Dining Serbian is built from ordinary grammar: accusative objects for what you order, genitive after quantities, instrumental for payment method, and polite Ви forms with restaurant staff. Memorizing једну кафу, чашу воде, без лука, картицом as complete frames gives you patterns that remain useful outside a restaurant.
Getting a table
Use a polite plural/formal form with staff. Имате ли...? is concise and natural; Да ли имате...? is equally standard. A table intended for a group uses за + accusative.
Добро вече, имате ли слободан сто за двоје?
Good evening, do you have a free table for two?
Резервисали смо сто за четворо на име Јовановић.
We reserved a table for four under the name Jovanović.
Двоје / четворо treats the group collectively and is common when its members are not specified by gender. На име is a fixed booking frame. In a café where seating is obviously available, Да ли је слободно? can ask whether a table or seat is free.
Извините, да ли је овај сто слободан?
Excuse me, is this table free?
The demonstrative овај agrees with masculine сто. With тераса, ask Да ли је слободна ова тераса? only if asking about the whole terrace; for a table there say сто на тераси.
Three natural ways to order
All of these are polite in an ordinary service encounter:
| Frame | Typical force |
|---|---|
| Узећу + accusative | neutral decision: “I'll have...” |
| Желео бих / Желела бих + accusative | polite conditional; agrees with the speaker |
| Молим вас, донесите ми + accusative | polite direct request |
| Могу ли да добијем + accusative? | neutral polite question |
Узећу парадајз-чорбу и мешану салату.
I'll have the tomato soup and a mixed salad.
Желела бих печену пастрмку, молим вас.
I'd like the grilled trout, please. (female speaker)
Можете ли да ми донесете још једну виљушку?
Could you bring me another fork?
The ordered items are direct objects: feminine accusative парадајз-чорбу, мешану салату, печену пастрмку, једну виљушку. Ми is dative because the item is brought to the speaker.
Дајте ми... is grammatical and common at a bakery or counter, especially with молим вас. In a sit-down restaurant, донесите ми or узећу often fits the setting better. Elaborate да ли бисте могли is useful for an unusual request but unnecessary for every cup of coffee.
Quantities make the following noun genitive
Containers and imprecise quantities normally take a genitive complement.
| Quantity phrase | Structure |
|---|---|
| чаша воде | glass + genitive singular |
| флаша минералне воде | bottle + agreeing genitive phrase |
| шоља чаја | cup + genitive singular |
| парче хлеба | piece + genitive singular |
| мало млека | little + genitive singular |
| много поврћа | much + genitive singular/collective |
Могу ли да добијем чашу воде и мало хлеба?
Could I have a glass of water and a little bread?
Донесите нам две шоље чаја и једну флашу минералне воде.
Please bring us two cups of tea and one bottle of mineral water.
The outer noun follows its own number: две шоље. Its contents remain genitive: чаја. This nested structure is why “two cups tea” cannot be translated word by word.
When the drink itself means a serving, it is countable: једна кафа, две кафе, пет кафа. The phrase две кафе means two coffees/servings, while две шоље кафе explicitly names the containers.
Asking about a dish
Use Шта је...? for identity, Шта има у...? for ingredients, and Од чега је...? for what something is made from. Шта препоручујете? is a polite plural/formal question.
Шта препоручујете ако желим нешто без меса?
What do you recommend if I want something without meat?
Шта има у овој чорби и да ли је љута?
What's in this soup, and is it spicy?
Feminine ова чорба becomes locative у овој чорби. Predicate adjective љута agrees with the soup, not the diner. Food adjectives change with the item: љут сос, љута чорба, љуто јело, љуте паприке.
Да ли је пасуљ посан или се кува са месом?
Is the bean stew meatless/fasting food, or is it cooked with meat?
Посан can mean suitable for Orthodox fasting and therefore does not always equal vegan: preparation and permitted ingredients depend on the occasion. Ask about the ingredient you need to avoid instead of relying on one label.
Dietary needs and substitutions
Без + genitive removes an ingredient; са + instrumental adds or identifies accompaniment. An allergy is expressed with алергичан / алергична на + accusative.
За мене салата без сира и без ораха, молим вас.
For me, a salad without cheese and without walnuts, please.
