Definite vs Indefinite Adjectives (long/short)

Many Serbian qualitative adjectives have two traditional forms: an indefinite, short form and a definite, long form. The contrast is clearest in the masculine nominative singular: нов стан has short нов, while нови стан has long нови. This is not simply Serbian spelling English a and the on an adjective. The system grew from a definiteness contrast, but modern meaning, syntax, lexical class, case, and usage all interact.

English speakers therefore need two complementary habits: recognize the clearest short–long contrast, and avoid forcing an article-like distinction where modern Serbian has neutralized it.

The Visible Contrast: Short нов and Long нови

For regular qualitative adjectives, the masculine nominative singular displays the contrast directly.

MeaningShort / indefiniteLong / definite
newновнови
youngмладмлади
goodдобардобри
brightсветаосветли
quietмиранмирни

The long form is not always made by merely adding -и to what you see. A fleeting а may disappear, and final л may alternate with о in the short form: добар — добри, миран — мирни, светао — светли. Learn both citation forms when the stem changes.

У чекаоницу је ушао млад лекар.

A young doctor entered the waiting room.

Млади лекар је одмах позвао следећег пацијента.

The young doctor immediately called the next patient.

The first sentence introduces an unanchored member of a class: some young doctor. Once that doctor is established, млади лекар can identify the already accessible referent. This discourse contrast reflects the historical core of the two forms.

💡
Use masculine nominative singular phrases to hear the system clearly: млад лекар — млади лекар, нов рачунар — нови рачунар. In many other forms the distinction is either less visible or absent.

Quality Versus Identification

The short form characteristically ascribes a quality: it answers “what is it like?” It is normal in an ordinary adjectival predicate after бити.

Стан је светао, али је ходник мрачан.

The apartment is bright, but the hallway is dark.

Нови комшија је љубазан и веома стрпљив.

The new neighbor is kind and very patient.

Here нови identifies the neighbor as the new one, while predicative љубазан and стрпљив state qualities. A long form used after the copula generally receives a different analysis: it identifies a person or thing, or stands for an omitted noun.

Овај капут је нов, а онај је стари.

This coat is new, and that one is the old one.

In овај капут је нов, short нов is a property. In онај је стари, long стари is substantivized: “the old one,” with капут understood. The long form has not become a normal descriptive predicate.

Attributively, the short form can introduce or classify, while the long form can identify a contextually recoverable referent.

Тражимо простран стан близу школе.

We're looking for a spacious apartment near the school.

Пространи стан који смо јуче видели већ је издат.

The spacious apartment that we saw yesterday has already been rented out.

This contrast is useful, but it is not mechanically obligatory in every contemporary context. Determiners, intonation, word order, lexical meaning, and discourse often carry more of the referential work.

Why This Is Not an Article System

Serbian has no grammatical articles corresponding to English a and the. A bare noun may be definite or indefinite from context, and adjective form cannot translate the English article word for word.

Most importantly, modern oblique-case usage strongly favors the long adjectival endings even with nonspecific referents:

Тражим доброг електричара који може да дође данас.

I'm looking for a good electrician who can come today.

Доброг електричара is animate accusative singular and clearly nonspecific, yet доброг is the ordinary contemporary form. The historically short animate accusative добра survives in limited elevated or deliberately traditional styles, but it is not the productive conversational equivalent of English a good electrician.

Similarly, feminine and plural forms do not normally show a separate short–long ending contrast:

Упознали смо љубазну власницу и њене стрпљиве сараднике.

We met the kind owner and her patient associates.

The feminine accusative љубазну and masculine animate plural стрпљиве express agreement, but their endings do not independently announce English-style definiteness.

💡
Do not ask only “Would English use a or the?” First ask whether Serbian is using a predicative quality, an identifying attribute, a demonstrative phrase, or an oblique case whose modern form has been leveled.

Agreement Still Applies to Both Forms

Whether an adjective is historically short or long, it agrees with its noun in gender, number, and case. Masculine accusative singular also follows animacy.

EnvironmentPhraseWhat controls the form
masculine nominativeовај стари мостdemonstrative + identifiable referent
masculine animate accusativeоног старог професораaccusative = genitive for animate masculine
feminine instrumentalса новом директоркомfeminine singular instrumental
neuter locativeу новом насељуneuter singular locative
plural genitiveбез старих докуменатаgenitive plural across the phrase

Разговарали смо са оном новом директорком после састанка.

