The traditional description of standard Serbian distinguishes four lexical accents: short falling, long falling, short rising, and long rising. The system combines two dimensions—vowel quantity and tonal behavior—and can distinguish words that ordinary spelling writes identically. For a learner, the sensible first goal is recognition: hear the prominent syllable, then length, then the relation between falling and rising patterns. Native-like production can develop later.
The Specialist Notation
Ordinary Serbian writing does not mark these accents. Dictionaries, linguistic works, and teaching materials may add one of four signs directly over the accented vowel. This page uses them only to teach prosody.
| Accent | Latin notation | Cyrillic notation | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| short falling | kȕća | ку̏ћа | house |
| long falling | mȏre | мо̑ре | sea |
| short rising | žèna | жѐна | woman |
| long rising | rúka | ру́ка | hand; arm |
The signs are conventional: double grave ȁ marks short falling, inverted breve ȃ marks long falling, grave à marks short rising, and acute á marks long rising. They do not function like the accent marks of Spanish, and an acute sign does not simply mean “put stress here.” Each sign encodes both quantity and accent type.
First Dimension: Short Versus Long
The most accessible distinction for many English speakers is duration. A long accented vowel is normally held longer than a short accented vowel, but length is contrastive rather than emotional emphasis. Do not exaggerate it into two separately articulated vowels.
The minimal pairs гра̏д–гра̑д and лу̏к–лу̑к hold the consonants constant and change only the accented vowel’s quantity. Both members have a falling accent because a one-syllable word cannot carry a rising accent in the traditional standard system.
Гра̏д је уништио виноград за десет минута.
Hail destroyed the vineyard in ten minutes. (Short falling on гра̏д; specialist notation)
Стари гра̑д се види са друге стране реке.
The old city can be seen from the other side of the river. (Long falling on гра̑д; specialist notation)
Лу̏к је већ исецкан, додај само парадајз.
The onion is already chopped; just add the tomato. (Short falling on лу̏к)
Камени лу̑к изнад капије је напукао.
The stone arch above the gate has cracked. (Long falling on лу̑к)
In ordinary print, both pairs appear as град and лук. Context normally resolves the meaning. A learner therefore needs an audio source or an accent-marked dictionary to know the lexical quantity; the unmarked letters alone cannot supply it.
Second Dimension: Falling Versus Rising
The labels “falling” and “rising” are useful, but they can mislead if you listen only inside the accented vowel. In contemporary phonetic descriptions, the pitch relation to the following syllable is a major cue. After a falling accent, the next syllable is substantially lower. With a rising accent, the next syllable tends to stay high or may be higher. This makes a rising accent partly a two-syllable event.
Жѐна ме чека испред зграде.
The woman is waiting for me in front of the building. (Short rising on жѐна)
Ру́ка ме још боли кад подигнем торбу.
My arm still hurts when I lift the bag. (Long rising on ру́ка)
With жѐна, do not force a dramatic rise and then reduce the final а. Keep the second syllable clear and listen to its pitch relative to the first. With ру́ка, combine longer duration on у with the high continuation into ка.
Falling and rising can themselves distinguish words. The pair па̏ра–па̀ра differs in accent type rather than segmental spelling:
Па̏ра ми је замаглила наочаре.
The steam fogged up my glasses. (Short falling on па̏ра)
Свака па̀ра нам је важна овог месеца.
Every penny matters to us this month. (Short rising on па̀ра)
Another useful dictionary pair is ку̏пити “gather, collect” versus ку́пити “buy.” In normal writing both are купити, and syntax and context usually make the intended verb obvious.
Треба ку̏пити суво лишће пре кише.
We need to gather the dry leaves before the rain. (Short falling on ку̏пити)
Треба ку́пити хлеб пре него што се продавница затвори.
We need to buy bread before the shop closes. (Long rising on ку́пити)
Where the Four Types Can Occur
In the traditional standard distribution, falling accents occur on the first syllable of a word, while rising accents may occur on any syllable except the last. A one-syllable word can therefore have only a falling accent. In a word of two or more syllables, the final syllable is not lexically accented under this norm.
| Position | Falling | Rising |
|---|---|---|
| only syllable | yes | no |
| first syllable | yes | yes |
| internal syllable | no in the traditional norm | yes |
| final syllable | no in a polysyllabic native word | no |
This is a descriptive norm, not a claim that every Serbian speaker realizes all four categories identically. (regional) Accent systems differ across the Serbian-speaking area. (informal) Many urban speakers reduce length contrasts, weaken postaccentual lengths, or use falling accents in newer loans and names outside the traditional distribution. (formal) Careful broadcasting and trained stage speech often preserve the codified contrasts more consistently. Learn to recognize variation without treating a regional or urban speaker as careless.
