Formal and Informal Serbian

Formal and informal Serbian are not two separate grammars. They are coordinated choices about address, titles, greetings, wording, directness, and how much context is stated explicitly. Changing only ти to Ви while leaving slang, an abrupt command, or a nickname unchanged produces a mixed signal.

This page builds complete register profiles. For the finer social choices behind respectful address, see ти versus Ви.

The Core Contrast: Relationship, Not Rank Alone

Use ти (informal) with children, relatives, friends, and people with whom reciprocal informal address has been established. Use Ви/ви (formal or respectfully neutral) with an unfamiliar adult, a client, a patient, an official, or anyone with whom greater distance is appropriate. Age and hierarchy matter, but so do setting, institutional culture, and the relationship itself.

Ћао, Милице, имаш ли минут да погледаш ово?

Hi, Milica, do you have a minute to look at this? (informal)

Добар дан, госпођо Јовановић. Имате ли тренутак да погледате овај документ?

Good afternoon, Ms. Jovanović. Do you have a moment to look at this document? (formal)

The second version changes four things together: greeting, title plus vocative, Ви agreement, and a more neutral noun документ instead of the context-dependent ово. Formal Serbian often makes the request easier to process; it need not be longer for its own sake.

💡
Do not infer that everyone older than you must always receive Ви, or that colleagues must immediately use ти. Follow the form the other person uses and the convention of the setting; when necessary, ask Можемо ли да пређемо на ти? “Can we switch to informal address?”

One Respectful Person Versus a Real Group

Serbian uses plural verbal and adjectival forms with respectful singular Ви. In the standard polite pattern, past-tense and predicate agreement is conventionally masculine plural regardless of the addressee's gender. A real group follows ordinary plural gender resolution.

ReferenceStandard patternMeaning
one respected womanВи сте рекли да сте слободни.You said you were available.
one respected manВи сте рекли да сте слободни.You said you were available.
group of womenВи сте рекле да сте слободне.You all said you were available.
mixed group / group of menВи сте рекли да сте слободни.You all said you were available.

Професорко Петровић, да ли сте већ видели исправљену верзију рада?

Professor Petrović, have you already seen the corrected version of the paper? (formal address to one woman)

Capital Ви, Вас, Вам, Ваш is an optional sign of respect when writing directly to one person. Lowercase is also common in professional correspondence and is required for an ordinary plural. Choose a house style and keep it consistent.

Requests: Soften the Action, Not the Meaning

An imperative can be warm and natural between friends. In a first professional contact, a question, молим Вас/вас да, or a conditional normally gives the recipient more room to respond.

Пошаљи ми адресу чим стигнеш.

Send me the address as soon as you arrive. (informal)

Молим Вас да ми пошаљете тачну адресу када будете у прилици.

Please send me the exact address when you have an opportunity. (formal)

Да ли бисте могли да потврдите термин до сутра у подне?

Could you confirm the appointment by noon tomorrow? (formal, politely explicit)

The conditional бисте могли is softer than a bare imperative, but piling up deference can become bureaucratic. Били бисмо Вам изузетно захвални уколико бисте били у могућности да... is possible in very formal institutional prose, yet it is heavy for an ordinary work message. Clear modern professional Serbian often prefers one polite frame and one precise action.

Vocabulary and Discourse Density

Informal speech tolerates shared-context words, contractions in delivery, discourse particles, and colloquial vocabulary. Formal prose names the document, date, or responsibility more explicitly. That is a difference in information management, not permission to replace every everyday word with an abstract noun.

Еј, важи, чујемо се кад завршим с послом.

Hey, okay, we'll talk when I finish work. (informal)

Договорено. Обавестићу Вас чим поступак буде завршен.

Agreed. I will notify you as soon as the procedure is complete. (formal/administrative)

The passive in the second sentence is motivated because the completion of the procedure matters more than the person completing it. Formality does not generally require a passive. If the actor matters, active Serbian is clearer: Комисија ће објавити резултате у петак.

Titles, Names, and Greetings

Titles used in direct address take the vocative: господине Марковићу, госпођо Илић, професорко Николић. In colloquial school speech, nominative-shaped професорка is also widespread as address, but the regular standard vocative професорко is the appropriate model for a formal paradigm. A woman's surname in -ић does not acquire a special feminine ending. In a continuing workplace relationship, Добар дан, Ана may be professionally neutral without being intimate; Поштована госпођо Савић is more ceremonious.