We spoke with that new director after the meeting.

The demonstrative, adjective, and noun all carry instrumental singular agreement: оном новом директорком. The long–short question never cancels case agreement.

Adjectives That Do Not Offer a Free Choice

The opposition belongs primarily to qualitative adjectives. Many relational adjectives have only the long type, especially forms in -ски, -шки, -чки, -ни, -њи, -ји: градски превоз, зимски капут, данашњи састанак, дечји лекар. Comparatives and superlatives likewise have long-type morphology: бољи, најбржи.

Данашњи градски превоз ради по измењеном реду вожње.

Today's public transport is running on a revised timetable.

Possessive adjectives in -ов, -ев, -ин, by contrast, are traditionally classified with the indefinite type in their basic form: Марков кључ, Милошев ранац, Анин телефон. Their modern oblique forms often use the productive adjectival endings; see Possessive Adjectives.

Fixed terms may also select a form lexically. Црвени крст is a proper name, and дежурни лекар identifies an institutional role. You must learn such expressions as units rather than recomputing definiteness each time.

Дежурни лекар ће вас примити после девет.

The doctor on duty will see you after nine.

Practice Task 1: Follow the Discourse

Choose short or long in the masculine nominative and explain why.

На вратима је стајао непознат човек. Непознати човек је држао пакет у рукама.

An unknown man was standing at the door. The unknown man was holding a package. Answer: short непознат introduces him; long непознати retrieves the same man.

Купили смо половни сто, али је сто сасвим очуван.

We bought a secondhand table, but the table is completely well preserved. Answer: lexical половни has the long type; predicative очуван is short and states a quality.

Practice Task 2: Separate Form from English Articles

Identify why the adjective has its form without translating a/the mechanically.

Потребан нам је искусан преводилац, али још нисмо нашли доброг кандидата.

We need an experienced translator, but we still haven't found a good candidate. Answer: short nominative искусан states the required quality; ordinary modern animate accusative is доброг despite the nonspecific meaning.

Онај високи ормар не може да прође кроз уска врата.

That tall wardrobe cannot fit through the narrow doorway. Answer: demonstrative онај anchors the referent, so masculine nominative високи is long; уска agrees with the neuter plural noun врата.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the long form for an ordinary predicative quality.

❌ Мост је стари, па му је потребна поправка.

Incorrect for a simple property — стари means ‘the old one’; use short стар after је.

✅ Мост је стар, па му је потребна поправка.

The bridge is old, so it needs repairs.

2. Using a short form after a demonstrative in an identifying phrase.

❌ Овај стар мост је затворен за саобраћај.

Incorrect in the neutral standard pattern — the demonstrative identifies the bridge, so use long стари.

✅ Овај стари мост је затворен за саобраћај.

This old bridge is closed to traffic.

3. Treating the adjective as invariant.

❌ Купила је црвен хаљину за свечаност.

Incorrect — feminine accusative хаљину requires црвену.

✅ Купила је црвену хаљину за свечаност.

She bought a red dress for the ceremony.

4. Forcing a short oblique form merely because English has a.

❌ Тражимо искусна инжењера за овај пројекат.

Incorrect in ordinary contemporary Serbian — animate accusative requires искусног here; the English indefinite article does not force the historical short ending.

✅ Тражимо искусног инжењера за овај пројекат.

We're looking for an experienced engineer for this project.

5. Assuming post-nominal position creates definiteness.

❌ Треба ми стан светао близу центра.

Unnatural neutral word order — Serbian normally places this simple attributive adjective before the noun; moving it does not encode English-style definiteness.

✅ Треба ми светао стан близу центра.

I need a bright apartment near the center.

Key Takeaways

  • The clearest live contrast is masculine nominative singular: нов versus нови.
  • Short forms normally state a quality and are standard in ordinary qualitative predicates; long forms commonly identify or classify.
  • The system is historically connected with definiteness but is not an article system.
  • Modern oblique cases often use long adjectival endings even for nonspecific referents.
  • Many relational adjectives have only long-type forms, while possessives in -ов, -ев, -ин are traditionally short-type.
  • Form choice never overrides gender, number, case, or masculine animacy agreement.
