Clitics: The Little Words That Run Serbian

Clitics are short grammatical words that cannot normally carry their own stress. They lean phonologically on a neighboring word while still doing essential syntactic work: they build tenses, express unstressed objects, mark reflexivity, or form questions. In Serbian, most of the clitics on this page are enclitics: they occur in an early “second-position” cluster and are pronounced together with preceding material.

How to recognize a clitic

A Serbian clitic has three practical properties:

  1. it is unstressed in neutral speech and cannot normally stand alone;
  2. it seeks an early position in its clause rather than remaining beside the word it belongs with semantically;
  3. when several clitics occur, they form one ordered cluster.

Јутрос сам им предао потписану изјаву.

This morning I handed them the signed statement. (male speaker)

Сам supplies first-person perfect tense and им identifies the recipients. Neither is emphasized. Although им belongs semantically with предао, it appears with сам near the beginning of the clause.

Compare a stressable full word:

ЊОЈ сам послао коначну верзију, не њему.

I sent the final version to HER, not to him. (male speaker; contrastive stress)

Full dative њој can bear contrastive stress and open the clause. Clitic јој cannot do that job. Serbian spelling does not normally use capitals to mark focus; they appear here only to make the spoken contrast visible.

💡
If a short form quietly retrieves familiar information, it is probably a clitic. If it is contrasted, corrected, used after a preposition, or given as a standalone answer, Serbian needs a full stressable form.

The main clitic families

FunctionFormsTypical job
present clitics of битисам, си, је, смо, сте, суcopula; perfect auxiliary
future-I cliticsћу, ћеш, ће, ћемо, ћете, ћеfuture auxiliary
conditional cliticsбих, би, би, бисмо, бисте, биconditional construction
dative object cliticsми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, имunstressed recipient/experiencer
accusative/genitive object cliticsме, те, га, је/ју, нас, вас, ихunstressed object or governed genitive
reflexive cliticсеreflexive, lexical, impersonal, passive uses
question cliticлиyes/no or embedded question

The identical-looking forms нас and вас can be unstressed clitics or stressed full forms. Position, context, and pronunciation distinguish them. As a first map, the cluster runs ли → auxiliary except је → dative → accusative/genitive → се → auxiliary је. Feminine accusative је/ју, exceptional auxiliary је, and the details of larger clusters require dedicated treatment; see Clitic Pronoun Forms and the je/ju Problem and Clitic Cluster Order.

Auxiliary clitics build verb forms

The short forms of бити build the ordinary perfect with an l-participle.

Стигли смо пре него што је почела киша.

We arrived before the rain started.

Смо marks first-person plural; је marks third-person singular in the subordinate clause. The participles стигли and почела contribute lexical meaning and agreement.

The short forms derived from хтети build future I with an infinitive. Contemporary Serbian also widely uses the same clitics with да + present, especially in speech; both patterns and their distribution are covered under Future I.

Следеће недеље ћемо вам послати нови уговор.

Next week we will send you the new contract.

Conditional clitics combine with an l-participle.

Радо бих ти помогао, али вечерас нисам слободан.

I would gladly help you, but I'm not free tonight. (male speaker)

These unstressed forms contrast with full, stressable јесам and хоћу. Negative нисам, ниси, није… and нећу, нећеш… are fused finite words, not members of the positive second-position cluster in the same way. They can begin a clause naturally.

Нисам им обећао да ћу доћи.

I did not promise them that I would come. (male speaker)

Initial нисам is fine; initial positive сам is not. The embedded future clitic ћу has the conjunction да as its early anchor.

Object clitics retrieve familiar participants

An unstressed object pronoun normally refers to someone or something already active in the conversation.

Где је Никола? Видео сам га малопре код улаза.

Where is Nikola? I saw him a moment ago by the entrance.

Ана још нема распоред; послаћу јој га вечерас.

Ana still doesn't have the schedule; I'll send it to her tonight.

In the second sentence, dative јој is the recipient and accusative га refers to masculine распоред. The two pronouns form a cluster instead of remaining in English-like positions after the verb.

Clitics cannot follow prepositions. Use a full pronoun after без, код, са, о, за, према and other prepositions.

Разговарао сам с њом, а касније сам јој послао белешке.

I spoke with her, and later I sent her the notes. (male speaker)

Њом is full because it follows с; јој is a neutral dative clitic. For the full choice system, see Clitic vs Full Pronoun Forms.

