Бити is the Serbian copula “be,” the auxiliary of the perfect and conditional, and the source of several form series that do different jobs. Its short present forms are clitics, its full forms carry emphasis, its negatives are fused, and the будем series expresses nonactual or bounded being rather than the ordinary present.
The Three Present Series
| Person | full/emphatic | short clitic | negative | будем series |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ја | јесам | сам | нисам | будем |
| ти | јеси | си | ниси | будеш |
| он / она / оно | јесте | је | није | буде |
| ми | јесмо | смо | нисмо | будемо |
| ви | јесте | сте | нисте | будете |
| они / оне / она | јесу | су | нису | буду |
The ordinary neutral copula is the short series. It cannot normally stand at the left edge of a statement, so Serbian says Ја сам код куће or simply Код куће сам, not neutral сам код куће. Subject pronouns are often omitted because the verb form identifies person.
Данас смо у канцеларији до шест.
We’re at the office until six today.
Моја сестра је архитекта, а брат је физиотерапеут.
My sister is an architect, and my brother is a physiotherapist.
Unlike English, contemporary standard Serbian does not generally drop the present copula. Noun and adjective predicates still need сам, си, је, смо, сте, су.
Full Forms Answer, Correct, and Contrast
Use јесам, јеси, јесте, јесмо, јесте, јесу when the verb itself carries focus: in short answers, corrections, and emphatic contrasts. The older third-singular јест survives mainly in fixed expressions such as то јест “that is” and is otherwise marked (literary/formal).
„Јеси ли спремна?“ — „Јесам, само да узмем капут.“
‘Are you ready?’ — ‘Yes, I am; I just need to get my coat.’ (female addressee)
Они јесу уморни, али нису незадовољни резултатом.
They are tired, but they are not dissatisfied with the result. (emphatic contrast)
The negative series is one word. It is not built by placing separate не before the positive form.
Нисам љут; само ми треба мало тишине.
I’m not angry; I just need a little quiet. (male speaker)
Questions commonly use да ли + clitic form or full form + ли: Да ли си...? / Јеси ли...? Both are standard. The second is especially compact.
Copula, Identity, State, and Location
Бити links the subject to a noun, adjective, or location. Predicate adjectives agree with the subject in gender and number.
Сала је мала, али су прозори велики и светли.
The room is small, but the windows are large and bright.
Резервни кључ је у малој фиоци испод телефона.
The spare key is in the small drawer beneath the telephone.
With professions and roles, a bare nominative noun is normal: она је лекарка. Serbian has no article corresponding to English a. For the distinction between copular location and existential има, see biti, copulas, and existence.
Past, Future, Conditional, and Imperative
| Category | Core forms |
|---|---|
| l-participle | био, била, било; били, биле, била |
| perfect | био сам / била сам; био си / била си; био је / била је; били смо; били сте; били су |
| Future I | бићу, бићеш, биће, бићемо, бићете, биће |
| conditional | био бих / била бих; био би / била би; био би / била би; били бисмо; били бисте; били би |
| imperative | буди, будимо, будите |
The l-participle agrees with the subject. English was/were does not mark gender, but Serbian does.
Прошле недеље сам била на службеном путу у Нишу.
Last week I was on a business trip in Niš. (female speaker)
Следећег месеца ћемо бити ближе школи.
Next month we’ll be closer to the school.
The prefixed-looking Future I forms бићу, бићеш... are written as one word. Буди пажљив / будите пажљиви is the ordinary imperative “be careful.”
Будите стрпљиви; лекар ће вас примити за неколико минута.
Please be patient; the doctor will see you in a few minutes. (formal/plural)
The будем Series Is Not the Current Copula
The forms будем, будеш, буде, будемо, будете, буду are stressed and non-clitic. They occur especially after да, in future-oriented conditions and time clauses, and as the auxiliary of Future II. They do not replace сам, си, је... in a statement about the present moment.
Важно је да будете овде петнаест минута раније.
It’s important that you be here fifteen minutes early. (formal/plural)
Ако сутра буде хладно, састанак ћемо одржати унутра.
If it is cold tomorrow, we’ll hold the meeting indoors.
Кад будем завршила извештај, послаћу ти прву верзију.
When I have finished the report, I’ll send you the first version. (female speaker)
In the last example будем + l-participle forms Future II. With a simple predicate, да будем мирна or ако буде слободан expresses a desired, possible, or future state. The detailed aspect-conditioned system is on Future II.
Бити as an Auxiliary
The short present forms build the perfect with an agreeing l-participle: радио сам, радила си, стигли су. Here сам/си/је... usually has no independent English translation; English may use have or a simple past.
Јутрос смо добили потврду и одмах смо резервисали карте.
This morning we received confirmation and immediately booked the tickets.
The conditional uses бих, би, би, бисмо, бисте, би, historically related to бити but functioning as a separate clitic paradigm in contemporary Serbian.
Радо бих вам помогао, али данас нисам слободан.
I’d gladly help you, but I’m not free today. (male speaker; polite)
Micro-dialogue
„Јеси ли била у новој библиотеци?“ — „Нисам, али ћу бити тамо сутра.“ — „Ако будеш имала времена, погледај и читаоницу на спрату.“
‘Have you been to the new library?’ — ‘No, but I’ll be there tomorrow.’ — ‘If you have time, take a look at the reading room upstairs too.’ (female addressee)
The dialogue contrasts a full question form, fused negative, Future I, and future-oriented будеш.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Choose a present series
Answer “Are you at home?” positively with an emphatic one-word answer, then make the full sentence negative. Use јесам in the answer and нисам in the sentence.
Task 2: Present or nonactual state?
Complete one sentence about a current location with сам/си/је..., then one condition beginning ако about tomorrow with будем/будеш/буде.... Explain why the two paradigms are not interchangeable.
Common Mistakes
❌ Ја бити спреман за разговор.
Incorrect — Serbian requires a finite present copula; the infinitive cannot replace am.
✅ Спреман сам за разговор после ручка.
I’m ready for the conversation after lunch. (male speaker)
❌ Не сам сигурна где је улаз.
Incorrect — the negative present of бити is the fused form нисам.
✅ Нисам сигурна где је главни улаз.
I’m not sure where the main entrance is. (female speaker)
❌ Данас будем у канцеларији до пет.
Incorrect for a current fact — use the ordinary clitic present, not the nonactual будем series.
✅ Данас сам у канцеларији до пет.
I’m at the office until five today.
❌ Јуче сам био уморна.
Incorrect — the l-participle must agree with a female speaker.
✅ Јуче сам била уморна после дугог пута.
Yesterday I was tired after the long journey. (female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Neutral present сам, си, је, смо, сте, су are second-position clitics.
- Full јесам... forms carry emphasis; negative нисам... forms are fused.
- The l-participle био/била/било/били... agrees with the subject.
- Future I is бићу...; the imperative is буди/будимо/будите.
- Будем... belongs to desired, possible, conditional, and future-oriented settings and builds Future II; it is not the ordinary present copula.
