Dialogue: Repairing a Misunderstanding

Repairing a misunderstanding is a joint discourse task: one speaker identifies what was ambiguous, the other reformulates it, and both protect the working relationship while settling the facts. Serbian uses echo questions, explicit reference phrases, мислити на + accusative, reformulators such as хтела сам да кажем, and carefully placed clitics. The exchange below concerns an ambiguous message about a report deadline.

Complete Dialogue and Idiomatic Translation

— Јелена: Видела сам твоју поруку. Кад си написала „пошаљи га до петка“, на шта се односила заменица „га“ — на нацрт или на цео извештај?

Jelena: I saw your message. When you wrote, ‘send it by Friday,’ what did the pronoun ‘it’ refer to — the draft or the whole report?

— Мина: На нацрт. Мислила сам да је то јасно из претходне реченице, али видим да није.

Mina: The draft. I thought that was clear from the previous sentence, but I can see it wasn't.

— Јелена: Аха, ја сам разумела да до петка очекујеш коначну верзију.

Jelena: Ah, I understood that you expected the final version by Friday.

— Мина: Коначну верзију? Не, нисам то мислила.

Mina: The final version? No, that's not what I meant.

— Мина: Хтела сам да кажем да ми у петак пошаљеш радну верзију, па да је заједно прегледамо у понедељак.

Mina: What I meant was that you should send me the working version on Friday so that we can review it together on Monday.

— Јелена: Добро, сад разумем. Извини што сам одмах претпоставила да је рок померен.

Jelena: All right, I understand now. Sorry I immediately assumed the deadline had been moved.

— Мина: Нема потребе да се извињаваш; моја порука је била непрецизна.

Mina: You don't need to apologize; my message was imprecise.

— Јелена: Ипак, требало је да проверим. Да ли онда важи: нацрт у петак, коначна верзија следеће среде?

Jelena: Still, I should have checked. So is this correct: the draft on Friday and the final version next Wednesday?

— Мина: Тако је. Хвала ти што си питала.

Mina: That's right. Thank you for asking.

The first line deliberately quotes the original message with Serbian quotation marks „…“. Its English translation uses English punctuation conventions. The goal is not to imitate each Serbian word but to preserve the conversational action: Jelena is asking which noun the pronoun selected.

Line-by-Line Annotation

1. Locating the ambiguity precisely

Jelena begins with evidence rather than accusation: Видела сам твоју поруку. Feminine видела identifies her as a woman; сам is the past auxiliary clitic. She then quotes only the problematic stretch instead of claiming that the entire message made no sense.

In на шта се односила заменица „га“, the verb односити се на takes на + accusative. Feminine односила agrees with заменица. Both нацрт and извештај are masculine, so accusative clitic га fits either antecedent. Grammar alone therefore cannot resolve the reference.

💡
When a pronoun has two grammatically possible antecedents, repeat the competing nouns: Да ли мислиш на X или на Y? Do not keep replacing the unclear material with more pronouns.

2. A fragment that answers exactly the requested slot

Mina's На нацрт is not a defective sentence. It supplies the complement requested by на шта and preserves the governing preposition. English may simply say the draft, but Serbian keeps на because the full answer is „га“ се односило на нацрт.

Мислила сам да је то јасно reports Mina's earlier assumption. Neuter то refers to the interpretation as a whole, not to one masculine noun. In али видим да није, the complement clear is omitted because it is recoverable. Idiomatic English supplies it wasn't rather than translating the Serbian negative copula in isolation.

3. Stating the rejected interpretation

Ја сам разумела includes emphatic ја because Jelena contrasts her interpretation with Mina's intention. Разумети да + clause presents the content she inferred. The time phrase до петка can attach to очекујеш or to the embedded delivery event in a hurried message; Jelena makes her reading explicit.

She says коначну верзију, accusative direct object of the understood delivery expectation. Making the competing proposition explicit gives Mina something concrete to confirm or reject.

4. Echo question and correction

Mina repeats Коначну верзију? with questioning intonation. This echo question marks surprise and checks that she heard the interpretation correctly. Its accusative form is inherited from the preceding clause rather than reset mechanically to nominative.

Нисам то мислила rejects that proposition. Here мислити means intend/mean, with то as its accusative object. When naming the topic explicitly, Serbian often uses мислити на + accusative: Мислила сам на нацрт.

5. Reformulating instead of merely repeating

Хтела сам да кажем да… announces a replacement formulation. It does not literally express an unrealized wish to speak; in this context it means what I meant was. The first да introduces what Mina wanted to do — да кажем — and the second introduces the content of кажем.

The dative clitic ми precedes the finite verb in да ми у петак пошаљеш. The time phrase between clitic and verb is possible because ми belongs early in the subordinate clause and у петак receives contrastive relevance. Later, accusative је refers to feminine радну верзију: па да је заједно прегледамо.

