A first meeting in Serbian requires more than exchanging names. The speakers must also choose ти or polite ви, place the short present forms of бити naturally, and leave names, professions, and identity descriptions in the nominative. This dialogue takes place before an evening course and shows two adults beginning with polite ви, then explicitly agreeing to use ти.
Complete Dialogue and Idiomatic Translation
— Милица: Добар дан. Ја сам Милица Петровић. Да ли сте ви нови полазник?
Milica: Good afternoon. I'm Milica Petrović. Are you the new course participant?
— Данијел: Јесам. Зовем се Данијел О'Конор. Драго ми је.
Danijel: I am. My name is Danijel O'Connor. Nice to meet you.
— Милица: И мени је драго. Одакле сте?
Milica: Nice to meet you too. Where are you from?
— Данијел: Из Ирске сам, али сада живим у Београду. А ви?
Danijel: I'm from Ireland, but I live in Belgrade now. And you?
— Милица: Ја сам из Ниша. И ја сам нова на овом курсу.
Milica: I'm from Niš. I'm new to this course too.
— Данијел: Онда можемо на ти, ако се слажете.
Danijel: Then we can use informal address, if that's all right with you.
— Милица: Наравно. Чиме се бавиш, Данијеле?
Milica: Of course. What do you do, Danijel?
— Данијел: Студент сам, а ти?
Danijel: I'm a student. How about you?
— Милица: Ја сам преводитељка. Радим у једној издавачкој кући.
Milica: I'm a translator. I work for a publishing house.
— Данијел: Лепо. Ево, час почиње.
Danijel: Nice. Look, the class is starting.
— Милица: Хајде да седнемо овде.
Milica: Let's sit here.
The translation of можемо на ти cannot be word-for-word. Serbian names the address relationship directly: the speakers agree to use ти forms. Depending on the English-speaking culture, the closest effect may be we can use first names or we don't have to be formal.
Line-by-Line Annotation
1. Greeting and identifying yourself
Добар дан is a neutral greeting for daytime contact. Milica then says Ја сам Милица Петровић. The short present form сам normally comes after the first stressed unit, here ја. The name is nominative because it identifies the subject; it is not an object.
Serbian can omit subject pronouns, but ја is natural when a speaker first establishes who they are. In Да ли сте ви нови полазник?, the overt ви distinguishes the person being addressed and reinforces the polite frame. Сте is second-person plural grammar used for one politely addressed adult.
2. Answering with the verb instead of да
Danijel replies Јесам, the affirmative full form corresponding to сте in the question. A bare да would be understandable, but repeating the positive verb makes the answer clear and natural. Serbian often answers a yes-or-no question with the relevant verb: Јеси ли нов? — Јесам.
Зовем се Данијел О'Конор is the ordinary naming formula. The reflexive clitic се stands after the finite verb in this clause, and the name remains nominative. Драго ми је uses dative ми for the experiencer: literally, something is pleasant to me.
3. Returning the greeting and asking origin
И мени је драго adds stressed dative мени after и: to me too. This is not merely a longer form of ми; the full form carries the contrastive meaning me too.
Одакле сте? maintains polite ви address. Origin takes из + genitive, which produces из Ирске and из Ниша. Present location instead takes у + locative: у Београду.
4. Information structure in the origin answer
Danijel says Из Ирске сам, placing the requested information first and the copula clitic second. Neutral English normally starts with I, so I'm from Ireland is the idiomatic translation. Сам из Ирске cannot normally begin an independent neutral sentence because the unstressed clitic сам needs a host.
Short А ви? recovers the omitted question Where are you from? The conjunction а shifts the same topic to the other speaker. Repeating Одакле сте ви? would be grammatical but needlessly heavy here.
5. Nominative agreement with the speaker
Milica says нова, feminine singular, because she is describing herself. A man would say нов. На овом курсу is locative after static на. In И ја сам нова, initial и means too, while ја identifies who shares the property.
The same agreement logic appears later in profession nouns. Преводитељка explicitly names a female translator; masculine преводилац is a common corresponding form. Both remain nominative after сам.
