Serbian has ordinary verbs for eating each main meal: доручковати “have breakfast,” ручати “have lunch,” and вечерати “have dinner.” They lexicalize the occasion, while general јести describes eating and can foreground the food, activity, or consumed portion.
Three meals, three form sets
Доручковати has the -уј- present stem typical of many verbs in -овати. Ручати and вечерати have regular -ам presents.
| Person | доручковати | ручати | вечерати |
|---|---|---|---|
| ја | доручкујем | ручам | вечерам |
| ти | доручкујеш | ручаш | вечераш |
| он / она / оно | доручкује | руча | вечера |
| ми | доручкујемо | ручамо | вечерамо |
| ви | доручкујете | ручате | вечерате |
| они / оне / она | доручкују | ручају | вечерају |
| Verb | l-participle | Imperative | Future I |
|---|---|---|---|
On weekdays I have breakfast around seven, and on Sundays much later.
Данас ручамо у малој пекари преко пута факултета.
Today we're having lunch at the small bakery across from the university.
Вечерали смо на тераси док није почела киша.
We had dinner on the terrace until it started raining.
The aspect classification needs care
Serbian reference traditions do not classify all three verbs identically. Lexicographic sources often mark доручковати as able to receive either an open/repeated or a bounded meal-event reading. By contrast, research based on the Matica dictionaries explicitly describes ручати and вечерати as non-perfective. Some school and normative grammars have called those two biaspectual because a whole lunch or dinner can be understood from context, so learners will encounter both analyses.
For reliable active use, treat ручати / вечерати as imperfective meal verbs. A sentence can describe one completed occasion without turning them into a distinct perfective form:
Јуче смо ручали код баке, па после нисмо били гладни до вечери.
Yesterday we had lunch at Grandma's, so afterward we weren't hungry until evening.
The perfect tense and the finished day bound the occasion, but they do not by themselves prove perfective aspect. If completion must be explicit, say завршити ручак / вечеру. To foreground consuming a portion, use појести.
Кад завршимо ручак, прошетаћемо до реке.
When we finish lunch, we'll walk to the river.
Ручали смо заједно, али нико није појео десерт.
We had lunch together, but no one ate the dessert.
Ручавати and вечеравати occur as iterative/frequentative derivatives (marked/less common). Lexicographic research does not treat them as the ordinary imperfective partners of supposedly perfective ручати / вечерати. Beginners should use обично ручамо and често вечерамо.
Meal occasion or food activity?
Use a meal verb when the social/time slot matters. Use јести when eating as an activity or the specific food is central.
Већ смо доручковали, али деца још једу палачинке.
We've already had breakfast, but the children are still eating pancakes.
The breakfast occasion is complete for the group, while the children's eating activity continues. The јести reference covers једем, јео/јела, појести, and the wider consumption network.
Meal verbs can themselves name the food with a direct accusative object, especially in answers about the menu:
Доручковала сам јаја и парадајз, па ми ужина није потребна.
I had eggs and tomatoes for breakfast, so I don't need a snack. (female speaker)
Вечераћемо рибу ако је још има у ресторану.
We'll have fish for dinner if the restaurant still has some.
Often Serbian instead uses за + accusative to label the meal slot:
За ручак имамо чорбу, пуњене паприке и салату.
For lunch we're having soup, stuffed peppers, and salad.
Avoid redundant ручати ручак in neutral prose. Say ручати, јести ручак, or name the food.
Companions, place, and time
Company takes с(а) + instrumental; location and clock time follow ordinary prepositional rules.
Петком ручам с колегиницом у ресторану близу канцеларије.
On Fridays I have lunch with a colleague at a restaurant near the office.
Хоћеш ли да вечераш са нама око осам?
Would you like to have dinner with us around eight?
The subject is the eater, so these core meal verbs are not reflexive. Object clitics are possible when a specific food has already been mentioned, but се is not part of the paradigm.
Остала је супа од ручка; вечераћу је кад се вратим.
There is some soup left from lunch; I'll have it for dinner when I get back.
Imperatives and invitations
An imperative may be a practical instruction or a warm invitation. Register comes from context and politeness, not from a special meal-verb mood.
Доручкуј пре пута јер на првој станици нема продавнице.
Have breakfast before the trip because there is no store at the first stop. (informal)
Останите да вечерате с нама ако немате друге планове.
Stay and have dinner with us if you don't have other plans. (polite/plural)
Ручкати is an affectionate or child-directed alternative (informal), often used when speaking to small children: Хајде да ручкамо. It should not replace neutral ручати throughout ordinary adult prose.
Хајде да ручкамо, па ћемо после у парк.
Let's have our lunch, and then we'll go to the park. (informal, child-directed)
Micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли доручковала? — Нисам, али ћу рано ручати. — Онда бар поједи банану до ручка.
— Have you had breakfast? — No, but I'll have an early lunch. — Then at least eat a banana before lunch. (female addressee)
The dialogue contrasts the breakfast occasion, the planned lunch, and a bounded portion with поједи.
Common Mistakes
Building the wrong present of доручковати
❌ Сваког јутра доручковам пре туширања.
Incorrect — доручковати has the present stem доручкуј-: доручкујем.
✅ Сваког јутра доручкујем пре туширања.
Every morning I have breakfast before showering.
Adding reflexive се
❌ Вечерас се вечерамо код пријатеља.
Incorrect — ordinary вечерати is nonreflexive.
✅ Вечерас вечерамо код пријатеља.
Tonight we're having dinner at a friend's place.
Treating ручавати as a required aspect partner
❌ Јуче смо једном ручавали код баке.
Incorrect as a supposed perfective counterpart — ручавати is a marked iterative form and clashes with one bounded lunch here.
✅ Јуче смо ручали код баке и остали до вечери.
Yesterday we had lunch at Grandma's and stayed until evening.
Copying English “eat lunch” redundantly
❌ Обично ручам ручак око два.
Redundant in neutral Serbian — ручати already means have lunch.
✅ Обично ручам око два.
I usually have lunch around two.
Practice
Task 1: Build the three principal-form sets
Give first-person singular, third-person plural, feminine l-participle, singular imperative, and Future I for all three meal verbs. Circle the -уј- forms of доручковати.
Task 2: Choose meal verb or јести network
Write four sentences: a habitual breakfast, one lunch occasion, eating soup as an ongoing activity, and finishing a specific sandwich. Choose among доручковати, ручати, јести, and појести and explain what each profiles.
Key Takeaways
- The core forms are доручкујем, ручам, вечерам; none of the neutral meal verbs is reflexive.
- Meal verbs foreground the occasion; јести / појести foreground eating activity or a consumed portion.
- Treat ручати / вечерати as non-perfective for active use; contextual boundedness does not automatically make a verb perfective.
- Ручавати / вечеравати are marked iterative formations, not compulsory aspect partners; ручкати is informal and often child-directed.
