B2 Path: Nuance, Variation, and Formal Texts

This route coordinates existing B2 material; it is not a compressed substitute for the linked pages. It assumes completion of the B1 path, or comparable ability to narrate connected events, choose familiar aspectual partners, place clitic clusters, manage governed cases, and read both Serbian scripts.

At B2 the central task is interpretation under variation. You must recognize accentual contrasts without writing accent marks in ordinary text, interpret literary and regional past forms without overusing them, and choose among active, reflexive, and participial strategies for a real genre. Each two-week block ends in a product, then returns in delayed review.

Entry diagnostic: one event in three genres

Choose a recent public event. Give a two-minute spoken account to a friend, write a 180-word neutral news brief in Cyrillic, and draft a 120-word professional email in Latin requesting more information. Mark every place where you changed word order, tense, aspect, attribution, or address.

Према саопштењу организатора, отварање изложбе одложено је због техничких проблема.

According to the organizers' statement, the exhibition opening was postponed because of technical problems.

You are ready if the three versions differ appropriately even though advanced accent, passive, or regional analysis remains incomplete. Repair B1 first if clitic position, case government, or basic chronology repeatedly obscures the message.

Weeks 1–2: recognize pitch accent and length

Begin with the B2 four pitch accents. Use the C1 pages on post-accentual length and accent dictionaries selectively as reference tools: at this stage, learn what their marks encode and use them to check recordings, but postpone full paradigmatic analysis. The B2 goal is reliable recognition and informed checking, not spontaneous mastery of every accent or length pattern.

Ordinary Serbian spelling does not show pitch accent or vowel length. Specialist notation belongs in dictionaries and analysis. In your own messages, write ordinary forms such as град, жена, говорити without pedagogical marks.

Нисам рекао да је састанак отказан; рекао сам да је одложен.

I didn't say the meeting was canceled; I said it was postponed.

Поновите последњу реченицу мало спорије, молим вас.

Please repeat the last sentence a little more slowly.

Use recordings with transcripts. First identify the stressed syllable and phrase focus; only then consult a dictionary for lexical pitch and length. Shadowing trains the whole prosodic phrase, including unstressed clitics, more effectively than isolated tone labels.

Checkpoint 1

Transcribe sixty seconds of edited speech in normal orthography, mark stress separately on an analysis copy, and explain two focus shifts. Pass when your normal transcript remains unmarked and your analysis distinguishes lexical accent from sentence emphasis.

💡
Accent dictionaries describe a standard model; actual speakers vary by region, age, and style. Recognition should make listening more precise, not turn every difference into an error.

Week 3: expand the narrative tense inventory receptively

Study the aorist and pluperfect, while retaining the perfect as the unmarked spoken baseline. Aorist can foreground a bounded event in narrative and remains productive in some speech varieties; the pluperfect locates a past situation before another past reference point. Neither is simply a “more advanced” perfect.

Чим се врата отворише, публика уђе у салу.

As soon as the doors opened, the audience entered the hall. (literary or regionally available narrative aorist)

Када смо стигли, предавање је већ било почело.

When we arrived, the lecture had already begun.

For active production, retell both in the perfect before experimenting with aorist. Label literary, regional, and conversational evidence instead of assigning one register to every occurrence.

Reading checkpoint

Take a short news report and a public-domain narrative. Underline every past form, place events on a timeline, and state why the author used a bounded foreground form, background description, or earlier-past frame.

Weeks 4–5: move beyond one-to-one aspect pairs

Review lexical meaning, telicity, and aspect, then study narrative foregrounding and biaspectual verbs. Next revisit aspect with negation and aspect with modals. After the checkpoint, the C1 advanced-viewpoint synthesis can serve as an optional preview; its coercion and embedded-viewpoint edge cases are not part of the B2 advancement criterion.

At B2, ask three separate questions: what lexical event is named, what boundary or phase is profiled, and what the surrounding discourse needs. A prefix may create a new lexical result rather than a transparent perfective twin.

Цело јутро је прегледавала пријаве, али до подне није прегледала све.

She was reviewing applications all morning, but by noon she had not reviewed them all.

Морамо пажљиво прочитати уговор пре него што га потпишемо.

We must read the contract carefully before we sign it.

The first example contrasts secondary imperfective прегледавала, which opens a repeated/process view, with perfective прегледала under total quantity све. Context and object quantification interact with a real morphological contrast. With genuinely biaspectual verbs, context may select the reading without a form change, so confirm aspect in a reliable dictionary rather than assuming that every borrowed verb behaves alike. The second example places aspect inside modality and a purpose-driven sequence.

