Dialogue: Sharing Opinions

Sharing an opinion in Serbian is not simply choosing between да and не. Speakers mark how certain they are, which part they accept, where they disagree, and whose turn it is to refine the proposal. This discussion about Sunday opening at a city library uses stance verbs, да-clauses, partial agreement, hedging, contrastive focus, and a final move from opinion to a joint recommendation.

Complete Dialogue and Idiomatic Translation

— Тамара: Шта мислите о предлогу да градска библиотека ради недељом?

Tamara: What do you think about the proposal for the city library to open on Sundays?

— Бојан: Мислим да је то добра идеја, нарочито за људе који раде до касно.

Bojan: I think it's a good idea, especially for people who work late.

— Јелена: Углавном се слажем, али нисам сигурна да библиотека има довољно запослених.

Jelena: I generally agree, but I'm not sure the library has enough staff.

— Бојан: Тачно, али баш недељом многи имају времена да дођу.

Bojan: True, but Sunday is precisely when many people have time to come.

— Јелена: Разумем шта хоћеш да кажеш. Ипак, можда би било боље да прво уведемо тромесечни пробни период.

Jelena: I understand what you mean. Still, perhaps it would be better to introduce a three-month trial period first.

— Тамара: Значи, подржаваш пробни рад, али не и трајну промену без процене?

Tamara: So you support a trial, but not a permanent change without an evaluation?

— Јелена: Управо тако. Не противим се идеји; само мислим да треба да проверимо како функционише у пракси.

Jelena: Exactly. I'm not opposed to the idea; I just think we should check how it works in practice.

— Бојан: Мени то делује као разуман компромис. После три месеца имаћемо податке.

Bojan: That seems like a reasonable compromise to me. After three months, we'll have data.

— Тамара: Онда се слажемо да предложимо тромесечни пробни период?

Tamara: So do we agree to propose a three-month trial period?

— Бојан и Јелена: Слажемо се.

Bojan and Jelena: We agree.

The translation of да библиотека ради недељом uses an English infinitival proposal, while Serbian uses a finite да-clause. Баш недељом is translated by restructuring the sentence so that its narrow focus sounds natural in English.

Line-by-Line Annotation

1. Opening a group discussion

Tamara's Шта мислите о…? uses true plural мислите because she addresses both Bojan and Jelena. Мислити о + locative asks for a view about a topic: о предлогу. The proposal itself is specified by да + present, да градска библиотека ради недељом.

Adverb недељом is instrumental in form and means on Sundays / every Sunday habitually. A proposal about one particular Sunday would normally name that date or use у недељу.

2. Presenting a stance and its beneficiaries

Мислим да је… is the neutral frame for I think that…. Serbian requires the complementizer да before the finite clause. Subject ја is omitted because мислим already identifies first-person singular.

Нарочито за људе који раде до касно narrows the group that would benefit most. Relative који matches људе in masculine plural, but it is nominative because it functions as the subject of раде. The reason is built into Bojan's turn rather than left as a bare preference.

💡
Use мислим да + finite clause for a proposition and шта мислиш о + locative for a topic. English think about can tempt learners to merge these two frames.

3. Partial agreement and calibrated doubt

Jelena begins Углавном се слажем, which accepts the main direction without endorsing every detail. Reflexive се is required. The contrastive али then introduces a resource concern.

Нисам сигурна да… lowers commitment to the negative conclusion: she does not claim that the library definitely lacks staff. Feminine сигурна agrees with Jelena. Довољно запослених has genitive plural after the quantity word довољно.

This is genuine epistemic calibration, not decorative politeness. Compare the stronger Библиотека нема довољно запослених, which asserts the shortage as fact.

4. Conceding, then focusing the counterpoint

Bojan's Тачно accepts Jelena's concern as valid. He does not use that acceptance to end the discussion; али introduces a competing consideration. This is a compact turn-taking strategy: acknowledge, then add.

Баш недељом places expressive narrow focus on Sunday. It implies a contrast with other days: Sunday, specifically, is when potential visitors are free. Moving баш would change the focus. Многи functions substantivally as many people, and имају времена uses genitive времена.

5. Acknowledging another view before proposing an alternative

Разумем шта хоћеш да кажеш is informal singular because Jelena responds directly to Bojan. It acknowledges his intended point without claiming full agreement. Ипак signals that her following proposal survives the preceding argument.

The hedge можда and conditional би било боље present the trial as a considered alternative rather than the only rational answer. The impersonal comparison is followed by да прво уведемо…, first-person plural, which includes the group in the proposed action.

💡
Hedging is most useful when it states your commitment accurately. Можда би било боље… proposes an option; it should not conceal a fixed decision that others cannot influence.

