The forms овај, тај, онај do more than point: they display the same pronominal pattern that appears across Serbian noun phrases. Once you recognize овог новог стана, тој мојој колегиници, and оним добрим људима as agreement chains, demonstrative declension stops being an isolated list.
This page concentrates on morphology and syntax. For the spatial and discourse contrast among the three stems, begin with овај, тај, онај.
Why It Is Called the Pronominal Pattern
Demonstratives, long-form adjectives, and possessives share conspicuous endings. Compare the words in each phrase:
| Features | Demonstrative | Possessive | Adjective | Noun |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| genitive masculine singular | овог | мог | новог | стана |
| dative feminine singular | тој | мојој | новој | колегиници |
| instrumental plural | оним | нашим | старим | пријатељима |
The endings do not have to look like the noun ending. What matters is that every agreeing modifier encodes the same gender, number, and case.
Без овог старог кључа не можемо да отворимо подрум.
Without this old key, we cannot open the basement.

The Complete Singular Paradigm
The short and expanded variants -ог/-ога and -ом/-оме have the same grammatical value. Shorter forms are frequent in both speech and writing; expanded forms are also standard and may be chosen for rhythm or emphasis. Forms in -ому exist but are comparatively marked in contemporary Serbian and are most likely in elevated or older prose; learners do not need them for neutral production.
| Case | овај: masculine / feminine / neuter | тај: masculine / feminine / neuter | онај: masculine / feminine / neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
There is no separate ordinary vocative set. Direct address is built around a vocative noun or name, not by mechanically adding a seventh demonstrative row.
Two structural facts explain most of the table. First, овај and онај lose -ај before oblique endings: ов-ог, он-ом, not овајог, онајом. Second, masculine and neuter merge in genitive, dative, instrumental, and locative singular; feminine remains distinct.
Од овога тренутка сви захтеви се подносе електронски.
From this moment on, all requests are submitted electronically.
Пришла је оној жени која је стајала крај прозора.
She approached that woman who was standing by the window.
Тим возом стижеш у Нови Сад пре подне.
You will reach Novi Sad before noon on that train.
Masculine Accusative: Animacy Is Part of the Pattern
Masculine singular accusative equals nominative with an inanimate referent and genitive with an animate referent. The demonstrative and every adjective follow the same distinction:
Погледај овај снимак, па позови овог младог сниматеља.
Watch this recording, then call this young cameraman.
Овај снимак is inanimate; овог младог сниматеља is animate. English word order gives no warning that two forms of this are required, but Serbian agreement makes animacy visible across the whole phrase.
The Complete Plural Paradigm
| Case | овај: m / f / n | тај: m / f / n | онај: m / f / n |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | ови / ове / ова | ти / те / та | они / оне / она |
| G | ових / ових / ових | тих / тих / тих | оних / оних / оних |
| D | овим / овим / овим | тим / тим / тим | оним / оним / оним |
| A | ове / ове / ова | те / те / та | оне / оне / она |
| I | овим / овим / овим | тим / тим / тим | оним / оним / оним |
| L | овим / овим / овим | тим / тим / тим | оним / оним / оним |
Oblique plural forms collapse gender distinctions: овим can be dative, instrumental, or locative with masculine, feminine, or neuter nouns. The preposition, verb, and sentence meaning identify the case.
Из ових села сваког јутра полазе аутобуси за град.
Buses leave these villages for the city every morning.

Keep those old photographs in a dry box.

Standalone Use and Omitted Nouns
When a noun has already been established, a demonstrative can carry its features alone. This is ellipsis, not a separate “pronoun declension”: the same case form appears whether or not the noun is spoken.
— Да ли ти више одговара овај термин или онај у петак? — Онај, јер у четвртак путујем.
‘Does this appointment or the one on Friday suit you better?’ ‘The one on Friday, because I am traveling on Thursday.’
Ову фасциклу остави овде, а ону однеси директорки.
Leave this folder here, and take that one to the director.
Masculine онај recovers термин; feminine accusative ону recovers фасциклу. Agreement keeps reference clear after the noun disappears.
Full Demonstratives and Second-Position Clitics
Demonstratives have no clitic forms. Овој, том, оних, and the rest are stressed, full words. A demonstrative phrase can occupy the first constituent position, after which genuine clitics form their cluster:
Овој књизи сам се вратила после много година.
I returned to this book after many years.
Том старом пријатељу сам је послао још јуче.
I sent it to that old friend yesterday already.
In the first sentence, сам се follows the full phrase овој књизи. In the second, сам је follows том старом пријатељу. The demonstrative declines because of case; the clitics take their position because they are prosodically weak. These are separate systems.
Personal pronouns, by contrast, may alternate between a full and a clitic form:
О томе сам говорио њему, не њој.
I spoke about that to him, not to her.
О томе сам му говорио још прошле недеље.
I spoke to him about that as early as last week.
Њему is contrastively stressed; му is a neutral dative clitic. Томе stays full in both. Serbian does not have forms such as an unstressed “short томе.”
Possession Inside a Demonstrative Phrase
Possessives agree alongside demonstratives, but свој is selected by clause structure: it refers to the clause subject's own possession.
Тај архитекта је представио свој нови пројекат инвеститорима.
That architect presented his own new project to the investors.
Свој agrees with masculine accusative пројекат, while its possessor is subject тај архитекта. Његов пројекат would normally identify another man's project or create explicit contrast.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Carry the agreement chain
Put овај мој стари пасош into (1) genitive after без, (2) locative after у, and (3) instrumental after са.
Answers: без овог мог старог пасоша; у овом мом старом пасошу; са овим мојим старим пасошем.
Task 2: Explain the ending
In Познајем ове људе, али не познајем ова села, why are the demonstratives different although both phrases are accusative plural?
Answer: masculine plural accusative is ове, while neuter plural accusative is ова. Plural accusative does not use the singular animacy alternation.
Common Mistakes
Attaching endings to the full nominative stem
❌ Нема овајог модела у нашој величини.
Incorrect — овај drops -ај before the genitive ending: овог модела.
✅ Нема овог модела у нашој величини.
They do not have this model in our size.
Using dative/locative feminine where instrumental is required
❌ Путујем са овој искусној водичкињи.
Incorrect — са ‘with’ requires instrumental: са овом искусном водичкињом.
✅ Путујем са овом искусном водичкињом.
I am traveling with this experienced guide.
Missing masculine animacy across the phrase
❌ Позвали смо тај познати глумац на премијеру.
Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires тог познатог глумца.
✅ Позвали смо тог познатог глумца на премијеру.
We invited that famous actor to the premiere.
Breaking the second-position cluster
❌ Оном човеку је рекао сам истину.
Incorrect in neutral order — the auxiliary сам belongs in the second-position clitic cluster.
✅ Оном човеку сам рекао истину.
I told that man the truth.
Using његов for the subject's own possession
❌ Овај лекар је заборавио његову торбу у ординацији.
Incorrect for ‘his own bag’ — његову normally points to another man.
✅ Овај лекар је заборавио своју торбу у ординацији.
This doctor left his own bag in the consulting room.
Key Takeaways
- Demonstratives share pronominal endings with long adjectives and possessives.
- Овај/онај use the oblique stems ов-/он-; do not attach endings to -ај.
- Masculine singular accusative follows animacy, while plural accusative follows gender.
- Oblique plural forms merge gender and often case, so government supplies the interpretation.
- Demonstratives are full stressed forms; genuine clitics follow their own second-position rules.