Pitch Accent Is Not English Word Stress
English speakers often equate prominence with loudness and then weaken all surrounding vowels. Serbian prominence also involves duration and pitch, and its unstressed vowels generally remain full. A louder first syllable is not an adequate substitute for the correct lexical accent.
Likewise, do not read an isolated word from spelling and invent a melody. Ordinary град, пара, and купити conceal the relevant distinctions. A good dictionary entry may also mark a macron for an unaccented long vowel, for example a postaccentual length. That macron is a separate sign, not a fifth accent. See the dedicated postaccentual length page for that layer.
Девојка полако затвара прозор.
The girl is slowly closing the window.
This ordinary sentence is correctly unmarked. Its spelling does not reveal all lexical pitch accents or postaccentual lengths. When shadowing a recording, preserve the clear vowels in девојка, полако, and затвара instead of reducing the less prominent syllables as in English.
A Listening-First Recognition Task
Use recordings from one speaker at first; switching regions too soon makes the categories harder to hear. Work with complete phrases rather than isolated dictionary forms.
- Find the accented syllable. Tap once at the point of greatest lexical prominence. Ignore the four-way label on the first pass.
- Judge quantity. Compare гра̏д “hail” with гра̑д “city,” then лу̏к “onion” with лу̑к “arch.” Mark only S or L.
- Judge the next syllable. In two-syllable items, decide whether the following syllable drops clearly or stays high. Mark F or R.
- Check the dictionary notation. Combine the two judgments as SF, LF, SR, or LR.
- Repeat the whole phrase. Copy timing first. Do not perform an exaggerated musical swoop on a single vowel.
For a four-item test, randomize the phrases containing ку̏ћа, мо̑ре, жѐна, and ру́ка. Then repeat with the meaning-changing pairs above. A correct lexical choice matters more initially than a perfect imitation of a trained announcer.
Ку̏ћа је празна, али су врата откључана.
The house is empty, but the door is unlocked. (Short falling on ку̏ћа)
Мо̑ре је јутрос необично мирно.
The sea is unusually calm this morning. (Long falling on мо̑ре)
Common Mistakes
Treating the acute sign as “ordinary stress”
❌ Ру́ка значи само да слог треба изговорити гласније.
Incorrect — the acute sign marks a long rising accent, not loudness alone.
✅ У речи ру́ка слушам дужину самогласника у и висину следећег слога.
In ру́ка, I listen for the length of u and the pitch of the following syllable.
Listening only inside the accented syllable
❌ Код жѐна занемарујем други слог.
Incorrect — the following syllable is an important cue to a rising accent.
✅ Код жѐна поредим висину слогова же и на.
With жѐна, I compare the pitch of the syllables že and na.
Writing specialist marks in ordinary prose
❌ Жѐна ме чека испред ку̏ће.
Incorrect for ordinary orthography — the accent marks are normally omitted outside specialist or teaching contexts.
✅ Жена ме чека испред куће.
The woman is waiting for me in front of the house. (Normal spelling)
Guessing length from the number of letters
❌ Град има четири слова, па увек има исти изговор.
Incorrect — ordinary град can represent гра̏д ‘hail’ or гра̑д ‘city.’
✅ У речнику проверавам да ли је гра̏д или гра̑д.
I check in the dictionary whether it is ‘hail’ or ‘city.’
Adding an English-style schwa after prominence
❌ После наглашеног слога претварам а у речи жена у нејасно ‘ух’.
Incorrect — the final a remains a clear Serbian vowel.
✅ У речи жена оба самогласника остају јасна.
In жена, both vowels remain clear.
Key Takeaways
- The four descriptive categories combine short/long with falling/rising.
- Falling versus rising is heard partly through the pitch of the following syllable.
- One-syllable words have falling accents in the traditional standard system; rising accents need a following syllable.
- Normal Serbian spelling omits accent and length marks. The signs on this page are specialist notation.
- Learn through recorded phrases and accent dictionaries, while accepting documented regional and urban variation.
