Gender, Titles, and Inclusive Reference

Inclusive reference in Serbian has to work through a language in which nouns, adjectives, participles, and many past-tense forms mark grammatical gender. There is no single mechanical replacement for English singular they. Good practice therefore combines three skills: use the form a person uses for themself, maintain grammatical agreement, and choose a collective or restructuring strategy when an individual gender need not be specified.

Usage is changing, and preferences genuinely compete. A form can be morphologically regular yet unfamiliar in one profession, while another feminine title is completely ordinary. Respectful Serbian does not require pretending that all speakers or institutions make the same choice.

Review grammatical gender for the noun system and coordination agreement for the full resolution patterns; this page asks how writers use those grammatical resources when referring to people.

Feminine Professional Nouns

Many feminine professional and role nouns are established in contemporary standard use: директорка, уредница, професорка, лекарка, инжењерка, адвокатица, ауторка, новинарка, научница. Other formations, including психолошкиња and архитекткиња, are attested in public and institutional use but do not have uniform acceptance across speakers, dictionaries, or house styles. Their suffixes are lexical; learners cannot safely attach one universal ending or treat every disputed choice as settled.

MasculineCommon or attested title choiceExample of agreement
директордиректоркадиректорка је одобрила
уредникуредницаглавна уредница
психологпсихолошкиња / психологпсихолошкиња је говорила / психолог Ана Илић је говорила
судијасудијасудија је одлучила
архитектаархитекткиња / архитектаform and agreement follow the person's or institution's usage

Главна уредница је представила нови број часописа.

The editor-in-chief presented the new issue of the journal. (neutral contemporary usage)

Судија је образложила одлуку на крају рочишта.

The judge explained the decision at the end of the hearing. (a woman; common-gender title with feminine agreement)

With common-gender nouns such as судија, the noun form alone does not identify sex or gender; agreement can. With professionally established alternatives, follow the individual's stated title and the relevant institutional style. Do not “correct” ауторка to masculine аутор merely because an older document used masculine titles generically.

💡
Derivational predictability is not social uniformity. Check a reliable dictionary for the form, then check the person's own biography, signature, or institutional page for the preferred title.

Titles, Surnames, and Agreement

Serbian surnames in -ић normally remain unchanged for women. The surrounding title and agreement carry gender where relevant.

Професорка Јелена Николић одржала је уводно предавање.

Professor Jelena Nikolić gave the opening lecture.

Поштована госпођо Николић, хвала Вам на достављеном извештају.

Dear Ms. Nikolić, thank you for the submitted report. (formal direct address)

The surname stays Николић, not Николићева, unless -ева/-ова is part of a particular historical, stylistic, or naming practice. Such derived surname forms are not the neutral default for identifying a contemporary woman.

If a woman chooses a masculine professional title, the agreement pattern can vary with syntax, convention, and personal preference. A sentence with an explicit personal name often makes natural semantic agreement available: Архитекта Маја Ристић представила је пројекат. In highly edited writing, avoid forcing an uncertain pattern; use the form found in the person's own professional presentation or recast with the name as the agreement controller.

Архитекта Маја Ристић представила је решење које је њен тим припремио.

Architect Maja Ristić presented the solution her team had prepared. (title choice retained; feminine agreement with the named person)

Respectful singular Ви is a different issue from lexical gender. Standard polite address conventionally uses masculine-plural predicate agreement even to one woman: Госпођо, Ви сте били у праву. A true group of women takes feminine plural: Колегинице, ви сте биле у праву.

Referring to Groups

Traditional generic masculine plural is widespread and grammatically standard: студенти can refer to students as a class, and masculine plural resolves a mixed-gender coordination. That grammatical fact does not prevent a writer from making a group more visible or avoiding unnecessary gender marking.

Сви пријављени кандидати добиће обавештење до петка.

All registered candidates will receive a notification by Friday. (traditional generic masculine plural)

Све пријављене особе добиће обавештење до петка.

Everyone who applied will receive a notification by Friday. (gender-neutral collective wording)

Студенткиње и студенти бирају по два представника сваке године.

Female and male students elect two representatives each year. (paired forms for explicit visibility)

Paired forms are useful when representation is itself relevant. Repeating them in every clause can make dense prose difficult to read. Collective nouns and relative clauses often solve that problem: особе које су се пријавиле, наставно особље, истраживачки тим, чланство удружења. These are not interchangeable synonyms; choose one whose meaning actually matches the group.

Mixed-gender coordination normally takes masculine plural agreement:

Ана и Милош су изабрани за представнике одељења.

