B1 Path: Connected Independent Serbian

This page organizes existing lessons into a B1 route; it does not replace them. Begin after the A2 path, or when you can already maintain the seven-case system in familiar phrases, form the present and perfect, make ordinary future plans, and read both Cyrillic and Latin without transliterating every word.

B1 is where separate pieces must remain stable inside connected speech. Aspect chooses how an event is viewed, case follows both meaning and government, clitics occupy their prosodic position, and clauses show time and logical relations. Study these systems in a spiral: learn a contrast, use it in dialogue, meet it in reading, and retrieve it after a delay.

Keep rare allomorphs and low-frequency exceptions in a lookup notebook until the high-frequency patterns below survive connected production. Recognition can precede active mastery; an exception should not displace a missing aspectual contrast, governed phrase, or clitic pattern.

Entry diagnostic

Record a three-minute account of a missed appointment. Explain what usually happens, what happened that day, what someone told you, what you will do next time, and what would have happened under different circumstances. Then transcribe it in Cyrillic and convert one paragraph accurately into Latin.

Кад сам стигао на станицу, аутобус је већ отишао, па сам позвао колегиницу да јој објасним зашто касним.

When I reached the station, the bus had already left, so I called my colleague to explain why I was late.

Start the route if this meaning is clear even though aspect, clitics, or endings still need correction. Return to A2 repair work if you cannot keep participants and chronology identifiable.

Weeks 1–2: learn aspect through situations and pairs

Read the aspect overview, then contrast imperfective meaning with perfective meaning. Finish with the aspect decision guide. Do not memorize bare lists such as писати—написати. Store each verb with a scene, government, and a sentence that reveals the viewpoint.

Док сам писао извештај, три пута ме је звао клијент.

While I was writing the report, the client called me three times.

Написао сам извештај пре ручка и одмах га послао директорки.

I finished writing the report before lunch and sent it to the director immediately.

The first sentence opens the writing process as background; the second presents a completed result. The English simple past does not reliably choose Serbian aspect for you.

Checkpoint 1

For ten familiar pairs, tell a miniature story with an imperfective background and a perfective change. Two days later, retell five stories from pictures alone. Pass when your choice follows the intended viewpoint, not the English tense.

💡
Learn aspectual partners together, but do not assume they are perfect synonyms. A prefix may add a direction, quantity, beginning, or result as well as perfectivity.

Week 3: put clitics after the first prosodic unit

Study what clitics are, the second-position rule, and then cluster order. Work with whole openings rather than counting written words. Моја сестра can be one initial phrase, so the cluster follows it.

Моја сестра ми је јуче послала фотографије са путовања.

My sister sent me photos from her trip yesterday.

Кад су ми их показали, одмах сам препознао стару кућу.

When they showed them to me, I recognized the old house immediately.

Mark the conjunction or first phrase, then the cluster, then the remaining clause. Read each sentence aloud: the rule is prosodic, not merely typographic.

Script checkpoint

Copy one 120-word message in Cyrillic, then type the same text in Latin without automated transliteration. Audit љ/lj, њ/nj, џ/dž, ђ/đ, ћ/ć, ч/č, ж/ž, ш/š. Continue doing one dual-script transcription every week; the second script is not a post-B1 optional extra.

Week 4: connect clauses before making them dense

Use the subordinate-clause overview, da-clauses, and time and cause conjunctions. Build chains with кад, док, пошто, јер, иако, ако and да, but check tense, aspect, subject, and clitic placement inside every clause.

Иако је киша престала, сачекаћемо да се пут осуши пре него што кренемо.

Although the rain has stopped, we'll wait for the road to dry before setting off.

Рекла је да ће доћи чим заврши састанак.

She said that she would come as soon as she finished the meeting.

Serbian often keeps the time relation transparent without copying English tense backshift. Learn the clause as a meaningful dependency, not as a connector followed by an isolated verb form.

Week 5: use future II only where it belongs

Review future I, then study future II. Future II normally appears in dependent time and conditional clauses to locate a situation relative to a future main-clause event. With perfective verbs it often presents prior completion; with imperfective verbs it can describe an ongoing, repeated, or background condition. It is not a more formal replacement for future I in a main clause.

Кад будеш завршио пријаву, пошаљи ми потврду.

When you have finished the application, send me the confirmation.

