Dialogue: Ordering Coffee

A natural Serbian café order is built from short turns, not one long memorized sentence. The customer uses желела бих to make a polite request, marks ordered items in the accusative, answers the server's abbreviated questions, and checks the price and payment method. The dialogue below uses polite ви between a server and a female customer.

Complete Dialogue and Idiomatic Translation

— Конобар: Добар дан, изволите.

Server: Good afternoon. What can I get you?

— Гошћа: Добар дан. Желела бих једну домаћу кафу и чашу воде, молим вас.

Customer: Good afternoon. I'd like one traditional-style coffee and a glass of water, please.

— Конобар: Са шећером или без шећера?

Server: With sugar or without?

— Гошћа: Без шећера. А за мог пријатеља један еспресо с мало млека.

Customer: Without sugar. And one espresso with a little milk for my friend.

— Конобар: Обичан или дупли?

Server: A single or a double?

— Гошћа: Обичан, молим.

Customer: A single, please.

— Конобар: Желите ли још нешто?

Server: Would you like anything else?

— Гошћа: Имате ли колач од јабука?

Customer: Do you have apple cake?

— Конобар: Имамо, али остало нам је још само једно парче.

Server: We do, but we only have one slice left.

— Гошћа: Онда и то, молим вас. Колико је све?

Customer: Then I'll have that as well, please. How much is everything?

— Конобар: Седамсто двадесет динара.

Server: Seven hundred twenty dinars.

— Гошћа: Да ли може картицом?

Customer: Can I pay by card?

— Конобар: Наравно. Прислоните картицу овде.

Server: Of course. Tap your card here.

— Гошћа: Хвала.

Customer: Thank you.

— Конобар: Хвала вама. Поруџбину ћу вам донети за неколико минута.

Server: Thank you. I'll bring your order in a few minutes.

The translation of домаћа кафа is descriptive rather than a claim that the drink is homemade: in Serbian cafés, the term commonly names coffee prepared in the traditional boiled style. Изволите is translated by its service function, What can I get you?, rather than by one fixed English word.

Line-by-Line Annotation

1. The server gives the customer the floor

Добар дан establishes neutral politeness. Изволите is a polite plural form used with one customer addressed as ви. At this point it invites the order. The same word can later mean here you are when something is handed over.

The server does not need to ask a full question such as Шта желите да наручите? The setting makes the action clear, so the short formula is natural rather than incomplete.

2. A polite conditional order

Желела бих is the conditional of желети with a feminine l-participle because the customer is a woman. A man says Желео бих. The conditional presents the order as a request; it does not express doubt about whether the customer wants the coffee.

The ordered items are direct objects. Feminine једна домаћа кафа changes to accusative једну домаћу кафу. Чашу воде contains accusative чашу plus genitive воде, literally a glassful of water. Молим вас aligns with polite ви address.

💡
In an order, change the whole agreeing phrase, not just the noun: једна домаћа кафа becomes једну домаћу кафу.

3. Answering an abbreviated choice

Са шећером или без шећера? omits the repeated coffee and verb. The two prepositions require different cases: са + instrumental gives шећером, while без + genitive gives шећера.

The customer's Без шећера repeats only the selected option. This kind of fragment is expected in service interaction. A full reply such as Желела бих кафу без шећера is grammatical but unnecessarily repeats the order.

4. Ordering for another person

За мог пријатеља uses за + accusative. Because пријатељ is masculine animate, its accusative is genitive-like: мог пријатеља, not мој пријатељ.

Један еспресо stays in the same visible form in this direct-object use. The loan noun еспресо is commonly treated as masculine. In с мало млека, the preposition governs the quantity phrase as a whole, but invariant мало has no visible instrumental ending; inside that phrase, млека is genitive after the quantity word. The full expression means with a little milk.

The shorter preposition с is natural before мало. Са is preferred where pronunciation calls for it, as in са шећером.

5. Selecting size without repeating the noun

The server asks Обичан или дупли?. Both adjectives are masculine singular because they stand for еспресо. The customer selects Обичан. English café vocabulary uses single rather than literal ordinary, so the translation follows the situation.

Serbian often lets an agreeing adjective or demonstrative carry an omitted noun. The gender and number ending keeps the reference available.

