Mistake: Picking the Wrong Pair Member

Serbian aspect does not simply encode English tense. An imperfective presents an event from inside—as an activity, process, habit, or open-ended situation—while a perfective packages it as one bounded whole with a relevant endpoint. Choosing the wrong member can make a sentence ungrammatical, but it often does something subtler: it answers a different question.

The hardest part is lexical. Читати—прочитати is a close activity/result pair, but adding a prefix can also create a new verb: писати “write,” потписати “sign,” and преписати “copy/rewrite” are not three interchangeable aspect forms. First choose the lexical event; only then choose how to view it.

Ongoing “now”: imperfective opens the event

A present-tense perfective normally cannot locate one concrete event as unfolding at speech time. Сада читам извештај places us inside the reading; прочитам packages the reading as a complete whole and therefore belongs naturally in future-oriented, conditional, habitual-bounded, or subordinate contexts.

❌ Сада прочитам записник, па не могу да разговарам.

Incorrect for an activity happening now — прочитам presents a bounded whole rather than an ongoing reading.

✅ Сада читам записник, па не могу да разговарам.

I'm reading the minutes now, so I can't talk.

Кад прочитам записник, позваћу те.

When I finish reading the minutes, I'll call you.

The third sentence shows why прочитам itself is not “a wrong present.” Its perfective present is licensed in a future time clause. The error is the mismatch between aspect, tense environment, and intended viewpoint.

💡
Ask whether the sentence looks inside the event or surveys it as a completed whole. English tense words such as “now” and “yesterday” help, but the intended viewpoint is decisive.

Activity question versus result question

In the past, both members are grammatical but ask different things. Да ли си читао рукопис? asks whether you engaged in the activity or had the experience. Јеси ли прочитао рукопис? asks whether the whole manuscript reached the endpoint “read.”

Синоћ сам читао рукопис, али сам стигао само до трећег поглавља.

I was reading the manuscript last night, but I only got to chapter three.

Синоћ сам прочитао рукопис и послао уредници белешке.

I read the manuscript through last night and sent the editor my notes.

❌ Јеси ли читао цео уговор до краја? Треба ми коначан одговор.

Misleading for the intended result — читао asks about the activity, while цео...до краја and a final answer require completion.

✅ Јеси ли прочитао цео уговор до краја? Треба ми коначан одговор.

Have you read the whole contract through? I need a final answer.

The imperfective version is not meaningless. It could be natural if the speaker asks “Were you reading the whole contract?” or contrasts reading with merely skimming. In an error clinic, it matters whether a form is impossible or simply selects the wrong interpretation.

Repetition: activity as a habit versus a completed unit each time

The classroom shortcut “repeated = imperfective” is useful but incomplete. Imperfective is the unmarked choice for a habit or recurring activity with no focus on each endpoint:

Током студија сам сваког викенда радио у књижари.

While I was a student, I worked in a bookstore every weekend.

Perfective can occur when each repetition is understood as one completed, bounded unit, especially in sequences or generalized statements.

Сваког јутра попијем кафу, проверим пошту и кренем на посао.

Every morning I drink a coffee, check my email, and head to work.

English every day therefore does not mechanically force one member. Compare an open repeated activity with a quantified completed result:

Сваког дана сам читао рукописе из архива.

Every day I read manuscripts from the archive.

Сваког дана сам прочитао по десет рукописа.

Every day I read ten manuscripts through.

Both sentences describe repetition. The imperfective читао leaves each day’s reading unbounded, whereas the perfective прочитао presents ten completed readings on each occasion. Repetition alone therefore does not decide the aspect; the viewpoint on each repeated event does.

Phase verbs require an imperfective complement

Verbs such as почети “begin,” наставити “continue,” and престати “stop” select a process with internal duration. A perfective event is packaged as a whole and cannot normally supply the process whose beginning, continuation, or cessation is being described.

❌ Почела је да напише одговор, али ју је прекинуо телефон.

Incorrect — after почела је, Serbian needs the imperfective process писати.

✅ Почела је да пише одговор, али ју је прекинуо телефон.

She started writing a reply, but the phone interrupted her.

❌ После паузе смо наставили да решимо технички проблем.

Incorrect — наставити selects the ongoing process решавати, not the bounded result решити.

✅ После паузе смо наставили да решавамо технички проблем.

After the break, we continued working on the technical problem.

This is one of the clearest structural tests in the system. When a phase verb directly scopes over another event, choose the imperfective member.

Negation: “did not do it” versus “did not finish it”

A negative imperfective can deny that an activity occurred, characterize its absence, or say that it did not continue through a stated endpoint. A negative perfective often denies attainment of the endpoint without denying that some work took place.

Нисам писао извештај; цео дан сам одговарао на позиве.

I didn't work on the report; I spent the whole day answering calls.

Нисам написао извештај; остао ми је још закључак.

