Serbian has two superficially similar ways to place a topic at the left edge. Topic fronting moves an integrated, case-marked constituent to the beginning and leaves a gap in its ordinary position. Left dislocation places a topic outside the following clause, marks an intonational break, and resumes the topic with a pronoun or other expression inside the clause.
The central contrast
| Construction | Left edge | Inside the clause | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| integrated topic fronting | has the case/preposition required by the verb | gap; no resumptive object | normally no detached pause |
| hanging-topic left dislocation | often default nominative or што се тиче + genitive | resumptive clitic/full phrase | comma, dash, or audible break |
| contrastive left dislocation | often case-connected | strong resumptive form | clear contrastive break |
Compare the same invoice:
Овај рачун сам платила јуче.
I paid this invoice yesterday. (integrated accusative topic; female speaker)
Овај рачун, платила сам га јуче.
This invoice—I paid it yesterday. (left-dislocated nominative topic with resumptive га; female speaker)
In the first sentence, accusative овај рачун is the direct object of платила and directly hosts auxiliary сам. In the second, nominative овај рачун is detached; accusative clitic га fulfills the object role inside the clause. The pause is part of the structure.
Integrated case-marked fronting
Many arguments and governed prepositional phrases can be fronted when they are already active or being contrasted. Extraction from embedded or island-like domains has additional restrictions.
Овом проблему ћемо се вратити после паузе.
We will return to this problem after the break. (dative governed by вратити се)
О новом буџету су разговарали више од два сата.
They discussed the new budget for more than two hours. (governed prepositional topic)
Ту понуду нисмо прихватили, али смо је пажљиво размотрили.
We did not accept that offer, but we considered it carefully.
Fronted овом проблему, о новом буџету, and ту понуду retain the case or preposition selected by the verb. The first clause contains no extra object pronoun in the gap. The later је in the coordinated clause is a new pronoun in a new clause, not doubling of the fronted object.
English also permits some topicalization, but Serbian uses it more productively because case keeps roles visible. That productivity still depends on a discourse link: opening a conversation with an unmotivated object topic can sound theatrical or incomplete.
The broader topic–focus system is explained in Topic, Focus, and Information Structure; long-distance fronting and island restrictions belong to Extraction, Fronting, and Clitic Dependencies.
Hanging topics: establish, pause, resume
A hanging topic names the entity first, often in default nominative, and then comments on it with a full clause.
Она нова апликација, још је нисам инсталирао.
That new app—I still haven't installed it. (informal spoken left dislocation; male speaker)
Ваш предлог, о њему ћемо разговарати на следећој седници.
Your proposal—we will discuss it at the next session.
The main clauses require accusative је and prepositional о њему. The detached topics do not occupy those positions syntactically. This strategy helps speech planning: a speaker can establish a complex referent, pause, and then build a clause around a short resumptive.
Што се тиче + genitive makes the detached relation explicit and is neutral in careful speech and writing.
Што се тиче рокова, њих можемо да померимо за недељу дана.
As for the deadlines, we can move them by a week.
Here full accusative њих carries contrast. Neutral continuation can instead use clitic их after a suitable host: што се тиче рокова, можемо их померити.
Resumptive clitics are common with hanging topics in conversation, but they are not filler words. The pronoun must have the case required by its position inside the clause.
Contrastive left dislocation
A strong resumptive can divide a set and assign different comments to its members.
Ани — њој сам послала оригинал; Марку само копију.
Ana—I sent her the original; Marko only a copy. (female speaker; contrastive recipients)
Овај уговор — њега морамо да потпишемо данас, а анекс може да сачека.
This contract—we must sign this one today, while the annex can wait.
In the first sentence, both Ани and full њој are dative. In the second, nominative hanging topic овај уговор is resumed by contrastive accusative њега. Speakers’ case choices and prosody distinguish subtypes of left dislocation; the stable learner insight is that the following clause contains an overt resumptive and a clear topic–comment break.
Do not double an ordinary integrated topic without a contrastive or dislocation structure. Neutral standard Serbian prefers either Тај уговор смо потписали or a clearly detached Тај уговор, њега смо потписали.
Contrastive topics versus contrastive focus
A contrastive topic asks us to consider one item and implies a separate comment about another. Contrastive focus corrects which item makes the proposition true.
Извештај смо завршили, а презентацију још припремамо.
We have finished the report, while we are still preparing the presentation. (contrastive topics)
Баш извештај смо завршили, не презентацију.
