Writing Words Together or Separately

Serbian spacing is grammatical: it shows whether the writer understands something as one word, a clitic, or a phrase. Pronunciation alone cannot always decide. Не знам “I do not know” is two words, нећу “I will not” is one, and напамет “by heart” differs from на памет “to mind” even though the sounds meet in nearly the same way.

The practical principle is to identify the construction before deciding where the space goes. This matters equally in Cyrillic and Latin: не знам / ne znam, нећу / neću, and ни са ким / ni sa kim have identical word boundaries in both scripts.

Negation with Verbs: Usually Separate

The negative particle не is normally written separately from a finite verb. English frequently contracts do not to don’t, but Serbian does not use punctuation to join the particle to an ordinary verb.

Не знам где су ми кључеви.

I don’t know where my keys are.

Она не ради петком, па ћу је позвати сутра.

She doesn’t work on Fridays, so I’ll call her tomorrow.

Нисмо га видели и не можемо да потврдимо причу.

We didn’t see him and cannot confirm the story.

The third example contains both patterns. Не можемо is the regular separate spelling. Нисмо, however, belongs to the negative present of бити and is written as one word.

The high-frequency joined forms must be learned as a small set:

FunctionCyrillicLatin
negative present of битинисам, ниси, није, нисмо, нисте, нисуnisam, nisi, nije, nismo, niste, nisu
negative present of хтетинећу, нећеш, неће, нећемо, нећете, нећеneću, nećeš, neće, nećemo, nećete, neće
negative present of иматинемам, немаш, нема...nemam, nemaš, nema...
negative imperative particleнемој, немојмо, немојтеnemoj, nemojmo, nemojte

Нећу каснити, али немам времена за ручак.

I won’t be late, but I don’t have time for lunch.

Немој да шаљеш поруку док возиш.

Don’t send a message while driving.

💡
Use “не + ordinary verb = two words” as the default, then memorize нисам, нећу, немам, and немој as the compact exception set.

Negated Nouns, Adjectives, and Adverbs

With nouns, adjectives, participial adjectives, and many adverbs, не- often forms a new lexical opposite and is written together: неправда “injustice,” незадовољан “dissatisfied,” непознат “unknown,” неочекивано “unexpectedly.” Here не- behaves as a prefix, not as the separate verbal particle.

Купац је незадовољан јер је пакет стигао неоштећен, али непотпун.

The customer is dissatisfied because the package arrived undamaged but incomplete.

Неочекивано смо добили повољнију понуду.

We unexpectedly received a better offer.

When the writer rejects one description and supplies another, Serbian often negates the copula instead of building a new prefixed opposite. This is a clause-level contrast, not a reason to split an established adjective mechanically.

Решење није неизводљиво, него само скупо.

The solution is not infeasible; it is merely expensive.

Извештај није потпун, него намерно скраћен.

The report is not complete but deliberately shortened.

The second construction contrasts two predicates. The neutral noun phrase непотпун извештај “an incomplete report” still writes its prefixed adjective together. Meaning and syntax, not merely sound, select the structure.

Particles and Short Words

The question particle ли is a separate word: да ли, је ли, хоћеш ли, бисмо ли. The informal spoken spelling је л’ uses an apostrophe to mark omission; neutral edited prose prefers је ли or да ли.

Да ли си му већ послала адресу?

Have you already sent him the address?

Хоћеш ли доћи раније ако завршиш на време?

Will you come earlier if you finish on time?

The free-choice particle год is also separate: ко год “whoever,” шта год “whatever,” где год “wherever,” кад год “whenever.” Fused forms such as штогод “something” and кадгод “sometimes” also exist with indefinite meanings, so meaning—not speaking speed—decides the boundary. By contrast, the superlative element нај- is joined to the adjective or adverb: најбољи, најбрже, најједноставнији.

Ко год стигне први, нека резервише најбољи сто.

Whoever arrives first should reserve the best table.

Future I has its own high-frequency boundary rule. After an infinitive ending in -ти, the auxiliary is attached and the final -ти drops: писати → писаћу, радити → радићемо. Infinitives ending in -ћи keep the infinitive intact and the auxiliary separate: доћи ћу, наћи ћемо. The full pattern belongs on the Future I spelling page.

Писаћу ти вечерас, а доћи ћу у суботу.

I’ll write to you tonight, and I’ll come on Saturday.

Prepositions and Pronouns

Prepositions are separate from the pronoun they govern: са мном, код мене, пред њим, за њу, о томе. The form мном appears only after a preposition, but that dependence does not turn the two items into one written word.

Пођи са мном, па ћемо касније свратити код ње.

Come with me, and then we’ll stop by her place later.