I didn't finish writing the report; I still have the conclusion left.

Нисам гледао филм до краја — искључио сам га после пола сата.

I didn't keep watching the film to the end—I turned it off after half an hour.

Нисам одгледао филм до краја — искључио сам га после пола сата.

I didn't finish watching the film—I turned it off after half an hour.

Both versions are natural. Нисам гледао ... до краја says that the activity did not continue through the endpoint; нисам одгледао ... до краја packages the whole viewing as an accomplishment that was not achieved. The prefix од- makes that bounded reading explicit, but it is a lexical-aspectual choice, not a universal prefix you can add to every verb.

Requests and prohibitions: event shape, not automatic politeness

A perfective imperative commonly requests one bounded action: затвори прозор. An imperfective imperative presents an activity, repetition, or immediate engagement: затварај прозоре пре одласка “close the windows before leaving” as a recurring instruction; улази “come in” as an invitation to start moving in.

❌ Пиши ми адресу на овом папиру, само једном и читко.

Marked for the intended single completed result — једном and a required usable address favor perfective напиши.

✅ Напиши ми адресу на овом папиру, само једном и читко.

Write the address down for me on this piece of paper, just once and legibly.

Не отварај врата непознатима.

Don't open the door to strangers.

Немој да заборавиш да закључаш врата.

Don't forget to lock the door.

Negative commands do not impose a blanket imperfective rule: не отварај blocks a class of actions, but perfective немој да заборавиш warns against one bounded failure. Aspect does not by itself make an imperative polite; молим те, conditional phrasing, intonation, and social context do that work.

Prefixes may change the verb, not just its viewpoint

English speakers often see a familiar stem and treat every prefixed form as “the completed version.” That can select the wrong lexical event.

❌ Молим вас, напишите овде да сте примили пакет.

Wrong lexical verb for the intended action — написати means write something; the form asks for a signature, so потписати is needed.

✅ Молим вас, потпишите овде да сте примили пакет.

Please sign here to confirm that you received the package.

The relevant pair is потписивати—потписати, not писати—потписати. Similarly, преписивати—преписати concerns copying or rewriting, while записивати—записати concerns noting something down. The aspect dictionary strategy treats these as lexical networks rather than one prefix chart.

Common Mistakes

Using a perfective as an ongoing present

❌ Шта урадиш сада у кухињи?

Incorrect for “What are you doing now?” — урадиш is perfective and bounded.

✅ Шта сада радиш у кухињи?

What are you doing in the kitchen now?

Using an imperfective when a deadline requires a result

❌ До сутра ћу писати жалбу и послати је адвокату.

Misleading for the promised result — писати only promises activity, not a finished complaint.

✅ До сутра ћу написати жалбу и послати је адвокату.

By tomorrow I'll write the complaint and send it to the lawyer.

Selecting a result verb after a phase verb

❌ Престали су да поправе лифт јер нису имали део.

Incorrect — престати selects the imperfective process поправљати.

✅ Престали су да поправљају лифт јер нису имали део.

They stopped repairing the elevator because they didn't have the part.

Treating two prefixed verbs as automatic equivalents

❌ Преписао сам број телефона у бележницу чим ми га је издиктирала.

Wrong lexical choice if the number was first recorded — преписати means copy/rewrite from another source.

✅ Записао сам број телефона у бележницу чим ми га је издиктирала.

I wrote the phone number down in my notebook as soon as she dictated it.

Practice

1. Diagnose activity or endpoint

Choose the form that matches the context.

  1. Кад (читам / прочитам) поруку, одмах ћу ти одговорити.
  2. Управо (кувам / скувам) ручак; позваћу те касније.
  3. Нисам (поправљао / поправио) славину; и даље цури.
  4. Сваке зиме (проводимо / проведемо) месец дана на планини.

Answers: прочитам; кувам; поправио if the point is failed result, although work may have occurred; normally проводимо for the open habit, while проведемо can bound each month-long stay.

2. Repair the lexical network

Choose among написати, потписати, записати, преписати.

  1. уговор at the bottom; 2. address as someone dictates it; 3. essay to completion; 4. quotation from a book.

Answers: потписати уговор; записати адресу; написати есеј; преписати цитат.

Self-editing checklist

  • Am I viewing an unfolding activity or one bounded whole?
  • Does a phase verb require the imperfective process?
  • Under negation, am I denying all activity or only the result?
  • Does repetition describe an open habit or a completed unit each time?
  • Have I checked that the prefix preserves the lexical meaning I intend?
  • Is the alternative truly ungrammatical, or merely a different and unwanted interpretation?

Key Takeaways

  • Imperfective opens an event as process or habit; perfective presents one bounded whole.
  • Phase verbs select an imperfective complement, but repetition and negation require semantic diagnosis rather than slogans.
  • Check the lexical meaning of every prefixed verb before treating it as an aspectual partner.
