Extraction, Fronting, and Clitic Dependencies

Fronting places a constituent before its neutral position; extraction creates a dependency between that fronted constituent and an interpreted gap inside a clause. Serbian licenses wh-fronting, contrastive fronting, and even some separations inside noun phrases that English forbids. It does not, however, license arbitrary movement across every clause or phrase boundary, and the new first constituent changes where clitics are placed.

A baseline and its fronted alternatives

Start with a neutral subject–verb–object presentation.

Ана је јуче показала нове фотографије Марку.

Ana showed the new photographs to Marko yesterday. (neutral subject-first order)

The same event can answer different questions:

Нове фотографије је Ана јуче показала Марку.

As for the new photographs, Ana showed them to Marko yesterday. (object topic)

Баш нове фотографије је Ана показала Марку, а не старе.

It was specifically the new photographs that Ana showed Marko, not the old ones. (contrastive focus)

Марку је Ана показала нове фотографије, а Јелени снимак.

Ana showed Marko the new photographs, and the recording to Jelena. (recipients contrasted)

All three nonneutral orders place a case-marked argument first. Case preserves its grammatical role, but discourse distinguishes topical “as for…” fronting from narrow contrast. Word order alone is not enough: the contrastive expressions баш and а не, plus spoken prominence, identify focus.

The broader discourse contrast is developed in Topic Fronting and Focus Placement.

The clitic је follows the fronted constituent in every example. Fronting therefore creates a placement dependency: changing the left edge changes the first host.

Wh-fronting

Serbian normally places interrogative constituents at the beginning of a direct information question.

Ко је јуче показао фотографије Марку?

Who showed the photographs to Marko yesterday?

Коме је Ана јуче показала фотографије?

Who did Ana show the photographs to yesterday?

Шта је Ана јуче показала Марку?

What did Ana show Marko yesterday?

Unlike English, Serbian does not need subject–auxiliary inversion. Case on коме identifies the recipient, and clitic је takes second position after the initial wh-constituent.

Multiple wh-fronting is also possible:

Ко је коме шта обећао на крају састанка?

Who promised what to whom at the end of the meeting?

All three interrogative phrases occur at the left edge, but their ordering is not random. Grammatical role, discourse context, and whether the question seeks one pair or a complete set of answers affect preferred order. Ко је коме шта… is a useful neutral model; do not permute the wh-phrases merely because case makes them recognizable.

💡
In a Serbian wh-question, locate the initial interrogative constituent first. The clitic cluster normally follows it; do not copy English auxiliary-first order.

Long-distance dependencies

A wh-phrase can be interpreted as the argument of a verb inside a following complement clause.

Кога мислиш да ће Ана позвати на разговор?

Who do you think Ana will invite in for a conversation?

Кога is understood as the object of embedded позвати, not of мислиш. The matrix clause has no overt clitic; the embedded clause begins with да ће, where future clitic ће calculates its position inside that clause.

An overt matrix clitic stays in its own domain:

Коју си књигу рекао да ћеш ми позајмити?

Which book did you say you would lend me? (addressing a man)

Matrix auxiliary си follows the first word коју inside the fronted wh-phrase, an attested first-word placement. Embedded ћеш ми follows да. The dependency crosses the clause boundary, but the clitic clusters do not merge.

Extraction changes the host of a cluster, not its internal order. In ћеш ми, the auxiliary still precedes the dative pronoun; larger clusters retain the ordinary sequence described under Clitic Cluster Order.

Long-distance extraction is easier from selected content complements than from relative, adjunct, or otherwise “island-like” domains. Classic analyses of Serbian report especially clear restrictions on extracting wh-adjuncts from factive complements, although later work finds that judgments vary with the predicate, complementizer, and context. Learners should not treat every embedded clause as transparent or every factive complement as uniformly opaque.

Islands: where a gap becomes costly or impossible

An island is a constituent out of which extraction is restricted. The exact theoretical boundaries are debated, and acceptability can improve with context, but three practical danger zones are stable:

  • a relative clause inside a noun phrase;
  • an adjunct clause such as a reason or condition;
  • one member of a coordination when the parallel member is left behind.

❌ Кога си упознао човека који познаје?

Incorrect — кога has been extracted from inside a relative clause, leaving the object position of познаје empty.

A natural repair uses a detached topic plus a resumptive clitic inside the relative clause:

✅ Што се тиче Николе, упознао сам човека који га познаје.

As for Nikola, I met the man who knows him. (male speaker)

This is resumption, not movement: Николе introduces the discourse topic, while га overtly occupies the object position inside the relative clause. If the lower position follows a preposition, Serbian instead needs the appropriate full pronoun.

Coordination requires parallel treatment.

❌ Коју је књигу Ана купила и часопис?

Incorrect — the question extracts only one member from the coordination ‘a book and a magazine.’

✅ Шта је Ана купила, књигу или часопис?

What did Ana buy, a book or a magazine?

The repair questions the whole alternative rather than removing one conjunct. Some apparent island violations become better under ellipsis or a special discourse setup, but they are not a safe productive model.