6. Negotiating ви and ти
Можемо на ти is the conventional expression for moving to familiar singular address. Danijel has proposed the change, but it is not yet accepted, so he correctly finishes with polite ако се слажете. Switching prematurely to ако се слажеш would assume the answer.
Once Milica says Наравно, she uses informal singular бавиш and Danijel answers with а ти? The change is joint and visible throughout the verb system. Learn more about this social choice on ти versus ви.
7. Asking and stating occupations
Чиме се бавиш? literally asks With what do you occupy yourself? and idiomatically means What do you do? Instrumental чиме belongs to the government of бавити се. The vocative Данијеле directly addresses Danijel; it is separated by a comma in writing.
Студент сам puts the profession-like identity first and the clitic second. А ти? again recovers the full reciprocal question. Milica's Ја сам преводитељка uses a nominative profession without једна. English needs a translator; Serbian normally does not.
8. Closing the introductory sequence
Лепо evaluates what Milica has said without repeating a full clause. Ево redirects attention to an immediate development: the class is starting. Present почиње describes the event beginning now.
Хајде да седнемо is an inclusive suggestion: let's sit down. First-person plural седнемо includes both speakers. It turns the successful introduction into a shared next action rather than ending with another formula.
The Present of бити in This Dialogue
| Person | Short form | Identity example |
|---|---|---|
| ја | сам | Ја сам Милица. |
| ти | си | Ти си нов. |
| он / она | је | Она је преводитељка. |
| ми | смо | Ми смо нови. |
| ви | сте | Ви сте нови полазник. |
| они / оне / она | су | Они су студенти. |
The short forms are clitics, so their position matters. Serbian also often drops the pronoun: Студент сам is complete. Use an overt pronoun when establishing a participant, contrasting people, or preventing ambiguity; do not mechanically repeat it in every sentence.
Ми смо нови у групи, али се већ познајемо с посла.
We're new to the group, but we already know each other from work.
Она је моја колегиница, а ја сам њен нови колега на курсу.
She's my colleague, and I'm her new coursemate.
Register and Cultural Pragmatics
Beginning with ви is a safe choice between unfamiliar adults in a structured course, workplace, or institutional setting. Peers may move to ти almost immediately, especially in a relaxed group, but age alone does not decide the relationship. Workplaces, regions, and individuals differ.
Using a first name does not automatically establish ти. Conversely, some settings maintain ви while using first names. Listen to the verb and pronoun forms, and accept an explicit proposal such as Можемо на ти without treating either choice as warmer or better by definition.
Common Mistakes
Omitting the present copula
❌ Ја студент на овом курсу.
Incorrect — Serbian requires a present form of бити in this identity statement.
✅ Ја сам студент на овом курсу.
I'm a student on this course.
Adding an English-style indefinite article
❌ Милица је једна преводитељка.
Incorrect for a neutral profession statement — једна adds a special meaning rather than an article.
✅ Милица је преводитељка у издавачкој кући.
Milica is a translator at a publishing house.
Putting the name in the accusative after звати се
❌ Зовем се Марка Петровића.
Incorrect case — a man's name after звати се remains nominative, not animate accusative.
✅ Зовем се Марко Петровић.
My name is Marko Petrović.
Switching to ти before it is accepted
❌ Можемо на ти, ако се слажеш и ако вам одговара?
Incorrect person agreement — слажеш addresses ти, while вам belongs to ви in the same addressee chain.
✅ Можемо на ти, ако се слажете и ако вам одговара?
We can use informal address, if you agree and that suits you.
Key Takeaways
- Names, professions, and identity descriptions stay nominative after бити and звати се.
- Short present forms сам, си, је, смо, сте, су are clitics and normally need an earlier stressed host.
- Origin uses из + genitive, while present location uses у + locative.
- Begin with ви when the setting calls for it, and switch to ти only after the change is mutually accepted.
- Elliptical turns such as А ви? recover their meaning from the previous question.
Reuse the Dialogue
- Rebuild the meeting for two students who begin directly with ти. Include their names, cities of origin, and one nominative role each.
- Create a formal first meeting that remains on ви. Replace every familiar form in the second half of the dialogue and add an appropriate title.
- Answer Одакле сте? with origin, current city, and a contrast using али. Put the requested origin phrase first so that the copula falls naturally into second position.