6. Checking the scope of agreement

Tamara uses Значи to formulate what she has inferred. The explicit contrast пробни рад, али не и трајну промену identifies the boundary of Jelena's support. Both noun phrases are accusative objects of подржаваш, even though the second omits the repeated verb.

Question intonation asks Jelena to ratify the summary. This is more precise than replying So you disagree, because Jelena accepts the goal and questions only permanent implementation without evaluation.

7. Confirming and refining

Управо тако confirms exact correspondence: precisely so. Jelena then uses противити се + dative, producing не противим се идеји. This prevents her caution from being misrepresented as opposition.

Само мислим limits the assertion that follows: her position is that evaluation is necessary. Impersonal треба да проверимо expresses a recommended joint action without declaring one person solely responsible. The embedded како функционише у пракси asks how the arrangement works under real conditions.

8. An experiencer frame for evaluation

In Мени то делује као разуман компромис, full dative мени marks the evaluator and can contrast Bojan's assessment with someone else's. The proposition то is the thing that seems reasonable. English starts with that, but Serbian can foreground the experiencer.

The second sentence supplies the evidential logic: a trial will produce data. Future имаћемо is one orthographic word because the reduced infinitive stem precedes ћемо in this form.

9. Moving from opinion to agreement on action

Tamara's final слажемо се да предложимо…? asks whether the group shares a commitment to a proposal. The reply Слажемо се repeats the verb and confirms unambiguously.

This is not identical to договорили смо се. Слажемо се describes shared agreement now; договорили смо се would report that the participants reached an arrangement. The agreement and disagreement guide develops that distinction.

Stance Frames and Their Strength

FrameTypical commitmentRegister
Сигуран/сигурна сам да…strong confidenceneutral
Мислим да…ordinary personal judgmentneutral
Чини ми се да…impression, open to revisionneutral
Нисам сигуран/сигурна да…explicit doubtneutral
Можда би било боље да…tentative alternativeneutral-polite
Не бих се сложио/сложила да…softened but real disagreementneutral to formal

Чини ми се да превише говоримо о цени, а премало о квалитету услуге.

It seems to me that we're talking too much about price and too little about service quality.

Не бих се сложио да је бржа опција нужно и боља.

I wouldn't agree that the faster option is necessarily better. (male speaker)

These frames differ in truth commitment as well as social tone. Choose the one that represents how certain you actually are.

Turn-Taking and Register

The speakers are peers, so direct ти appears inside the group discussion: хоћеш, подржаваш. Tamara's opening мислите is true plural, not polite singular. In a formal panel, participants might maintain ви with each individual and use titles.

Short turns such as Тачно, Управо тако, and Слажемо се keep the discussion moving because their relation to the prior proposition is clear. Interrupting with a bare не can be appropriate when an urgent fact is wrong, but considered discussion often benefits from stating the exact scope: с тим делом се не слажем.

Common Mistakes

Omitting да before a finite opinion clause

❌ Мислим то је добра идеја за библиотеку.

Incorrect clause linking — a finite proposition after мислим normally needs да.

✅ Мислим да је то добра идеја за библиотеку.

I think that's a good idea for the library.

Using the wrong case after слагати се с

❌ Слажем се са ти око главног циља.

Incorrect case — с(а) requires instrumental тобом.

✅ Слажем се с тобом око главног циља.

I agree with you about the main goal.

Negating the copula as separate English words

❌ Ја не сам сигурна да имамо довољно времена.

Incorrect present negation — нисам is the negative first-person form of бити.

✅ Нисам сигурна да имамо довољно времена.

I'm not sure we have enough time. (female speaker)

Mixing a subject frame with a dative experiencer frame

❌ Мени мислим да овај компромис може да успе.

Incorrect construction — мислим takes a nominative subject encoded in the verb, not dative мени.

✅ Мени делује да овај компромис може да успе.

It seems to me that this compromise could work.

Key Takeaways

  • Use мислити да + clause for a proposition and мислити о + locative for a topic.
  • Partial agreement identifies common ground and then marks the exact point of doubt or contrast.
  • Можда, чини ми се, and conditional frames express real degrees of commitment, not empty politeness.
  • Place баш, само, and contrastive phrases next to the material whose scope they limit.
  • End discussion by checking the agreed action, not by assuming that shared sympathy equals a decision.

Reuse the Dialogue

  1. Discuss a proposal to make part of the city center car-free. Give one supporting view, one partially agreeing concern, and one trial solution.
  2. Move баш in three versions of a sentence so that it focuses a person, a day, and a reason. Explain the contrast each version creates.
  3. Turn a strong claim into three calibrated positions with мислим да, чини ми се да, and нисам сигуран/сигурна да.