Ana and Miloš were elected as class representatives. (standard mixed-gender plural resolution)

That agreement is a grammatical resolution rule, not a statement that the man is socially more important. When the participle itself is distracting or the membership is unknown, a present-tense or impersonal recast can remove it: Ана и Милош представљају одељење; Комисија бира две особе.

When Gender Is Unknown or Not Relevant

Serbian does not have a universally accepted standard singular pronoun that maps directly onto English singular they. Mechanically substituting plural они for one unspecified person disrupts number agreement. Slash-heavy forms such as кандидат/киња are found in forms and activist or administrative writing, but they are not effortless spoken Serbian and may reduce accessibility.

Use one of these strategies according to context:

  1. a genuinely collective noun: особље, публика, руководство;
  2. особа plus feminine grammatical agreement, regardless of the person's identity;
  3. a relative construction: ко се пријави, они који се пријаве;
  4. a repeated role noun when clarity matters;
  5. the individual's requested pronouns or wording when referring to a known person.

Особа која подноси захтев мора да приложи копију документа.

The person submitting the request must attach a copy of the document. (gender-unspecified administrative wording)

Ко жели да учествује, нека попуни образац до понедељка.

Anyone who wants to participate should complete the form by Monday. (inclusive relative construction)

The noun особа is grammatically feminine, so adjectives and participles agree in the feminine even when the referent's gender is unknown: одговорна особа је обавештена. Grammatical gender is not a claim about the person's identity.

Some individuals and communities use innovative forms or individualized pronoun strategies. These must be presented as community-specific or emerging, not as a settled universal standard. In direct interaction, respectful self-identification takes priority over a writer's preferred general policy.

💡
Inclusive wording must remain semantically honest. Особље means staff, not every visitor; чланство denotes membership as a body, not necessarily each member in a sentence requiring individual count.

Editing One Notice in Three Ways

Traditional generic wording:

Кандидати су дужни да потпишу изјаву пре разговора.

Candidates are required to sign the declaration before the interview. (formal, traditional generic masculine)

Paired visibility:

Кандидаткиње и кандидати потписују изјаву пре разговора.

Female and male candidates sign the declaration before the interview. (formal, explicitly paired)

Collective restructuring:

Све особе позване на разговор потписују изјаву пре почетка.

Everyone invited to the interview signs the declaration before it begins. (formal, gender-unspecified)

The third version is inclusive and readable, but it slightly changes the information structure: the defining property is being invited, not holding candidate status. A good editor notices such shifts instead of treating inclusive revision as search-and-replace.

Standards, Regions, and Identity

Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, and Serbian share much morphology and vocabulary, but their normative recommendations and institutional habits are not identical. A feminine title preferred in one standard or institution is not therefore “informal Serbian,” and an Ijekavian Serbian form is not less correct than its Ekavian counterpart. Label the standard, region, or community when that distinction is relevant.

Common Mistakes

❌ Професорка Јована Петровићева је објавила резултате.

Incorrect as a neutral modern naming default—the woman's surname Петровић normally remains unchanged; Петровићева would require a specific historical or stylistic naming practice.

✅ Професорка Јована Петровић је објавила резултате.

Professor Jovana Petrović published the results.

❌ Главна уредница је представио нову рубрику.

Incorrect agreement—the feminine noun уредница requires feminine singular представила.

✅ Главна уредница је представила нову рубрику.

The editor-in-chief introduced the new section.

❌ Ако неко касни, они треба да јаве секретаријату.

Incorrect mechanical calque of English singular they—the singular antecedent and plural pronoun do not form a neutral standard pattern here.

✅ Ко касни, треба да обавести секретаријат.

Anyone who is late should notify the office.

❌ Ана и Иван су изабране за делегате.

Incorrect standard resolution—a mixed-gender coordinated subject takes masculine plural изабрани.

✅ Ана и Иван су изабрани за делегате.

Ana and Ivan were elected as delegates.

Practice

Task 1: choose a strategy

Rewrite Сваки кандидат треба да приложи своју биографију in two ways: once with paired role nouns and once with свака особа која.... Preserve the requirement and check every agreement form.

Task 2: edit a biography respectfully

A professional signs her biography архитекта Маја Ристић. Write one third-person sentence about a project she presented. Keep her chosen title and make the past-tense agreement unambiguous by including her name.

Key Takeaways

  • Use established feminine professional nouns naturally, but respect an individual's own title.
  • Surnames in -ић normally remain unchanged for women.
  • Mixed-group masculine plural is standard grammatical resolution; paired forms and collective restructuring serve different discourse goals.
  • Serbian has no universal standard equivalent of English singular they; restructure rather than copying English number agreement.
  • Inclusive editing must preserve meaning, readability, and the person's self-identification.
