Jotation in Spelling

Jotation (јотовање) is the historical and morphological change produced when a consonant comes into contact with ј or a j-containing ending. The original consonant and ј merge into a palatal or postalveolar consonant: д + ј → ђ, for example. Modern Serbian spelling normally writes the resulting sound, not the two historical ingredients, so the alternation appears inside related-word sets such as млад–млађи and камен–камење.

The rule is highly systematic, but it is not a command to change every visible consonant before every ј. Morphological boundaries, learned formations, and established spelling decide whether jotation has occurred.

The Six Core Outcomes

The central correspondences are the following:

Underlying contactResult in CyrillicResult in LatinRelated-word set
т + јћćцвет — цвеће / cvet — cveće
д + јђđмлад — млађи / mlad — mlađi
с + јшšносити — ношење / nositi — nošenje
з + јжžпазити — пажња / paziti — pažnja
л + јљljсо — сољу / so — solju
н + јњnjкамен — камење / kamen — kamenje

The left side is an analysis, not the spelling learners should produce. You write млађи, not младји; пажња, not пазња; and камење, not каменје in Cyrillic. Serbian Latin then converts each resulting letter exactly: ђ → đ, ш → š, ж → ž, љ → lj, њ → nj.

У пролеће је цвеће на тераси најлепше.

In spring, the flowers on the terrace are at their loveliest.

Мој млађи брат тражи мањи стан.

My younger brother is looking for a smaller apartment.

💡
Recover the related base to understand the spelling, but write the result you actually have: млад → млађи, not a visible sequence дј.

т + ј and д + ј: ћ and ђ, Not ч and џ

For English speakers, the most important discrimination is ћ/ć versus ч/č, and ђ/đ versus џ/dž. Jotation of т gives ћ/ć; jotation of д gives ђ/đ. The harder affricates ч/č and џ/dž are different phonemes and different letters.

Цвеће је стигло, али је један букет већ увенуо.

The flowers arrived, but one bouquet has already wilted.

Овај пут је краћи, али је онај безбеднији.

This route is shorter, but that one is safer.

In краћи, the family кратак–краћи displays т → ћ along with loss of the fleeting а. Jotation may therefore occur together with another alternation. A learner should compare whole related forms, not assume that every surface difference comes from one rule.

Нови модел је тврђи и нешто скупљи од старог.

The new model is harder and somewhat more expensive than the old one.

Млађа колегиница ће водити данашњи састанак.

A younger colleague will lead today’s meeting.

The adjective sets тврд–тврђи and млад–млађи show д + ј → ђ. In Latin, write tvrđi, mlađi. ASCII tvrdji and mladji fail to represent standard đ; tvrdži and mladži wrongly substitute dž.

с + ј and з + ј: ш and ж

Jotation also turns dental fricatives into postalveolar ones. The historical ј may no longer be visible as an independent segment, especially in derived nouns.

Base or related formJotated formAlternation
носити / nositiношење / nošenjeс → ш
мислити / mislitiмишљење / mišljenjeс → ш; л → љ
возити / vozitiвожња / vožnjaз → ж
пазити / pazitiпажња / pažnjaз → ж

После дугог размишљања променила је мишљење.

After thinking for a long time, she changed her opinion.

Обрати пажњу на саобраћај док прелазиш улицу.

Pay attention to the traffic while crossing the street.

Вожња до планине траје око два сата.

The drive to the mountain takes about two hours.

Forms such as мишљење involve a bundle of historical and derivational changes. It is useful to recognize мислити as a family member, but not useful to invent the spelling anew each time from a chain of guessed operations. Learn frequent derivational outputs as words, then use the alternation to organize them.

л + ј and н + ј: љ and њ

Cyrillic makes these outcomes visually unmistakable: љ and њ are single letters. Serbian Latin uses the single alphabetic letters lj and nj, each written with two characters. That difference between character count and letter count matters during conversion.

Додај још мало соли, али немој да претераш са сољу.

Add a little more salt, but don’t overdo the salt.

The instrumental сољу belongs to the set со–соли–сољу. Cyrillic writes љ; Latin writes solju, where lj represents the single sound and letter corresponding to љ.

Камење на стази је клизаво после кише.

The stones on the path are slippery after the rain.

Посекли су суве гране и сакупили грање.

They cut the dry branches and gathered the brushwood.