Negative pronouns require special attention. Without a preposition they are joined: нико, ништа, ничији, никакав. When a preposition is present, it normally stands between ни and the pronoun: ни са ким, ни о чему, ни од кога, ни за чији.

Нико није разговарао ни са ким из управе.

Nobody spoke with anyone from management.

Ни о чему важном нисмо одлучили.

We did not decide on anything important.

English gives little help here because nobody is one word while with nobody stays a simple prepositional phrase. Serbian double negation and the interruption of the negative pronoun are grammatical requirements, not stylistic choices.

💡
When a preposition governs a negative pronoun, build the sequence as ни + preposition + pronoun: ни са ким, never нисаким or са ником in neutral standard usage.

Compound Adverbs Versus Prepositional Phrases

Some combinations have lexicalized as one adverb. Others remain transparent phrases. A few pairs change meaning with the boundary:

Joined formMeaningSeparate phraseMeaning
напамет / napametby heartна памет / na pametto mind
зато / zatotherefore; for that reasonза то / za tofor that
одједном / odjednomsuddenly; all at onceод једног / od jednogfrom one
уколико / ukolikoif; provided thatу колико / u kolikoat what number or time

Научила је цео говор напамет, али јој је једно име испало из главе.

She learned the whole speech by heart, but one name slipped her mind.

Није ми пало на памет да ће састанак трајати три сата.

It never occurred to me that the meeting would last three hours.

Прочитај последњи пасус наглас, па ћемо предлог ставити на гласање.

Read the final paragraph aloud, and then we’ll put the proposal to a vote.

Зато сам и гласао за то.

That is precisely why I voted for it.

Уколико касниш, јави ми у колико сати стижеш.

If you’re running late, tell me what time you’ll arrive.

Frequent joined adverbs include отприлике, углавном, заувек, and понекад. Frequent separate expressions include у ствари, на пример, без обзира на, пре свега, за сада, and од тада. There is no reliable acoustic trick for the entire inventory; frequent expressions must be stored with their boundary.

Paired-Script Proofreading Task

Convert the following message into the other script while preserving spaces, then compare it with the corrected version. The errors are boundaries, not pronunciation:

❌ Незнам дали ћеш доћи, али нико несме да разговара ниским из штампе.

Incorrect — не знам, да ли, не сме, and ни са ким must be written with the standard boundaries.

✅ Не знам да ли ћеш доћи, али нико не сме да разговара ни са ким из штампе.

I don’t know whether you’ll come, but nobody may speak with anyone from the press.

The Latin conversion is: Ne znam da li ćeš doći, ali niko ne sme da razgovara ni sa kim iz štampe. Notice that ћеш → ćeš, доћи → doći, and штампе → štampe change script, while every space remains in the same place. Transliteration must not be used to “repair” grammar silently.

For dictation, ask a speaker to read нећу, не радим, нико, ни са ким, напамет, and на памет inside full sentences. First write what you hear; then label each item as a negative verb, prefixed word, pronoun phrase, adverb, or prepositional phrase. That label is the reason for the boundary.

Common Mistakes

Joining regular verbal negation

❌ Незнам зашто он неради данас.

Incorrect — regular verbal negation is separate: не знам and не ради.

✅ Не знам зашто он не ради данас.

I don’t know why he isn’t working today.

Separating a lexicalized negative form

❌ Не ћу стићи јер не мам ауто.

Incorrect — нећу and немам are joined exception forms.

✅ Нећу стићи јер немам ауто.

I won’t make it because I don’t have a car.

Joining the question particle

❌ Дали знаш где је нај ближа апотека?

Incorrect — да ли is separate, while the superlative најближа is joined.

✅ Да ли знаш где је најближа апотека?

Do you know where the nearest pharmacy is?

Mishandling a preposition inside a negative pronoun

❌ Нисам причала са ником о томе.

Incorrect in neutral standard Serbian — use ни са ким with the preposition inside the negative expression.

✅ Нисам причала ни са ким о томе.

I didn’t speak with anyone about it.

Confusing an adverb with a literal phrase

❌ Цео број телефона знам на памет.

Incorrect for ‘by heart’ — the lexicalized adverb is напамет.

✅ Цео број телефона знам напамет.

I know the entire phone number by heart.

💡
Proofread boundaries in two passes: first find grammatical small words such as не, ли, and prepositions; then check memorized adverbs and future forms. Trying to hear every boundary in one pass is unreliable.

Key Takeaways

  • Write regular не + verb separately, but memorize нисам, нећу, немам, and немој as joined forms.
  • Write ли and free-choice год separately; join superlative нај-.
  • Prepositions remain separate, and negative pronouns split around them: ни са ким, ни о чему.
  • Meaning distinguishes pairs such as напамет–на памет and зато–за то.
  • Cyrillic and Latin use exactly the same word boundaries; conversion changes letters, not grammar.
