Apologizing and Making Excuses

Serbian distinguishes attracting attention, acknowledging a routine inconvenience, asking forgiveness, and expressing regret. Извини/извините, извињавам се, опрости/опростите, and жао ми је overlap, but they do not carry identical social weight. A convincing apology usually names the problem with што + clause or због + genitive, takes responsibility, and states what will happen next.

Choosing the apology

ExpressionTypical useRegister
извини / извинитеattention, interruption, ordinary apologyinformal singular / polite or plural
извињавам сеexplicit apology by the speakerneutral to formal
опрости / опроститеrequest for forgiveness, often more personal or seriousinformal singular / polite or plural
жао ми јеregret, sympathy, or apologyneutral across many settings
моја грешкаbrief ownership of a mistakeinformal to neutral

Извини што касним; погрешно сам прочитао време поласка.

Sorry I'm late; I misread the departure time. (male speaker, informal singular)

Извињавам се због буке; радови ће бити завршени до пет.

I apologize for the noise; the work will be finished by five. (neutral/formal)

Опрости ми што сам ти прећутала тако важну ствар.

Forgive me for keeping such an important thing from you. (female speaker, informal singular)

Извините can simply open a question: Извините, где је излаз? That does not claim serious wrongdoing. Опрости ми asks the listener to forgive the speaker and therefore uses dative ми.

For attention-getting, thanks, and offers alongside apologies, see please, thank you, and apologies.

💡
Choose by communicative job, not by translating English sorry mechanically: attention-getting извините, explicit извињавам се, personal опрости ми, or regretful жао ми је.

Naming what went wrong

Use што + finite clause when you describe an action or situation. Use због + genitive before a noun phrase.

Извините што вас прекидам, али стигао је хитан позив.

Excuse me for interrupting you, but an urgent call has come in. (polite or plural)

Жао нам је због кашњења испоруке и непријатности коју је оно изазвало.

We are sorry for the delivery delay and the inconvenience it caused. (formal/business)

Жао ми је што ти нисам раније јавила да се план променио.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier that the plan had changed. (female speaker, informal singular)

After због, both adjective and noun are genitive: због погрешне адресе, због дугог чекања. After што, use a finite verb with the correct person and tense. Do not combine the two frames as због што in standard Serbian.

Жао ми је contains dative experiencer ми. An organization can use жао нам је; the thing regretted follows што or због.

Explaining without evading responsibility

An explanation answers why something happened. It becomes an excuse in the negative social sense when it replaces acknowledgment of the effect or falsely removes responsibility. Serbian grammar does not make that ethical distinction for you; wording and context do.

Закаснила сам јер се аутобус заглавио у саобраћајној гужви, али требало је раније да вам јавим.

I was late because the bus got stuck in traffic, but I should have let you know earlier. (female speaker, polite or plural)

Нисам могао да пошаљем датотеку јер није било интернета; послаћу је чим се веза успостави.

I couldn't send the file because there was no internet; I'll send it as soon as the connection is restored. (male speaker)

Нисам могао/могла reports inability. Нисам хтео/хтела reports unwillingness or lack of intention and can sound defensive if used carelessly. To clarify that harm was unintended, say so directly:

Није ми била намера да те доведем у непријатан положај.

I didn't mean to put you in an uncomfortable position. (informal singular)

This sentence explains intention but does not itself repair the harm. A fuller apology can add разумем зашто си се наљутила/наљутио or a concrete remedy.

Formal notices often use impersonal дошло је до + genitive: дошло је до техничке грешке. This is useful when describing an event, but overuse may sound as though no one is responsible.

Дошло је до грешке приликом обраде уплате; извињавамо се и исправићемо износ данас.

An error occurred while the payment was being processed; we apologize and will correct the amount today. (formal/business)

Taking responsibility and offering repair

Моја грешка is concise. Крив/крива сам accepts stronger personal responsibility. The past participle or predicate agrees with the speaker.

Моја грешка — послала сам вам стару верзију документа.

My mistake—I sent you the old version of the document. (female speaker)

Крив сам што нисам проверио адресу пре него што сам наручио такси.