The sets камен–камење and грана–грање show н + ј → њ. Their Latin forms are kamen–kamenje and grana–granje. Writing Cyrillic каменје or гранје merely copies the Latin character sequence without converting the digraph.

💡
During Latin-to-Cyrillic conversion, process lj and nj as units when they represent Serbian letters: solju → сољу, kamenje → камење.

Why Visible Consonant + ј Does Not Always Change

Jotation belongs to particular morphological formations; it does not operate blindly across every boundary. The prefix-root boundary remains visible in одјек “echo” and подједнако “equally”: дј is written and pronounced as a consonant sequence, not changed to ђ.

Одјек музике чуо се из празне сале.

The echo of the music could be heard from the empty hall.

Обе понуде су подједнако добре.

Both offers are equally good.

Learned and foreign formations can likewise preserve sequences that resemble a potential trigger. The word инјекција contains нј, not њ; its Latin form injekcija must therefore return to Cyrillic as инјекција, not ињекција.

Лекар јој је дао инјекцију против болова.

The doctor gave her an injection for the pain.

This is the morphological limit of “write as you speak.” Serbian spelling follows the standard phonemic form, but the standard lexicon determines whether a particular boundary underwent jotation.

A Paired-Script Word-Family Check

Proofread by placing the base and derived form side by side:

  1. млад — млађи / mlad — mlađi: check ђ/đ, not дј/dj.
  2. пазити — пажња / paziti — pažnja: check ж/ž and њ/nj.
  3. мислити — мишљење / misliti — mišljenje: check ш/š and љ/lj.
  4. камен — камење / kamen — kamenje: check њ/nj.
  5. одјек / odjek: preserve the visible prefix-root sequence because jotation did not apply.

Now proofread this note:

❌ Младји возач је после вожње записао своје мислјење и једно запажање о каменју на путу.

Incorrect — standard Cyrillic requires млађи, мишљење, and камењу; the draft copied Latin-style sequences into Cyrillic.

✅ Млађи возач је после вожње записао своје мишљење и једно запажање о камењу на путу.

The younger driver wrote down his opinion and one observation about stones on the road after the drive.

For dictation, have a speaker read the corrected sentence without showing the script. Write it first in Cyrillic, then in Latin. Compare млађи/mlađi, вожње/vožnje, мишљење/mišljenje, and камењу/kamenju letter by letter. The word boundaries stay constant, but the Latin digraphs require unit-by-unit conversion.

Common Mistakes

Keeping д + ј instead of writing ђ

❌ Мој младји брат је виши од мене.

Incorrect — jotation gives млађи, with the single Cyrillic letter ђ.

✅ Мој млађи брат је виши од мене.

My younger brother is taller than me.

Substituting џ for ђ in Latin script

❌ Mladži kolega danas vodi sastanak.

Incorrect — mladži contains dž; the comparative is mlađi with đ.

✅ Mlađi kolega danas vodi sastanak.

The younger colleague is leading the meeting today.

Copying Latin nj into Cyrillic as нј

❌ Стаза је прекривена каменјем и гранјем.

Incorrect — the jotated outcomes are њ: камењем and грањем.

✅ Стаза је прекривена камењем и грањем.

The path is covered with stones and brushwood.

Missing multiple changes in one derived word

❌ После размишланја написао је своје мисленје.

Incorrect — the standard forms are размишљања and мишљење, with ш and љ/њ as required.

✅ После размишљања написао је своје мишљење.

After thinking it over, he wrote down his opinion.

Applying jotation across every visible boundary

❌ Ођек музике се чуо у ходнику.

Incorrect — одјек preserves д + ј across the prefix-root boundary; jotation does not give *ођек.

✅ Одјек музике се чуо у ходнику.

The echo of the music could be heard in the corridor.

💡
Use jotation to connect a family, not to manufacture unattested words. When a boundary is transparent or a learned word preserves a cluster, verify the dictionary form.

For a broader account of how sound alternations interact with derivation, continue with how Serbian builds words.

Key Takeaways

  • Core jotation gives тј→ћ, дј→ђ, сј→ш, зј→ж, лј→љ, нј→њ.
  • Serbian spelling normally shows the resulting phoneme, while related forms reveal the underlying family.
  • Cyrillic љ, њ correspond to Latin lj, nj, each a single alphabetic letter.
  • Several alternations can combine in one word, as in мишљење.
  • Transparent boundaries and learned words can preserve sequences: одјек, подједнако, инјекција.
