I learned the complete abstract frame, such as упркос + dative or с обзиром на + accusative?
- If the phrase is grammatical, has it changed the role or scene I meant?
Key Takeaways
- Preposition and case jointly encode a role; translating an English preposition is not enough.
- Accusative versus instrumental with spatial prepositions contrasts a newly established configuration with an existing one.
- Treat fixed abstract frames such as упркос + dative and с обзиром на + accusative as complete lexical units.