Алергична сам на кикирики; да ли ово јело садржи кикирики?
I'm allergic to peanuts; does this dish contain peanuts? (female speaker)
Не једем месо, али једем јаја и млечне производе.
I don't eat meat, but I do eat eggs and dairy products.
The phrase не једем states a dietary practice. Не могу да једем may express inability or a restriction. For an allergy or medically important restriction, state the ingredient plainly and ask staff to confirm; the language distinction does not guarantee how a kitchen handles cross-contact.
To request a change, use a polite question or imperative:
Можете ли да ставите прелив са стране?
Could you put the dressing on the side?
Here прелив is accusative masculine inanimate and looks like nominative. Са стране is the fixed adverbial “on the side,” not accompaniment.
Eating, finishing, and aspect
Јести presents eating as an activity; појести presents consuming a relevant portion to its endpoint. Meal verbs доручковати, ручати, вечерати foreground the occasion.
Још једемо главно јело, па ћемо десерт наручити касније.
We're still eating the main course, so we'll order dessert later.
Појели смо предјело, али нисмо успели да завршимо главно јело.
We finished the appetizer, but we weren't able to finish the main course.
Do not classify ручати as perfective merely because one lunch ended. In ordinary modern use it is non-perfective; the event can be bounded by context.
Наручивати — наручити separates repeated/in-progress ordering from one bounded order:
Овде обично наручујемо рибу, али смо вечерас наручили поврће са роштиља.
We usually order fish here, but tonight we ordered grilled vegetables.
Asking for the bill and paying
The standard noun is рачун. Ask Рачун, молим вас or use a polite finite request. Payment method is bare instrumental: картицом, готовином.
Можемо ли да добијемо рачун? Платићемо картицом.
Could we have the bill? We'll pay by card.
Да ли можемо да платимо одвојено или мора све заједно?
Can we pay separately, or does everything have to be together?
Платити рачун takes a direct accusative object; do not copy English pay for the bill. Платити картицом uses instrumental without са. See плаћати / платити for recipient and amount frames.
Situational dialogue
— Добро вече, имате ли сто за троје? — Имамо, изволите. — Шта препоручујете од јела без глутена? — Пастрмку са кромпиром. — Онда ћемо две пастрмке и једну салату без хлеба. Донесите нам и флашу воде, молим вас.
— Good evening, do you have a table for three? — We do; this way, please. — What gluten-free dish do you recommend? — Trout with potatoes. — Then we'll have two trout dishes and one salad without bread. Please bring us a bottle of water too.
За троје identifies the party size. Од јела без глутена means “among/of the gluten-free dishes.” Две пастрмке follows the feminine two-to-four pattern, једну салату is accusative singular, and нам is the dative recipient of донесите.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Build an order
Order one soup, two coffees, and a bottle of water. Make every item accusative and put the contents after флаша in genitive.
Task 2: State a restriction politely
Say that you do not eat meat, are allergic to walnuts, and would like the salad without cheese. Use не једем, алергичан/алергична на + accusative, and без + genitive.
Common Mistakes
❌ Желим једна кафа и чаша вода.
Incorrect—the ordered coffee is accusative једну кафу, and the contents after чаша are genitive воде.
✅ Желео бих једну кафу и чашу воде.
I'd like one coffee and a glass of water. (male speaker)
❌ Алергичан сам од ораха.
Incorrect government—алергичан takes на + accusative.
✅ Алергичан сам на орахе, па ћу узети колач без ораха.
I'm allergic to walnuts, so I'll have a cake without walnuts. (male speaker)
❌ Платићемо са картицом после десерта.
Incorrect in standard Serbian for means of payment—use bare instrumental картицом.
✅ Платићемо картицом после десерта.
We'll pay by card after dessert.
❌ Конобару, донеси нам рачун!
Inappropriately direct to unfamiliar staff—the singular imperative and bare command sound abrupt.
✅ Извините, донесите нам рачун кад будете могли.
Excuse me, please bring us the bill when you can.
❌ Јуче смо ручали ручак у новом ресторану.
Redundant in neutral Serbian—ручати already means have lunch.
✅ Јуче смо ручали у новом ресторану близу реке.
Yesterday we had lunch at a new restaurant near the river.