It was the report that we finished, not the presentation. (contrastive focus)
The first sentence establishes two topic–comment pairs. The second rejects one alternative inside a single proposition. Both begin with an object, so position alone cannot diagnose their discourse function.
The clitic-host difference
An integrated fronted topic belongs to the clause and normally hosts its clitics.
Ову адресу ми је послала Јелена.
Jelena sent me this address. (integrated object topic)
A detached topic stands outside the following intonational clause. Its resumptive and another accented element build the new clause.
Ова адреса, Јелена ми ју је послала јутрос.
This address—Jelena sent it to me this morning. (detached topic; resumed by feminine ју)
The first cluster ми је follows accusative topic ову адресу. In the second, main-clause subject Јелена hosts ми ју је; the feminine object becomes ју before auxiliary је. The comma is not merely decorative—it corresponds to a separate intonational unit.
Heavy topics and register
Left dislocation is useful when the topic is long or syntactically difficult to integrate.
Онај предлог који смо добили непосредно пре седнице — о њему нисмо стигли да разговарамо.
That proposal we received immediately before the session—we did not have time to discuss it.
The heavy nominative topic is followed by a dash, and prepositional о њему satisfies разговарати о. In edited prose, О оном предлогу који смо добили… нисмо стигли да разговарамо is a more compact integrated alternative. The dislocated version remains useful for deliberate topic management; in casual speech, repetitions and resumptive clitics are even more frequent (informal).
Literary prose may separate a topic and comment more dramatically, but a learner should not remove pronouns or case marking merely to imitate rhythm.
A short dialogue
„Шта ћемо с пријавама?“ — „Оне непотпуне, њих ћемо вратити кандидатима. Остале ћемо проследити комисији, а о хитним случајевима ћемо одлучити данас.“
‘What will we do with the applications?’ — ‘The incomplete ones—we'll return those to the applicants. We'll forward the others to the committee, and we'll decide on the urgent cases today.’
Оне непотпуне, њих… is contrastive left dislocation with a full resumptive. Остале and о хитним случајевима are integrated case-marked topics without doubling. All three structures divide the already active application set into separate comments.
A fronting diagnostic
- Identify the role required inside the clause.
- Check whether the left phrase bears that case/preposition.
- Listen or punctuate for an intonational boundary.
- Look for a co-referential clitic, full pronoun, or PP inside the clause.
- State whether the construction establishes a topic, contrasts topics, or corrects a focus.
- Calculate clitic position inside the integrated clause, not across a detached boundary.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Build both structures
Express “I read this report yesterday” once with integrated accusative fronting and once with a nominative hanging topic plus accusative resumptive. Mark the gap or pronoun and explain the punctuation.
Task 2: Divide a topic set
Contrast three agenda items. Use one integrated topic, one што се тиче phrase, and one contrastive left dislocation with a full resumptive. Preserve the case required inside every comment clause.
Common Mistakes
❌ Овај извештај сам прочитао га јуче.
Incorrect — integrated fronting leaves a gap; do not add a postverbal resumptive га.
✅ Овај извештај сам прочитао јуче.
I read this report yesterday. (male speaker)
❌ Ова књига, прочитао сам јуче.
Incorrect left dislocation — nominative ова књига is detached, but the following clause lacks the required accusative object resumptive.
✅ Ова књига, прочитао сам је јуче.
This book—I read it yesterday. (male speaker)
❌ Што се тиче Ане, разговарао сам са јуче.
Incorrect — са requires the full instrumental resumptive њом.
✅ Што се тиче Ане, разговарао сам с њом јуче.
As for Ana, I spoke with her yesterday. (male speaker)
❌ Ова адреса, ми ју је Јелена послала.
Incorrect — the detached topic does not host the following clause, and clitic ми cannot begin it.
✅ Ова адреса, Јелена ми ју је послала.
This address—Jelena sent it to me.
Key Takeaways
- Integrated fronting uses the case required by the verb, leaves a gap, and normally has no detached pause.
- Left dislocation establishes an external topic and resumes it overtly inside the following clause.
- Hanging topics often use default nominative or што се тиче + genitive; contrastive dislocation favors a strong resumptive.
- Contrastive topic and contrastive focus can share initial position but answer different discourse questions.
- A detached topic does not host clitics across its intonational boundary.
- Resumptive form and case are determined by the role inside the comment clause.