It's my fault that I didn't check the address before ordering the taxi. (male speaker)

A repair can use future I, a modal question, or потрудити се да...:

Одмах ћу исправити рачун и послати вам нови примерак.

I'll correct the invoice immediately and send you a new copy.

Могу ли некако да надокнадим време које сте изгубили?

Is there any way I can make up for the time you lost? (polite or plural)

Потрудићу се да се оваква грешка не понови.

I'll make an effort to ensure that this kind of mistake doesn't happen again.

The fixed promise неће се поновити is common, but it is credible only when the speaker can influence the situation. A specific repair is often more useful than a dramatic formula.

Degree of formality and relationship

Keep the address system consistent. Извини, нисам ти јавила addresses one familiar person. Извините, нисам вам јавила addresses several people or one person politely. In direct respectful correspondence, Вам may be capitalized for one addressee, but lowercase is also common in contemporary professional email.

Извините што вам нисам одговорила раније; чекала сам потврду из рачуноводства.

I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier; I was waiting for confirmation from accounting. (female speaker; professional)

Заиста се извињавам and искрено се извињавам intensify an apology. Intensification should match the problem. A long ceremonial apology for a tiny interruption can sound theatrical, while bare извини may be insufficient after serious harm.

Responding to an apology

Acceptance can reassure without denying that something happened: у реду је, нема проблема, дешава се, не брини/не брините. Informal нема везе can mean “never mind / it's okay,” but tone may also sound dismissive.

У реду је, хвала ти што си ми јавио на време.

It's all right; thank you for letting me know in time. (addressing a man informally)

Нема проблема, можемо да померимо састанак за пола сата.

No problem; we can move the meeting by half an hour.

Acceptance does not require abandoning a boundary. Прихватам извињење, али... is neutral to formal and allows the speaker to name what must change.

Прихватам извињење, али вас молим да убудуће проверите податке пре објављивања.

I accept the apology, but I ask you to check the information before publication in future. (formal)

Situational dialogue

— Извини што касним. Записала сам погрешну адресу и отишла у другу улицу. — У реду је, али следећи пут ми јави чим видиш да ћеш закаснити. — У праву си. Моја грешка. Платићу кафу да ти се одужим. — Договорено.

— Sorry I'm late. I wrote down the wrong address and went to another street. — It's all right, but next time let me know as soon as you see that you'll be late. — You're right. My mistake. I'll pay for the coffee to make it up to you. — Deal. (female first speaker; informal exchange)

The apology names the fault with што + present, gives an explanation in feminine perfect forms, accepts responsibility, and offers repair. The response accepts the apology while stating a reasonable future expectation.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build two causes

Apologize for an action with што + finite verb, then apologize for a noun phrase with због + genitive. Make one informal and one polite.

Task 2: Add responsibility and repair

Write a three-sentence workplace apology: acknowledge a wrong attachment, explain briefly, and promise a specific corrected file. Avoid using an impersonal formula as the only acknowledgment.

Common Mistakes

❌ Извињавам због погрешне информације.

Incorrect—the apology formula извињавам се requires reflexive се.

✅ Извињавам се због погрешне информације у јучерашњој поруци.

I apologize for the incorrect information in yesterday's message.

❌ Жао ме је што нисам дошао.

Incorrect case—the experiencer in жао ми је is dative ми, not accusative ме.

✅ Жао ми је што нисам дошао на твоју изложбу.

I'm sorry I didn't come to your exhibition. (male speaker)

❌ Извини због што сам заборавила наш договор.

Incorrect complement—use што + finite clause or због + genitive noun phrase, not због што.

✅ Извини што сам заборавила наш договор.

Sorry I forgot our arrangement. (female speaker, informal singular)

❌ Господине, извини што ти нисам одговорио.

Incorrect address agreement—the formal title requires извините and вам.

✅ Господине, извините што вам нисам раније одговорио.

Sir, I'm sorry I didn't reply to you earlier. (male speaker)

❌ Опрости мене што сам изгубио твоју књигу.

Incorrect case—the person asked for forgiveness is dative ми in this formula.

✅ Опрости ми што сам изгубио књигу коју си ми позајмила.

Forgive me for losing the book you lent me. (male speaker addressing a woman)