Ако будем имала времена, свратићу после посла.

If I have time, I'll stop by after work.

Compare these with a plain present after кад/ако, which is also common when completion does not need special highlighting. Practice both in scheduling dialogues.

Week 6: build real and hypothetical conditionals

Study the conditional form before the conditional-sentence guide. Keep the special aorist-based forms бих, би, бисмо, бисте, би in natural second position.

Да сам раније видео поруку, дошао бих на време.

If I had seen the message earlier, I would have arrived on time.

Ако сутра буде лепо време, отићи ћемо до језера.

If the weather is nice tomorrow, we'll go to the lake.

The first is counterfactual; the second presents an open future condition. Do not choose the frame by translating English if alone.

Week 7: learn government as part of the predicate

Read verb government and prepositional verbs. Store помоћи некоме, чекати некога, разговарати с неким о нечему, and зависити од нечега as complete frames. Case tables cannot predict every lexical choice.

Разговарали смо с власницом о условима уговора.

We spoke with the owner about the terms of the contract.

Одговор зависи од тога колико људи потврди долазак.

The answer depends on how many people confirm that they are coming.

Make cards that prompt the predicate and meaning, not the name of a case. Produce a question, answer, and subordinate clause from each card.

Week 8: shape information and sustain dialogue

Study basic SVO and flexibility, then use the question–answer diagnostics in topic and focus as a bridge to B2. At B1, master the tendency for given material to precede new material and learn to identify the constituent that answers the current question. Leave marked fronting, particle scope, and detailed prosodic analysis for the B2 route. Serbian order is flexible because case marks roles, but alternatives are conditioned by context and prosody.

Марина је јуче послала уговор. — Не, уговор је послао Никола.

Marina sent the contract yesterday. — No, it was Nikola who sent the contract.

Read the annotated neighborly complaint, catching-up dialogue, and trip-planning dialogue. All three are B1 destinations. First listen or read for the communicative outcome; then mark aspect, governed phrases, clitics, clause boundaries, and focus. Reperform each scene with different details rather than memorizing it.

Spaced-review cycle

Use a four-touch cycle for every weekly block:

  1. same day: controlled contrasts;
  2. two days later: production from a situation or image;
  3. one week later: insertion into a dialogue;
  4. three weeks later: unscripted retelling and dual-script transcription.

If the delayed task fails, revisit the smallest dependency: aspectual pair, governed phrase, clitic host, or clause relation. Do not reread an entire case chart as a substitute.

Final B1 milestone

Hold an eight-minute conversation that includes a past problem, advice, a future arrangement, one open condition, and one counterfactual reflection. Then write 220–280 words about the same events in Cyrillic and a 100-word practical message in Latin. Pass when:

  • the timeline and participants remain clear across subordinate clauses;
  • aspect choices consistently match process, repetition, or bounded result;
  • clitics occupy natural second position and remain correctly ordered;
  • at least six learned predicates have their required cases or prepositions;
  • future II and conditional frames are meaningful rather than decorative;
  • neither script contains systematic conversion errors.

Common Mistakes

❌ Јуче сам писао извештај и послао сам га, па је готов.

Incorrect aspect for the intended completed first event: писао only presents the writing process.

✅ Јуче сам написао извештај и послао га, па је готов.

Yesterday I wrote the report and sent it, so it is finished.

❌ Моја ми сестра је послала поруку.

Incorrect split of the initial noun phrase and clitic cluster in the intended neutral reading.

✅ Моја сестра ми је послала поруку.

My sister sent me a message.

❌ Разговарали смо о власници за уговор.

Incorrect government copied from English prepositions.

✅ Разговарали смо с власницом о уговору.

We spoke with the owner about the contract.

❌ Будем послао пријаву сутра.

Incorrect independent use of future II as the main-clause future.

✅ Послаћу пријаву сутра, кад будем проверио све податке.

I'll send the application tomorrow, once I've checked all the information.

Key Takeaways

  • Spiral aspect, cases, clitics, clause linkage, script, and communicative work together.
  • Learn verbs as aspectual and government-bearing lexical units, not isolated translations.
  • Treat second position as a prosodic dependency and word order as information structure.
  • Use delayed production, dialogue, reading, and dual-script transcription to test real control.
  • Advance only when accuracy survives connected speech rather than a memorized paradigm.