6. Offering another item

Желите ли…? places question particle ли immediately after the finite verb. It is polite second-person plural grammar. Још нешто means anything else in this service frame.

Compare the customer-centered conditional Желела бих… with the server's present question Желите ли…?. Both are polite, but they assign the next choice differently.

7. Asking what is available

Имате ли колач од јабука? again uses verb-first ли question order. Колач is the direct object and has the same form in nominative and accusative because it is masculine inanimate. Од јабука describes the ingredient or type and contains genitive plural јабука.

The server answers Имамо, repeating the verb rather than using only да. Остало нам је… is an existential/result construction: dative нам marks the café staff, and neuter једно парче is the subject. Још само narrows the remaining quantity to one.

8. Adding the item and asking the total

Онда и то means then that as well. Neuter то refers to парче, not directly to masculine колач. The verb give/bring me is omitted because the service sequence supplies it.

Колико је све? asks for the total. Neuter singular све pairs with је. The price answer omits кошта and uses genitive plural динара after седамсто двадесет.

9. Payment by card

Да ли може картицом? is a conventional impersonal question. Instrumental картицом names the means, without са. A fuller version would be Да ли може да се плати картицом?

Прислоните is a polite plural imperative. Here a direct instruction is appropriate because the payment terminal requires a routine action. The object картицу is accusative.

💡
Politeness does not require a conditional for every service instruction. A polite imperative such as Прислоните картицу овде is natural when the requested action is expected and simple.

10. Closing and promising delivery

The server replies Хвала вама, using full dative вама to return the thanks contrastively: thank you. In Поруџбину ћу вам донети, the object поруџбину is fronted as the current topic, so the clitic sequence ћу вам occupies the early position.

За неколико минута means in a few minutes, the time until delivery. Genitive plural минута follows неколико. English present or future can fit this promise; Serbian explicitly uses future I.

Желео бих један чај од нане и две чаше обичне воде.

I'd like one mint tea and two glasses of still water. (male speaker)

Да ли имате сојино млеко или само обично?

Do you have soy milk or only regular milk?

The first order shows masculine accusative један чај and feminine две чаше. The second lets neuter adjective обично stand for omitted млеко.

Register and Café Pragmatics

The exchange maintains polite ви through изволите, молим вас, желите, прислоните, вама. A familiar regular customer and server may use ти, but learners should not assume familiarity from a friendly tone alone.

Serbian café orders are often shorter than their English equivalents: Један еспресо, Без шећера, И то, Може картицом? Context recovers the missing verbs. Adding молим, a greeting, and thanks is more important than turning every fragment into a long conditional sentence.

Common Mistakes

Failing to mark the feminine direct object

❌ Желела бих једна домаћа кафу.

Incorrect agreement — the numeral, adjective, and noun must all be feminine accusative.

✅ Желела бих једну домаћу кафу.

I'd like one traditional-style coffee. (female speaker)

Leaving the noun unchanged after без

❌ За мене кафа без шећер.

Incorrect case — без requires genitive шећера.

✅ За мене кафа без шећера.

A coffee without sugar for me.

Using са for an instrumental means of payment

❌ Да ли могу да платим са картицом?

Incorrect standard means expression — use the instrumental without са for paying by card.

✅ Да ли могу да платим картицом?

Can I pay by card?

Mismatching све with a plural verb

❌ Колико коштају све?

Incorrect agreement — neuter singular све takes a singular verb in this total-price question.

✅ Колико кошта све што смо наручили?

How much does everything we ordered cost?

Key Takeaways

  • A female customer says желела бих; a male customer says желео бих.
  • Ordered feminine nouns show accusative agreement: једну домаћу кафу, чашу воде.
  • Natural service turns often omit predictable verbs and nouns, while case and agreement remain visible in the words that survive.
  • Use са + instrumental for accompaniment or an ingredient, без + genitive for absence, and plain instrumental for payment means.
  • Keep polite ви consistent through questions, imperatives, pronouns, and thanks.

Reuse the Dialogue

  1. Order one tea, two sparkling waters, and one slice of chocolate cake. Use the correct accusative and numeral forms.
  2. Change the customer to a man, then replace every phrase whose agreement depends on the speaker. Keep the server's polite ви forms unchanged.
  3. Build a five-turn exchange in which the café has no oat milk. Accept soy milk instead, ask for the total, and pay in cash.