Поштовани господине Костићу, хвала Вам на брзом одговору.

Dear Mr. Kostić, thank you for your prompt reply. (formal correspondence)

Здраво, Бојане, хвала ти што си се тако брзо јавио.

Hi, Bojan, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. (informal)

Forms must match throughout. Starting with Поштовани and then switching to ти is appropriate only if the participants explicitly change footing; accidental mixing sounds careless.

Script Does Not Encode Formality

Cyrillic and Latin are both standard Serbian scripts. Cyrillic is favored in official state use, while either script may be chosen in business, publishing, or personal communication. Latin does not make a message informal, and Cyrillic does not automatically make slang formal.

Поштована госпођо Радовић, у прилогу Вам шаљем потписан уговор.

Dear Ms. Radović, I am sending you the signed contract as an attachment. (formal Cyrillic message)

A Latin version could be equally formal if written consistently: Poštovana gospođo Radović, u prilogu Vam šaljem potpisan ugovor. Switching repeatedly between scripts inside Serbian running text is normally poor editing, not a register strategy. Preserve original spellings in URLs, email addresses, brands, and exact quotations.

💡
A neighboring Bosnian, Croatian, or Montenegrin standard is not an “informal version” of Serbian. Shared forms, different standard preferences, and regional speech must be described as such—not ranked as levels of polish.

Two Complete Rewrites

Informal plan between friends

Ћао, Марко! Хоћеш да се нађемо код биоскопа око осам? Јави ако касниш.

Hi, Marko! Want to meet by the cinema around eight? Let me know if you're running late. (informal)

Formal scheduling message

Добар дан, господине Марковићу. Да ли би Вам одговарало да се састанемо у холу биоскопа у 20 часова? Молим Вас да ме обавестите уколико се план промени.

Good afternoon, Mr. Marković. Would it suit you to meet in the cinema lobby at 8 p.m.? Please let me know if the plan changes. (formal)

The formal version adds a title, exact place and time, a conditional question, and an explicit contingency. The informal version relies on shared context and direct coordination. Neither is inherently kinder; each fits a different relationship.

Common Mistakes

❌ Госпођо Јовановић, Ви јеси примила мој захтев?

Incorrect—respectful subject Ви cannot combine with singular auxiliary јеси and feminine-singular participle примила.

✅ Госпођо Јовановић, да ли сте примили мој захтев?

Ms. Jovanović, have you received my request? (formal address to one woman)

❌ Професорко, Ви сте рекла да је рок у понедељак.

Incorrect agreement—respectful singular Ви takes conventional plural predicate agreement, not feminine singular рекла.

✅ Професорко, Ви сте рекли да је рок у понедељак.

Professor, you said the deadline was Monday. (formal address to one woman)

❌ Поштовани господине, пошаљи ми уговор данас.

Incorrect register mixture—пошаљи and ми address the recipient informally after a formal salutation.

✅ Поштовани господине, молим Вас да ми данас пошаљете уговор.

Dear Sir, please send me the contract today. (formal)

❌ Ћирилица је формална, а латиница је само разговорна.

Incorrect claim—both scripts are standard Serbian; script choice depends on institution, medium, audience, and house style.

✅ Овај допис је доследно написан српском латиницом.

This letter is written consistently in Serbian Latin script. (neutral statement about script)

Practice

Task 1: rebuild the whole register

Rewrite Еј, докторе, дај ми резултате кад стигнеш for a patient's first written contact with a specialist. Change the greeting, address agreement, request form, and time wording—not just one pronoun.

Task 2: identify the addressee

Explain the agreement in Госпођо, Ви сте били веома љубазни and Даме, ви сте биле веома љубазне. The first addresses one woman respectfully with conventional masculine-plural agreement; the second addresses a real all-female group with feminine-plural agreement.

Key Takeaways

  • Formality is a coordinated profile of address, greeting, vocabulary, syntax, and explicitness.
  • Respectful singular Ви takes plural verb forms and conventional masculine-plural predicate agreement.
  • One polite request frame is usually clearer than layers of bureaucratic wording.
  • Cyrillic and Latin are standard scripts, not formal and informal codes.
  • Label slang, regional usage, and marked forms; do not treat neighboring standards as registers of Serbian.
