The Comparative

Serbian normally expresses “more + adjective” with a single comparative adjective: новији “newer,” млађи “younger,” лепши “more beautiful.” Three suffix patterns—-ији, -ји, -ши—build these forms, sometimes changing the final consonant of the positive adjective.

Unlike English more interesting, ordinary Serbian does not place an invariant word before an unchanged adjective. The comparative itself declines, agreeing with its noun in gender, number, and case whether it stands before the noun or in the predicate.

The productive -ији pattern

-Ији is the most productive and transparent comparative suffix. It is particularly common with longer adjectives, although syllable count alone does not predict every form.

Овај модел је новији, али је претходни био поузданији.

This model is newer, but the previous one was more reliable.

Пронашли смо јефтинији стан ближе факултету.

We found a cheaper apartment closer to the university.

Други део подкаста био је занимљивији од првог.

The second part of the podcast was more interesting than the first.

In паметан → паметнији, the а of masculine nominative паметан is fleeting; compare feminine positive паметна. The comparative attaches to the stable stem паметн-, not to the complete dictionary form. Learning паметан, паметна, паметнији as a set prevents паметанији.

💡
Use -ији as the productive default only after checking the dictionary form. It explains many new comparatives, but high-frequency short adjectives often use -ји, -ши, or a suppletive stem.

-ји triggers consonant changes

The suffix -ји historically contains ј, which combines with a final stem consonant. Modern spelling shows the result, not a mechanically appended sequence.

Моја сестра је млађа од мене, али је физички јача.

Ужи пролаз је краћи, али ноћу није безбеднији.

The narrower passage is shorter, but it isn’t safer at night.

После поправке мотор ради тише и троши мање горива.

After the repair, the engine runs more quietly and uses less fuel.

In the last sentence, тише functions as an adverb and therefore does not agree; adjective comparison and adverb comparison share many stems. The dedicated page on comparing adverbs separates the two functions.

The changes in виши and ужи cannot be recovered by simply attaching written -ји. This is a genuine memorization point. Record common adjectives as three-item sets: висок — висока — виши, узак — уска — ужи.

-ши belongs to three common adjectives

Only three standard comparative adjectives use -ши directly:

PositiveComparativeSuperlative
леплепшинајлепши
лаклакшинајлакши
мекмекшинајмекши

Овај јастук је мекши, а онај други је лакши за одржавање.

This pillow is softer, while the other one is easier to maintain.

Do not expand -ши into a productive rule. Forms such as новши and старши are not standard comparatives of нов and стар; use новији, старији.

The comparative agrees like a long adjective

Comparatives use the long/definite-type adjective paradigm. They have no corresponding short masculine form: новији, not новиј; млађи, not млађ. This morphological fact does not mean that a comparative automatically translates with English “the.” Serbian has no articles.

Case/numberMasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominative singularновији телефонновија зградановије насељеновији телефони
Genitive singularновијег телефонановије зграденовијег насељановијих телефона
Dative/locative singularновијем телефонуновијој зградиновијем насељуновијим телефонима
Accusative singularновији телефонновију зградуновије насељеновије телефоне
Instrumental singularновијим телефономновијом зградомновијим насељемновијим телефонима

The masculine accusative in the table is inanimate. With a person, animacy gives a genitive-shaped accusative: упознао сам млађег колегу.

О млађој кандидаткињи знамо више него о старијем кандидату.

We know more about the younger female candidate than about the older male candidate.

Изабрали су искуснију кандидаткињу и млађег асистента.

They selected the more experienced female candidate and the younger assistant.

The comparative identifies its referent through agreement: feminine accusative искуснију belongs with кандидаткињу, while masculine animate accusative млађег belongs with асистента.

💡
After forming the comparative stem, decline the entire noun phrase. English leaves “younger” unchanged; Serbian distinguishes млађи колега, млађу колегиницу, с млађим колегама.

Attributive and predicative use

Before a noun, the comparative selects a member of a category: бржи воз “a faster train.” In the predicate, it assigns the comparison directly: воз је бржи “the train is faster.” Agreement remains in both positions.

Бржи воз полази касније, али стиже двадесет минута раније.

The faster train leaves later but arrives twenty minutes earlier.

Ова рута је краћа, а ове стазе су безбедније после кише.

This route is shorter, and these paths are safer after rain.

The normal attributive position is before the noun. Moving an adjective after the noun can create emphasis, contrast, or a marked literary rhythm; it does not reproduce an English a/the distinction. Definite and indefinite adjective forms explains the limited modern long-short contrast in positive adjectives.

Naming the comparison standard

The common nominal pattern is од + genitive:

Нови мост је шири од старог, али је прилаз ужи од коловоза.

The new bridge is wider than the old one, but the approach is narrower than the roadway.

Него is especially useful when comparing parallel clauses or constituents whose case is set by their role:

Милица је стрпљивија него Марко, али Марко брже доноси одлуке.

Milica is more patient than Marko, but Marko makes decisions faster.

After од, use genitive Марка; after него in this subject comparison, use nominative Марко. See него versus од for cases where the choice prevents ambiguity.

What normally cannot be compared

Qualitative adjectives such as брз, тих, занимљив describe properties with degrees. Relational adjectives such as дрвени “wooden” and градски “municipal/urban” classify something and normally do not form дрвенији or градскији. Speakers can deliberately reinterpret some relational adjectives qualitatively—“more cinematic,” “friendlier”—but that meaning shift is lexical, not a license to compare every adjective.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the suffix and agree

Form comparative noun phrases from паметан студент, млада лекарка, лако решење, and мек јастук.

Паметнији студент је предложио лакше решење, а млађа лекарка је донела мекши јастук.

The smarter student proposed an easier solution, while the younger doctor brought a softer pillow.

Task 2: Put the same comparative into four roles

Use старији колега as subject, animate object, genitive complement, and instrumental companion.

Старији колега долази; зовем старијег колегу; савет старијег колеге; путујем са старијим колегом.

The older colleague is coming; I’m calling the older colleague; the older colleague’s advice; I’m traveling with the older colleague.

Common Mistakes

Building an English-style analytic comparative

❌ Овај курс је више занимљив од претходног.

Incorrect — ordinary gradable занимљив forms the morphological comparative занимљивији.

✅ Овај курс је занимљивији од претходног.

This course is more interesting than the previous one.

Treating the comparative as invariant

❌ Тражимо јефтинији собу близу центра.

Incorrect — собу is feminine accusative, so the adjective must be јефтинију.

✅ Тражимо јефтинију собу близу центра.

We’re looking for a cheaper room near the center.

Attaching -ји without the consonant change

❌ Мој брат је младји, али је јакји од мене.

Incorrect — the standard comparatives are млађи and јачи.

✅ Мој брат је млађи, али је јачи од мене.

My brother is younger, but he is stronger than me.

Using nominative after од

❌ Овај сто је дужи од онај.

Incorrect — од governs genitive, so онај becomes оног.

✅ Овај сто је дужи од оног поред прозора.

This table is longer than the one by the window.

Key Takeaways

  • -Ији is the productive pattern: новији, паметнији, занимљивији.
  • -Ји triggers stem changes: млађи, дужи, бржи, јачи, тиши.
  • Only леп, лак, мек use -ши: лепши, лакши, мекши.
  • Comparative adjectives take long-form endings and agree fully in gender, number, case, and masculine animacy.
  • Use од + genitive for a nominal standard; него preserves the compared constituent’s syntactic case.