Се is one form with several constructions

Се is always unstressed, but it is not always a direct translation of English oneself. It can mark an ordinary reflexive relation, belong lexically to a verb, or participate in impersonal and passive-like constructions.

Деца су се сама спремила за школу.

The children got themselves ready for school.

Марко се нада добрим вестима.

Marko is hoping for good news.

Овде се карте купују на аутомату.

Tickets are bought here at the machine.

In надати се, се is part of the dictionary construction; deleting it changes or destroys the verb. In the last example, се supports a general passive-like reading. Its placement remains clitic placement even when its semantic role differs.

Ли forms questions

Question clitic ли follows a suitable host and cannot normally begin a neutral standard question.

Да ли сте већ добили потврду?

Have you already received confirmation?

Јесте ли већ добили потврду?

Have you already received confirmation?

In the first pattern, да hosts ли, and auxiliary сте follows. In the second, full question form јесте precedes ли. Bare initial Ли сте…? is impossible. The choice between question patterns belongs to question syntax; the key clitic fact is that ли needs preceding phonological support.

“Second position” is structural, not word number two

The safest beginner baseline is to place the cluster after the first complete constituent.

Моја старија сестра ми је јуче донела кључеве.

My older sister brought me the keys yesterday.

The first constituent is the three-word subject моја старија сестра. The cluster ми је follows that phrase, so its first clitic is not the second written word. A marked alternative can place the cluster after an appropriate first word inside an initial phrase, but that depends on syntax, prosody, and discourse. The Second-Position Rule explains the practical choices.

Clitics also calculate position inside their own clause.

Милица каже да ће нам се сутра придружити.

Milica says that she will join us tomorrow.

Notice that каже is a stressed lexical verb, not a clitic. The subordinate clause begins with да, followed by its own cluster ће нам се. Short spelling alone never proves clitic status.

💡
Find clause boundaries before placing anything. When a finite clause contains clitics, it builds its own early cluster; a clitic in an embedded да clause does not join the cluster of the main clause.

One proposition with different information structure

Милица ми је јуче послала извештај.

Milica sent me the report yesterday. (neutral subject-first presentation)

Извештај ми је јуче послала Милица.

As for the report, Milica sent it to me yesterday. (report as topic; Milica identified as focus)

Јуче ми је Милица послала извештај.

Yesterday, Milica sent me the report. (yesterday as the time frame)

The participants and event stay constant, but the opening constituent changes the message organization. The cluster ми је follows the chosen opening. This is why Serbian order is flexible but not free: moving material changes topic, focus, and the clitic host.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Classify the short form

In five original sentences, identify one auxiliary clitic, one dative object clitic, one accusative object clitic, reflexive се, and question ли. State what each contributes and which preceding word or phrase supports it.

Task 2: Full or clitic?

Create pairs for “to her” in a neutral continuation, a contrastive correction, and after са. Use јој, њој, and њом appropriately, then move the neutral clause behind an initial time phrase without changing the cluster internally.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сам јој послао поруку јутрос.

Incorrect — positive auxiliary clitic сам cannot open a neutral clause.

✅ Јутрос сам јој послао поруку.

I sent her a message this morning. (male speaker)

❌ Са је разговарам сваког дана.

Incorrect — a clitic cannot follow a preposition; use the full instrumental form њом.

✅ Са њом разговарам сваког дана.

I talk with her every day.

❌ МИ је послао одговор, не теби.

Incorrect — clitic ми cannot bear contrastive stress; use full мени.

✅ МЕНИ је послао одговор, не теби.

He sent the reply to ME, not to you. (capitals show contrastive stress for teaching only)

❌ Ли сте проверили све прилоге?

Incorrect — question clitic ли cannot begin a neutral standard clause.

✅ Да ли сте проверили све прилоге?

Have you checked all the attachments?

Key Takeaways

  • Clitics are unstressed grammatical words that require phonological support and gather early in their clause.
  • The inventory includes auxiliary, object-pronoun, reflexive, and question clitics.
  • Full pronouns carry contrast and follow prepositions; object clitics retrieve neutral, familiar referents.
  • Positive auxiliary clitics cannot normally begin a clause, while fused negative forms such as нисам can.
  • “Second position” is a structural and prosodic location, not mechanically the second written word.
  • Learn internal cluster order separately; first identify the clitics and the clause that contains them.