Left-branch extraction inside a noun phrase

Serbian can separate an interrogative or focused modifier from its noun in patterns unavailable in English.

Каква је Петар купио кола?

What kind of car did Petar buy? (literally: ‘What-kind did Petar buy car?’)

Interrogative каква agrees with neuter plural кола even though other clause material intervenes. This is not a license to detach any adjective. Agreement, noun-phrase structure, the number of competing modifiers, and locality restrict the construction.

A full-phrase question is always available and is often stylistically safer:

Каква кола је Петар купио?

What kind of car did Petar buy? (whole noun phrase fronted)

The contrast also reveals clitic placement. In the separated version, је follows first word каква; in the full-phrase version, it follows каква кола. Advanced first-word placement and extraction converge on the surface, but they should not be confused analytically.

Topic fronting is not necessarily extraction

Serbian frequently establishes a topic with што се тиче + genitive “as for.” An overt pronoun or noun then resumes the role in the main clause; a preposition requires a full pronoun.

Што се тиче новог уговора, о њему ћемо разговарати после паузе.

As for the new contract, we will discuss it after the break.

The topic phrase is outside the core argument position. Prepositional о њему is pronounced and fulfills the verb’s government. Calling this free extraction would miss both the syntax and the pause after the detached topic.

Compare the clitic-host calculation on The Second-Position Rule and the intonational analysis on Prosodic Constituency and Second Position.

This strategy is neutral in careful speech and writing when a long or embedded dependency would be cumbersome. Repeated resumptives without a clear discourse need can sound heavy. In (literary) prose, more elaborate fronting and discontinuous noun phrases occur, but their prosody and context are part of their license; they are not automatically neutral conversation.

Focus, prosody, and accidental meaning changes

Овај извештај је Милица послала директору.

As for this report, Milica sent it to the director. (topic reading in context)

БАШ ОВАЈ ИЗВЕШТАЈ је Милица послала директору, не нацрт.

It was THIS VERY REPORT that Milica sent to the director, not the draft. (capitals show contrastive stress for teaching only)

The same initial case form can be topic or focus. Ordinary Serbian spelling does not capitalize whole phrases to mark prosody; the capitals here are an explicit teaching notation. In real writing, баш, управо, a contrast phrase, or surrounding context does the work.

💡
Never label a fronted constituent “emphatic” without a context. Supply the question it answers, the alternative it rejects, or the topic it resumes.

A dependency diagnostic

Before fronting an expression, check:

  1. What case or preposition does its semantic position require?
  2. Is there a genuine gap, or does an overt pronoun resume the topic?
  3. Does the path cross a relative, adjunct, subject, or coordinate island?
  4. Which clause owns each clitic cluster?
  5. Does the fronted phrase act as topic, wh-focus, or contrastive focus?

Коме си рекао да ће му директор послати одговор?

Who did you tell that the director would send him a reply?

This sentence contains коме as the matrix recipient and embedded му as the recipient of послати; the two can refer to the same person. It is not extraction of коме from the lower clause because the lower argument position is overtly filled. Compare Коме си рекао да ће директор послати одговор?, where context must determine whether коме belongs to рекао and the lower recipient remains unexpressed. Overt case marking does not remove structural ambiguity by itself.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build three questions

From Милица је послала уговор адвокату, ask separately for the sender, the thing sent, and the recipient. Then ask a multiple wh-question and mark the host of every clitic.

Task 2: Repair an island

Create an unacceptable attempt to extract a prepositional complement from a relative clause. Repair it with што се тиче + genitive and a full resumptive pronoun, then explain why the repair is not the same dependency.

Common Mistakes

❌ Је ко послао коначну верзију?

Incorrect — Serbian fronts interrogative ко, which then hosts clitic је.

✅ Ко је послао коначну верзију?

Who sent the final version?

❌ Кога мислиш ће Ана позвати?

Incorrect — the embedded future clause needs да, which hosts ће.

✅ Кога мислиш да ће Ана позвати?

Who do you think Ana will invite?

❌ Што се тиче Иване, разговарали смо са јуче.

Incorrect — a detached topic does not fill the complement position after са; a full resumptive pronoun is required.

✅ Што се тиче Иване, разговарали смо с њом јуче.

As for Ivana, we spoke with her yesterday.

❌ Скупу је Ана купила ову књигу.

Incorrect — adjective скупу cannot be extracted while the preceding demonstrative ову is left behind inside the noun phrase.

✅ Ову скупу књигу је Ана купила, а не ону јефтинију.

Ana bought this expensive book, not that cheaper one.

Key Takeaways

  • Fronting changes the left edge and therefore the host of the clitic cluster.
  • Serbian fronts wh-phrases and can front several of them, but their ordering is conditioned.
  • Long-distance dependencies cross selected complement clauses more readily than relative, adjunct, and coordinate islands.
  • Resumption uses an overt full form inside the difficult domain and is not the same as extraction.
  • Some left-branch extraction is possible in Serbian, but agreement, structure, prosody, and locality constrain it.
  • Topic and contrastive focus can have the same surface order; context and prominence distinguish them.
