Dialogue: Planning a Trip

Planning a trip requires several layers of future meaning. Friends float possibilities with the conditional, commit to tasks with future I, and use present or future II inside conditions and time clauses. Place cases and transport phrases must remain accurate while the plan changes.

This dialogue plans a weekend on Tara. For broader travel vocabulary, see travel and holidays.

Complete Dialogue

Мина: Хоћемо ли негде за продужени викенд? Могли бисмо да одемо на Тару.

Mina: Shall we go somewhere for the long weekend? We could go to Tara.

Лука: Ја сам за. Ако кренемо у петак после посла, стићи ћемо до десет.

Luka: I'm in favor. If we leave on Friday after work, we'll arrive by ten.

Ана: Да ли да идемо аутобусом или колима? Последњи аутобус полази у шест.

Ana: Should we go by bus or by car? The last bus leaves at six.

Лука: Колима бисмо били слободнији, али би гориво било скупље.

Luka: We'd have more freedom by car, but fuel would be more expensive.

Мина: Ако будемо ишли колима, поделићемо трошкове. Лука може да вози, а ја ћу проверити пут и паркинг.

Mina: If we go by car, we'll split the costs. Luka can drive, and I'll check the route and parking.

Ана: Ја ћу потражити смештај. Колики нам је буџет по особи?

Ana: I'll look for accommodation. What is our budget per person?

Лука: До осам хиљада динара за две ноћи било би у реду.

Luka: Up to eight thousand dinars for two nights would be fine.

Ана: Ако на Тари не буде било слободних соба, можемо да спавамо у Бајиној Башти.

Ana: If there are no available rooms on Tara, we can stay in Bajina Bašta.

Мина: Добра идеја. Кад будемо стигли, прво ћемо оставити ствари, па ћемо отићи на вечеру.

Mina: Good idea. When we arrive, we'll first leave our things, then go to dinner.

Лука: Договорено. Ана резервише смештај, Мина проверава пут, а ја ћу направити списак ствари за кола.

Luka: Agreed. Ana will book the accommodation, Mina will check the route, and I'll make a packing list for the car.

Ана: Послаћу вам две понуде вечерас, па ћемо коначно изабрати.

Ana: I'll send you two options tonight, and then we'll make the final choice.

Line-by-Line Grammar

1. An invitation plus a tentative destination

Хоћемо ли негде? literally asks whether ‘we want to,’ but pragmatically proposes a shared trip. Могли бисмо да одемо uses conditional бисмо to keep Tara negotiable.

The destination is на Тару, accusative after на. Location is на Тари, and source is са Таре. The preposition belongs to the place's conventional pattern.

2. Present in a future condition

Ако кренемо, perfective present, refers to a future departure because ако supplies conditional future reference. The main result стићи ћемо uses future I and perfective стићи for successful arrival.

До десет gives a deadline: by ten. It does not mean that the journey lasts ten hours.

3. Transport means use bare instrumental

Аутобусом and колима are instrumental forms expressing means of transport, normally without с(а). Кола is grammatically plural, so its instrumental is колима.

The scheduled bus uses present полази, even though the trip is in the future. Timetables regularly license this tense.

💡
Use bare instrumental for transport: путујемо аутобусом, возом, авионом, колима. Adding са changes the relationship toward accompaniment.

4. Conditional tradeoffs

Били бисмо слободнији and гориво би било скупље present two hypothetical consequences. The l-participles agree with their subjects: plural masculine/mixed били, neuter singular било with гориво.

This parallel conditional makes the comparison balanced: flexibility is not presented as free of cost.

5. Future II and future I divide the condition

Ако будемо ишли колима uses future II, будемо + l-participle, to make the future circumstance explicit. The result поделићемо трошкове is future I.

The friends then distribute responsibilities. Ја ћу проверити is a commitment to a bounded task; Лука може да вози states practical ability/availability.

6. Budget government

Колики нам је буџет? uses dative clitic нам for the group whose budget is being discussed. По особи uses по + locative distributively: per person.

Осам хиљада динара ends in genitive plural динара. За две ноћи uses the paucal form две ноћи after two. Conditional било би у реду frames the amount as a negotiable ceiling.

7. Existential future II

Ако не буде било слободних соба is future II of impersonal/existential бити. The absent item appears in genitive plural слободних соба, parallel to present нема слободних соба.

The alternative location is у Бајиној Башти, locative. A destination would be у Бајину Башту.

8. A future time clause

Кад будемо стигли uses future II in a future time clause. Once arrival is complete, the group will perform two perfective future actions: оставићемо and отићи ћемо.

Clitic ћемо is fused in оставићемо but precedes the infinitive in ћемо отићи because отићи ends in -ћи.

9. Present tense assigns agreed responsibilities

After договорено, the presents Ана резервише, Мина проверава have scheduled-future force. They sound like settled entries on a task list. Luka switches to explicit future ја ћу направити to state his own commitment.

The fronted names mark contrast among responsible people; Serbian does not need to repeat pronoun она.

10. Options before a final choice

Послаћу вам две понуде uses dative вам and paucal две понуде. Па ћемо изабрати presents the final choice as the consequence after everyone sees them.

Perfective изабрати does not describe comparing; it names the completed decision that ends the planning stage.

Discourse and Register

The group separates preferences from commitments. Могли бисмо introduces Tara; ако clauses test transport and accommodation risks; only after договорено do speakers assign tasks. This prevents a suggestion from masquerading as a final decision.

The register is neutral informal. Terms such as буџет, паркинг, понуда are ordinary contemporary travel language. The dialogue does not use regional slang as though every Serbian speaker plans trips in the same style.

Reuse Exercises

Task 1: Change destination and transport

Могли бисмо да одемо у Суботицу возом. Ако кренемо рано, имаћемо цело поподне за разгледање.

We could go to Subotica by train. If we leave early, we'll have the whole afternoon for sightseeing.

Task 2: Redistribute the tasks

Ја ћу купити карте, ти провери смештај, а Нина нека направи план за суботу.

I'll buy the tickets, you check the accommodation, and Nina can make the plan for Saturday.

Common Mistakes

Using location case for the destination

❌ За викенд идемо на Тари.

Incorrect — destination requires accusative на Тару; на Тари is location.

✅ За викенд идемо на Тару, а две ноћи остајемо на Тари.

For the weekend we're going to Tara, and we're staying on Tara for two nights.

Adding са to a transport means

❌ Путоваћемо са аутобусом јер је јефтиније.

Incorrect for means of transport — use bare instrumental аутобусом.

✅ Путоваћемо аутобусом јер је јефтиније.

We'll travel by bus because it's cheaper.

Copying English future into an ако clause

❌ Ако ћемо ићи колима, поделићемо гориво.

Incorrect for a neutral condition — use present ако идемо or future II ако будемо ишли.

✅ Ако будемо ишли колима, поделићемо трошкове горива.

If we go by car, we'll split the fuel costs.

Combining future auxiliary with a present verb

❌ Ми ћемо поделимо трошкове.

Incorrect — after ћемо use the infinitive поделити, or use fused поделићемо.

✅ Ми ћемо поделити трошкове смештаја.

We'll split the accommodation costs.

Key Takeaways

  • Use the conditional for possibilities and future I for committed tasks.
  • Future conditions take present or future II, not mechanically copied English will.
  • Transport means normally use bare instrumental: аутобусом, возом, колима.
  • Preserve destination–location contrasts: на Тару / на Тари, у Бајину Башту / у Бајиној Башти.
  • Assign responsibilities only after the group has agreed on the plan and contingencies.