Checkpoint 2

Annotate a 250-word narrative for lexical verb, aspect, boundedness, repetition, and discourse role. Retell it with one viewpoint change and explain the resulting meaning difference. Reject a rewrite that merely swaps partners mechanically.

Week 6: choose a passive strategy, not “the passive”

Read passive strategies. Compare the passive participle with бити, the impersonal/reflexive се construction, and a natural active sentence with an omitted or generic agent. Serbian often prefers the latter two where English uses a passive.

Комисија ће објавити резултате у петак.

The committee will publish the results on Friday.

Резултати ће бити објављени у петак.

The results will be published on Friday. (formal, result-focused)

Пријаве се подносе електронским путем.

Applications are submitted electronically. (formal instruction)

Choose by discourse: Is the agent relevant? Is this a result, recurring procedure, instruction, or event report? Agreement in резултати ће бити објављени remains mandatory.

Week 7: recognize standards and regional voices responsibly

Begin with standard Serbian overview, then compare Ekavian and Ijekavian, the BCMS comparison, and Cyrillic–Latin use. The aim is receptive flexibility, not caricature or identity ranking.

Екавски: Следеће недеље представићемо нови извештај.

Ekavian: Next week we will present the new report.

Ијекавски: Сљедеће недјеље представићемо нови извјештај.

Ijekavian: Next week we will present the new report.

Keep reflexes consistent within a neutral example. Separate vocabulary, morphology, accent, script practice, and speaker identity; no single word establishes a person's nationality.

Script checkpoint

Read one Cyrillic and one Latin report each week. Produce a 150-word summary in the other script from meaning, not letter-by-letter copying. Then audit digraph capitalization and all Latin diacritics.

Weeks 8–9: news and professional writing

Read the annotated news report, formal email, and job advertisement. Support them with journalistic register and professional email.

News foregrounds source, time, consequence, and evidential distance. Professional email foregrounds purpose, actionable detail, polite address, and a clear closing. Do not transfer nominal density or agent suppression indiscriminately between them.

Како је саопштило министарство, рок је продужен до краја месеца.

According to the ministry's announcement, the deadline has been extended until the end of the month.

Поштована госпођо Јовановић, молим Вас да потврдите да ли је документација примљена.

Dear Ms Jovanović, please confirm whether the documentation has been received. (formal)

Follow the guide's conventions for Ви/Вас in respectful individual correspondence; institutional house style may differ. Attribute claims rather than presenting reported information as your own certainty.

Spaced-review cycle

Return to each block after two days, two weeks, and six weeks. Use a different genre each time: listening discrimination, oral retelling, editorial annotation, then independent production. Maintain a recurring error log with four columns: form, intended meaning, corrected sentence, and retrieval date.

Final B2 milestone

Build a three-part portfolio around one public topic:

  1. a four-minute oral summary of two sources, with one source in each script;
  2. a 350–450-word news-style account in Cyrillic with explicit attribution;
  3. a 180-word professional email in Latin requesting action or clarification.

Add a commentary explaining five aspect choices, two passive/active decisions, one past-tense interpretation, one regional feature, and one prosodic observation. Pass when the texts are coherent, idiomatic for their genres, orthographically exact, and free of recurring B1 errors. Accent marks must appear only in your analytical notes, not the ordinary Serbian products.

Common Mistakes

❌ Састанак је одложе̏н до петка.

Incorrect ordinary spelling: specialist pitch marks do not belong in a normal email or report.

✅ Састанак је одложен до петка.

The meeting has been postponed until Friday.

❌ Резултати ће бити објављено сутра.

Incorrect passive agreement: the participle must agree with masculine plural резултати.

✅ Резултати ће бити објављени сутра.

The results will be published tomorrow.

❌ Сљедеће недеље објављујемо извјештај.

Inconsistent neutral variety: Ijekavian сљедеће/извјештај is mixed with Ekavian недеље.

✅ Сљедеће недјеље објављујемо извјештај.

Next week we are publishing the report. (Ijekavian Serbian)

❌ Према новинама, нова мера ће сигурно решити проблем.

Unjustified certainty: citing a source does not warrant the speaker's absolute conclusion.

✅ Према новинама, очекује се да ће нова мера ублажити проблем.

According to the newspaper, the new measure is expected to alleviate the problem.
