Annotated Job Advertisement

A Serbian job advertisement compresses many clauses into headings and bullets. Requirements often appear as noun phrases, duties as action-noun phrases, and application instructions as се-passives or modal constructions. The grammar must still make clear what is required, what is merely desirable, who may apply, and what documents must be submitted.

Text status: The employer, address, vacancy, and deadline below are fictional and exist only for instruction. The advert is not an active employment offer and does not state legal requirements for any real jurisdiction.

Candidates who are shortlisted will be invited to an interview.

The email address remains in Latin characters because email infrastructure uses them as an address string; it is not a romanization of Serbian. The paired title координатор/координаторка and later кандидати и кандидаткиње explicitly include masculine and feminine forms, while заинтересоване особе offers an agreeing feminine-plural phrase because особа is grammatically feminine regardless of a person's gender.

Section-by-section annotation

Desirable	Impersonal пожељно је presents a preference. Neuter pronoun оно resumes neuter искуство; predicate обавезан agrees with masculine услов.	The explicit contrast prevents “desirable” from being misread as compulsory.
Offer	Нуди се is a се-passive focused on the contract. Од дванаест месеци specifies duration; уз + accusative adds a condition/possibility.	The offered arrangement is stated without inventing a personal recruiter as subject.
Application	Modal треба да пошаљу has plural subject заинтересоване особе. Direct objects are accusative радну биографију and кратко мотивационо писмо.	Required documents and deadline appear in one actionable sentence.
Delivery	Пријаве се шаљу is a plural се-passive. На адресу uses accusative destination; са назнаком uses instrumental accompaniment/specification.	The channel and exact subject-line label are both supplied.
Selection	Relative који is nominative plural subject of уђу. With the coordinated masculine-and-feminine human subject кандидати и кандидаткиње, both the relative and future passive use standard masculine-plural resolution: који ... биће позвани.	The advert states who will receive follow-up without promising a response to everyone.

Requirements and preferences must not blur

Услови conventionally means requirements. Пожељно је signals an advantage rather than an absolute condition. If every “desirable” item is in fact used to exclude applicants, the wording is misleading even when grammatically correct.

Обавезно је активно знање српског језика; познавање још једног језика сматра се предношћу.

Active command of Serbian is required; knowledge of another language is considered an advantage.

The impersonal passive сматра се предношћу takes instrumental предношћу as the assigned category. Compare a direct requirement:

Од кандидата и кандидаткиња очекује се да самостално планирају недељне задатке.

Candidates are expected to plan weekly tasks independently.

Од + genitive identifies the people from whom the behavior is expected. The embedded verb is plural планирају.

Give every item one status: required, desirable, or offered. Grammar such as обавезно је, пожељно је, нуди се should make that status recoverable without guesswork.

Impersonal and се-passive constructions

Adverts commonly foreground roles and procedures:

нуди се уговор — a contract is offered;
пријаве се шаљу — applications are sent;
очекује се да... — it is expected that...;
биће позвани — they will be invited.

Рад се обавља у просторијама Центра, а повремени рад од куће договара се са руководиоцем тима.

Work is performed on the Center's premises, while occasional remote work is arranged with the team manager.

These forms omit the actor because the procedure is central. They should not conceal who makes a decision when accountability matters; then write комисија бира, руководилац одобрава, or another explicit subject.

Gendered titles and inclusive reference

Serbian role nouns often have masculine and feminine forms: координатор/координаторка, сарадник/сарадница, кандидат/кандидаткиња. Paired forms are one contemporary inclusive strategy. Особа is also useful, but its grammatical gender is always feminine:

Изабрана особа биће задужена за координацију малог тима.

The selected person will be responsible for coordinating a small team.

Feminine изабрана agrees with the noun особа, not with the real-world gender of the eventual hire. Avoid mixing agreement according to an imagined applicant.

Изабрани координатор или изабрана координаторка учествоваће у изради годишњег плана.

The selected coordinator will take part in preparing the annual plan.

The paired subject can be cumbersome if repeated in every bullet. Establish inclusion clearly, then use syntactic strategies—plural, особа, or impersonal phrasing—without erasing meaning. For a fuller discussion, see gender-inclusive language.

Parallel bullet syntax

The model duties all name activities with nouns. An equally valid advert could use present-tense verbs, but the list should not jump randomly between fragments, commands, and full clauses.

• води евиденцију пројекта; • припрема извештаје; • сарађује са спољним установама.

• keeps project records; • prepares reports; • collaborates with external institutions.

Here the understood subject is the jobholder, and all verbs are third-person singular present. The noun-phrase version sounds more administrative; the verb version is often easier to read.

Application instructions and cases

Послати нешто на адресу combines accusative documents with accusative destination. Пријавити се на конкурс uses на + accusative, while конкурисати за радно место uses за + accusative.

На конкурс се можете пријавити тако што ћете послати биографију и портфолио.

You can apply to the competition by sending a résumé and portfolio.

Конкуришем за радно место у тиму за дигитализацију.

I am applying for a position on the digitization team.

Do not infer that конкурисати на and пријавити се за freely replace these established frames in every context; learn the whole collocation.

Register and editorial responsibility

The advert is administrative/professional, but it uses contemporary plain syntax. Verbal nouns make headings compact; prose sentences clarify distinctions and actions. No archaic formula makes a vacancy more official.

The email address is a fictional .example address. In a real advert, verify the deadline, contact route, employment terms, accessibility of the selection process, and any legal wording before publication.

Reuse the advertisement

Task 1: Make the bullets parallel

Write three duties first as verbal-noun phrases, then rewrite the same duties as third-person present verbs. Do not mix the two structures within either list.

Task 2: Separate status

Create two mandatory requirements, one desirable qualification, and two offered benefits. Mark each explicitly with обавезно, пожељно, or нуди се.

Task 3: Change the role title

Replace the coordinator role with сарадник/сарадница за комуникације. Update later paired references, but use изабрана особа once and keep its grammatical agreement feminine.

Common Mistakes

Mixing the title and agreement

❌ Изабрана особа биће задужен за архиву.

Incorrect—задужен must agree with feminine noun особа, regardless of the person's gender.

✅ Изабрана особа биће задужена за вођење дигиталне архиве.

The selected person will be responsible for managing the digital archive.

Using the wrong form after две

❌ Потребно је најмање две година искуства.

Incorrect—after две use године; искуства remains genitive.

✅ Потребне су најмање две године релевантног искуства.

At least two years of relevant experience are required.

Mixing bullet structures

❌ • припрема извештаја; • сарађујете са установама; • да води евиденцију.

Poorly parallel—noun phrase, second-person verb, and да-clause are mixed without reason.