The aspectual choices separate one delivery (пошаљеш, perfective) from the planned review as a bounded joint action (прегледамо, perfective). The speakers are not discussing repeated habits.

6. Apologizing without accepting a false fact

Jelena's Добро, сад разумем closes the factual repair before she apologizes. Извини што сам… takes што + finite clause for the action regretted. Одмах implies that she jumped to a conclusion before checking.

Mina responds Нема потребе да се извињаваш, literally there is no need for you to apologize. She then accepts a share of responsibility: моја порука је била непрецизна. This face-saving response does not pretend that no misunderstanding happened; it locates a repairable cause in the wording.

💡
A cooperative repair distinguishes intention from effect. Нисам то мислила clarifies intention; порука је била непрецизна acknowledges why the other reading was possible.

7. Converting the repair into a testable summary

Jelena does not stop at now I understand. Требало је да проверим is an impersonal past obligation meaning I should have checked. She then uses a compressed summary: нацрт у петак, коначна верзија следеће среде. The omitted verbs are recoverable from the prior turns.

Да ли онда важи…? asks whether the summary now stands as the operative arrangement. Mina confirms with Тако је, which agrees with the proposition rather than merely expressing general approval. Хвала ти што си питала thanks Jelena for the completed act of asking; feminine питала agrees with Jelena.

A Practical Repair Sequence

isolate the problemКад си рекла…, да ли си мислила…?targets wording, not competence

echo a surprising readingX?checks before rejecting
replace the wordingХтео/хтела сам да кажем да…provides a usable reformulation
accept responsibilityНисам се јасно изразио/изразила.acknowledges the source of trouble
verify the resultДа ли онда важи…?creates a shared final version

Кад кажеш да је састанак одложен, мислиш ли да почиње касније или да је пребачен на други дан?

When you say the meeting has been postponed, do you mean that it starts later or that it has been moved to another day?

Другим речима, не тражиш нови уговор, него исправљену последњу страну — јесам ли добро разумела?

In other words, you're not asking for a new contract but for a corrected final page — have I understood correctly? (female speaker)

These questions offer a candidate interpretation without forcing the other person to defend themselves. Reformulation and emphasis compares другим речима, заправо, and related markers.

Register and Face-Saving

The dialogue is informal workplace speech between two women who use ти. In a formal ви relationship, Кад сте написали…, Да ли сте мислили…?, and Извините што сам… would be appropriate. Standard polite singular past agreement is plural: написали, мислили, regardless of the addressee's gender.

Questions such as Како то ниси разумела? can sound as though the listener is at fault. A neutral repair names the ambiguous expression and asks what it referred to. Conversely, excessive self-blame can distract from the practical task. A short apology plus an explicit final summary is often more cooperative than a long defense.

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong gender clitic for the antecedent

❌ Кад завршиш нацрт, пошаљи је редакторки.

Incorrect reference — feminine је cannot refer to masculine нацрт.

✅ Кад завршиш нацрт, пошаљи га редакторки.

When you finish the draft, send it to the editor.

Putting the dative clitic after the finite verb

❌ Хтела сам да кажем да пошаљеш ми радну верзију.

Incorrect neutral clitic placement — ми belongs in the early clitic position of the да-clause.

✅ Хтела сам да кажем да ми пошаљеш радну верзију.

What I meant was that you should send me the working version.

Combining због with a finite сам clause

❌ Извини због сам погрешно разумела поруку.

Incorrect complement — use што with a finite clause, or због with a noun phrase.

✅ Извини што сам погрешно разумела твоју поруку.

Sorry I misunderstood your message. (female speaker)

Omitting the preposition from a short answer

❌ — На шта се односи „то“? — Нови рок.

Incorrect case frame — the short answer should retain на from односити се на.

✅ — На шта се односи „то“? — На нови рок.

— What does ‘that’ refer to? — The new deadline.

Key Takeaways

  • If two nouns are possible antecedents, repeat them; a gender-matching clitic may not disambiguate reference.
  • Echo questions preserve the relevant case and check an interpretation before rejecting it.
  • Хтео/хтела сам да кажем… introduces a genuine reformulation, while мислити на + accusative names the intended referent.
  • A useful apology acknowledges the effect without turning the clarification into a dispute about blame.
  • End the repair with an explicit summary and a confirmation such as Да ли онда важи…?

Reuse the Dialogue

  1. Replace the ambiguous га with feminine је that could refer to two different feminine nouns. Build a clarification question that names both candidates.
  2. Repair a misunderstanding about whether a meeting is later the same day or moved to tomorrow. Include an echo question, хтео/хтела сам да кажем, an apology, and a final summary.
  3. Rewrite the workplace exchange for a polite ви relationship. Change every second-person verb, pronoun, imperative, and past form consistently.

For the social choices behind correction and apology, continue with directness and face.
