Lexical Meaning, Telicity, and Aspect

Serbian aspect belongs to the verb lexeme, but a clause also has a lexical event shape. A verb may name a state, activity, change, or achievement; its object and modifiers may add a natural endpoint. Telicity is the presence of such an endpoint, while perfective/imperfective aspect is the speaker's grammaticalized viewpoint. The two interact closely, but they are not identical.

Three questions, not one

When choosing a Serbian verb, separate:

  1. Lexical meaning: what situation does this verb family name?
  2. Telicity: does this clause contain a natural endpoint?
  3. Viewpoint aspect: is the event opened internally or presented as a bounded whole?

The past tense answers none of these questions by itself; it only locates the situation before the speech time.

Јуче је Марко писао понуду два сата.

Yesterday Marko worked on writing the proposal for two hours. (past, imperfective, no completed result asserted)

Јуче је Марко написао понуду за два сата.

Yesterday Marko wrote the proposal in two hours. (past, perfective, endpoint reached)

The same participants and project appear in both. Два сата measures activity; за два сата measures time to the completed proposal.

Lexical classes shape the available contrast

Lexical shapeTypical Serbian exampleNatural question
stateзнати одговорDid the state hold?
activityтрчати по паркуWas the activity occurring/how long?
accomplishmentградити кућуWas the goal reached?
achievementнаћи кључDid the change occur?

States and activities are naturally open. Accomplishments contain a process leading toward a result. Achievements focus a change or discovery. Serbian morphology can change the lexical shape as well as the viewpoint.

Знала је адресу, али није знала број стана.

She knew the address, but she didn't know the apartment number. (state)

Када је сазнала број стана, одмах је позвонила.

When she found out the apartment number, she rang the bell immediately. (change into a state of knowing)

Сазнати is not merely a perfective camera angle on знати. Its prefix creates the transition “come to know,” which leads to the state знати.

Objects can supply a scale or endpoint

Compare consuming an unbounded substance with exhausting a measured quantity:

Током састанка је полако пила воду.

During the meeting she slowly drank water. (open activity)

Пре поласка је попила чашу воде.

Before leaving she drank a glass of water. (bounded quantity consumed)

The object чашу воде provides a measurable limit, and по- packages reaching it. Yet a bounded object does not force perfective:

Пила је чашу воде док је чекала резултате.

She was drinking a glass of water while waiting for the results. (bounded object, imperfective internal view)

The glass makes an endpoint available; imperfective пила је simply does not assert reaching it. Telicity and viewpoint can therefore diverge.

💡
An endpoint can exist without being asserted. Imperfective читати књигу gives access to the process even though the book has a last page; perfective прочитати књигу includes reaching that last page.

Perfective need not encode a result

Some perfectives impose a boundary without a culmination. Delimitative по- can mean doing an activity for a while.

После ручка смо порадили у башти, па смо отишли у шетњу.

After lunch we did a bit of work in the garden, then went for a walk.

Порадили смо is perfective because the work episode is bounded, but no garden project is said to be complete. Similarly, inceptive запевати bounds the onset of singing rather than its endpoint. The aspect and time-adverbials page develops the diagnostics supplied by duration and time-to-result phrases.

Чим је музичар засвирао, публика је утихнула.

As soon as the musician began to play, the audience fell silent.

These verbs show why “perfective = completed result” is too narrow. The relevant edge can be a limit or beginning supplied by lexical derivation.

Imperfective can occur after a result has been reached

Because imperfective controls viewpoint rather than real-world completion, it can describe an activity that the wider context shows was completed.

Јелена је јуче кувала ручак, а у два смо сви сели за сто.

Jelena cooked lunch yesterday, and at two we all sat down at the table.

The meal was evidently ready, but кувала је presents the cooking activity. If the result itself mattered—whether the meal became ready—скувала је ручак would be the direct choice.

Јелена је скувала ручак пре него што су гости стигли.

Jelena finished cooking lunch before the guests arrived.

Quantization and distributive boundaries

A quantified object can divide an activity into bounded units. Compare an open reading habit with one completed set:

На одмору је читала стручне чланке.

On vacation she read specialist articles. (open activity/indefinite set)

На одмору је прочитала пет стручних чланака.

On vacation she read five specialist articles through. (quantized set completed)

The numeral strengthens telicity, but aspect still contributes viewpoint. Читала је пет чланака can mean she worked on those five without asserting that all five were finished.

The English perfect is a different category

English has written is a tense-aspect construction relating a past event to the present. Serbian perfective написати is a lexical aspect member and can appear in past, future, imperative, conditional, or dependent present forms.

Напиши ми адресу пре него што кренеш.

Write down the address for me before you leave. (perfective imperative)

Ако напишеш адресу читко, курир ће је лакше пронаћи.

If you write the address clearly, the courier will find it more easily. (perfective dependent present)

Neither Serbian verb is “present perfect.” Equating the similar terms perfect and perfective causes systematic errors.

A dialogue that separates attempt from result

Јеси ли отворио теглу? — Отварао сам је клештима, али се поклопац није померио.

Did you get the jar open? — I tried opening it with pliers, but the lid didn't move. (male respondent)

Perfective отворио asks about the change of state. Imperfective отварао сам reports effort directed toward that telic result without asserting success. The lexical goal exists throughout; viewpoint determines whether reaching it is included.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Diagnose all three layers

Analyze Пила је чашу сока and Попила је чашу сока for lexical meaning, the endpoint supplied by the object, and grammatical aspect. State exactly what only the second sentence asserts.

Task 2: Bound an activity without completing a project

Write a natural sentence with порадити or поразговарати. Explain why it is perfective even though it need not produce a completed object or solved problem.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сваки свршени глагол значи да је неки предмет успешно завршен.

Incorrect — perfective may mark onset, transition, or a limited episode rather than a completed object.

✅ Поразговарали смо десетак минута, али нисмо решили спор.

We talked for about ten minutes, but we didn't resolve the dispute.

❌ Ако реченица има циљ, глагол мора бити свршен.

Incorrect — an endpoint may be available while imperfective views the process internally.

✅ Читала је приручник када јој је зазвонио телефон.

She was reading the manual when her phone rang.

❌ Глагол написати је српски превод енглеског перфекта.

Incorrect — Serbian perfective aspect is not the English present perfect tense.

✅ Сутра ће написати коначну верзију превода.

Tomorrow he will write the final version of the translation.

❌ Писао је понуду значи да понуда сигурно није завршена.

Incorrect — imperfective does not assert the endpoint, but later context may show it was reached.

✅ Писао је понуду цело јутро и послао је клијенту пре ручка.

He worked on the proposal all morning and sent it to the client before lunch.

Key Takeaways

  • Lexical event shape, telicity, and grammatical viewpoint are related but separate layers.
  • Objects and adverbials can supply endpoints, while imperfective may still view the internal process.
  • Perfective can bound an onset or limited episode without encoding a completed product.
  • Past time and English perfect constructions do not determine Serbian perfective aspect.
